Booked in with Dr McCormick at start of October. Thanks to all here for sharing their stories. Have two perfect kids, neither of us want any more. Happy to start being able to do things as a family of four and give the kids the best we can without the worry of another arriving unexpectedly. I supposed no procedure is risk free, but then I supposed getting into the car isn't either. All about looking at the risk and reward. Any advice on pre -op from those who've been there, done that, greatly appreciated. I'll stick a post up myself post and share my experience. Nervous about it, but also thinking it's something I wish I done 6 months ago.

My experience has been very positive. I had very little pain, and what discomfort there was didn't last long.

I would say go ahead with good confidence, but err on the side of caution in terms of recovery. I think that Sync covered a lot with his post.

Regarding pain killers, Dr. McCormick said to me (and i have heard it before from pain specialists) that it is easier to stop pain starting than to address it when it has started. So take the nurofen and paracetamol according to the maximum amount you can take/day over the first few days. Don't wait until you are in pain.

There are a very small number of people who experience chronic pain after a vasectomy. In those very small number of cases it can be difficult to resolve. That is probably the most significant risk with the operation (significant as in it would be a big problem - but the chances of it happening are very low). But it is better to stop those pain pathways getting established in the first few days after the operation. Hence, take the painkillers!

I did get a jockstrap. If you do a search for vasectomy and jockstrap, you will see that it is recommended as standard. The level of support is significantly different from briefs or boxer briefs - I really noticed that when I stopped wearing the jock and changed to briefs. Wearing tight pairs of briefs/boxers has a different effect, as they kind of squash your balls. The jockstrap lifts and supports them - a bit like a bra for your balls. Dr. McCormick used to supply the jockstrap after the vasectomy, but he said that after brexit/covid etc., it was hard to source them and people used to complain that they are uncomfortable, so he stopped and now just leaves it up to people to either get their own or go with tight underwear. It is true - they are a bit uncomfortable, particularly at night. But as with the painkillers, I figured that it is better to err on the side of caution in this