This is being produced as a comedy.

    This should be interesting.
She-Hulk will be a half-hour comedy set in the legal world starring Orphan Black lead Tatiana Maslany. As such, it will follow a number of comic book story arcs featuring Jennifer Walters continuing her work as a lawyer while spending all of her time in Hulk mode. Now, the head of Marvel Studios has gone into more detail on the length of the first—and potentially only—season of the show......

Given how of the MCU already has been heavily comedic - in particular, Guardians and Thor: Ragnarok being the standout examples - I'm curious how a Marvel TV series goes "Full comedy"

Kind of a 80s law/business TV show feel to that last scene.. like maybe a tv ad being made in the 80s?

Yeah looks that way especially showing Bruce in his Professor Hulk form.

I'm not saying she has to be muscly but She-Hulk's legs look pretty skinny.

When I first saw the still of her in that room and Hulk, I thought it was a kid at first.

Orphan Black crossover where she Hulk is simply a clone that went wrong? 😁

Wondered aloud in another thread if the Hulk will be CGI like her male counterpart, or just Maslany with some digital accentuation / colouring?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,411 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Well She Hulk is supposed to be 8ft tall so there's going to have to be some CGI trickery there. Either that or employ some Lord of the Rings forced perspective (Small = far away)

    This too shall pass.

Presumably the CGI route cos the MCU is positively allergic to in-camera FX. Heck I'd not even assume they'll use green makeup, rather than some digital correction.

This and Moon Knight would be the two upcoming shows I have an eye on. Maslany is a critically underappreciated actor after Orphan Black; once again Marvel casts well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,729 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Given how they're modifying Ms Marvel's powers to make CGI easier, I imagine the actress will just be painted green and touched up with a little CGI, but just be normal height/stature other than that. Save the CGI budget for Hulk and Abomination since their appearance already needs CGI to match their film appearance.

Maslany is fantastic in Orphan Black to which was critically acclaimed, not sure how she is underappreciated by the critics since? she's not exactly been prolific in her roles after that show ended.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Critically acclaimed but the show seemed a bit of cult hit, rather than a popular, mainstream one. Maybe due to BBC America bring quite niche, who knows. While the show didn't seem to propel Maslany onwards (though who knows if that was her choice or not)

Her legs definitely looked super skinny. I'm surprised they didn't at least go with a muscular body double for some of the She-Hulk body shots. Obviously they are in a tough position if they are going to have Jennifer using her original body rather than having her remain as She-Hulk the majority of the time, as she has tended to for most of her comicbook history. But an actor with the stature of Frankie Adams would have been a better fit for the Hulk aspects.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Wrongway1985

Yeah the show is certainly of cult status but she scooped many an award for it and even a Golden Globe nomination, I don't think it lies with the critics that she hasn't been propelled but what better platform than Marvel now if the show is a success even if acting chops aren't the forefront for a lot of these projects.

I don't think it's a stretch to compare with Jodie Comer, when I was watching Orphan Black at the time I was sure I was watching someone who would be a mainstay in future big projects the same way when I first saw Jodie in Killing Eve (also BBC America).

The show ended in 2017 since then she was a lead in Perry Mason on HBO and done a lot of voice acting for shows as well as been in 3/4 movies that pretty prolific I would say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Wrongway1985

Haven't seen Perry Mason but doesn't appear she is a lead more part of the main supporting cast but willing to accept she is.

I didn't say she wasn't a capable working actress since but 3 indie movies with no significant promotion just isn't the trajectory I'd have assumed for her.

On investigation the voice roles one stems from the same universe (relatively successful) but the other has already been cancelled after just one season.

She was brilliant in Perry Mason, which is also a pretty good show.

Reports that She-Hulk will out do Deadpool on 4th wall breaking.

    Also an expected appearance from....

Spider Man No Way Home spoiler.

Matt Murdock which will lead to him being a major player across the MCU series on Disney+

Superhero landings! 🙂 How can I not remember any big jumping like that since the Bana movie?

There must have been some scenes of big jumps in the MCU before now right?

The first Avengers movie maybe? Think he jumped around NYC a bit. 😅

from the trailer, is Marvel getting to the parody stage?

Iron Man is surely the biggest culprit.

The CGI really doesn't look great. I think it's because it's just her face but green, whereas with Hulk because it's not exactly Ruffalo's face it's not as noticeable. Hopefully won't detract too much. It looks pretty fun though, and I know a lot of people don't seem to have liked Smart Hulk in Endgame, but I enjoyed it a lot.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Looks like a bit of fun, though it'd be cool if they fully committed to the lawyer part and had it just about her travails of a law career mixed with occasional hulk outs. Doesn't need big conspiracies or whatnot to work.

As to the CGI, it's not bad, but I see why it's a bit funny looking all the same. She just looks like a greener, taller version, rather than something monstrous like Mr Hulk, so the Uncanny Valley alarm goes off quicker.

Must check Shang Chi again but hadn't he gone back to human Banner by then? Or was it just the holo call portraying him that way?

    This too shall pass.

    think i'll pass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,729 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah, but I think there was also an official set-photo (not a leak) from She-Hulk released showing him in Banner form too, so maybe he'll find a way to be able to change between the two during the show.

I adore that Tim Roth is back. Great casting it seems, but the CGI seems dodgy and tbf it's starting to rack up complaints for the MCU as a whole, not entirely baseless.

    eg.

Completely unrelated to this I'd watched several seasons of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law recently. This is not that, but if people are interested it's basically the same tangential premise, superhero attys for superhero clients, except birdman was an attorney for fred flintstone, the jetsons, and everyone else you could think Hanna Barbara had a hold of.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,411 ✭✭✭✭flazio

In fairness they used to just swap out Bill Bixby for Lou Ferrigo so *shrug* Imagine if Malslanny just played Jennifer Walters and some WNBA player comes in when she hulks out, fandom would be split down the middle between people loving the 80s series throwback and angry at the cost cutting.

What would worry me is that if it's a case that Bruce can switch between Human and Hulk at will that he has reason to be Hulk in the relevant scenes because that would be a massive waste of cgi money if he could have played out as human.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,444 ✭✭✭DMcL1971

I wouldn't worry about the quality of the CGI work. The show is still 3 months away so no doubt they are still refining it. There have been may times in the past that the trailer for a movie has been criticised for having ropey looking effects but the fact is they are usually still refining the look right up until the last minute. I'd reserve judgement until the show is actually broadcast.

I don't even mind if the CGI is bad as long as the story and acting are good and Tatiana Maslany certainly knows how to act.

Without checking, did Marvel change their FX houses? Or is it simply a case if having things fast, cheap or good and you gotta pick two ... cos iirc Thanos looked great back in 2018, both present with some heft in the scene and fairly emotive too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

My reaction was that they were moving Hulk from Movie budget to TV budget.

Visual effects seem to be tiered and my impression is that TV shows have to use them sparinginly compared to films. Many, I think, figure out story tricks and such not to need to use them for chunks of time. That can be good for a show like if a big special effect tech/powerup or something comes along and saves the day at a last minute. Likewise.. when one comes along and moves a baddies plot along to make em more ominious or powerful than seemed previously.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,878 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

I was kind of looking forward to this....really good actress in the lead (she is outstanding in orphan black)

But this trailer doesn't seem great...the tone seems a bit odd...CGI dodgy...

The title is a bit cheesy as well...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,492 ✭✭✭brianregan09

The CGI has always been ropey in places but it's never taken away from anything cos the content ,story etc is enough to keep me engaged , you bring up Thanos but in the same infinity war we saw a bruce banner head floating free flow in the Hulkbuster armor lol

I wonder is this where we will get the reported Disney+ Daredevil introduced by the back door in a lawyer vs. lawyer court room scene.
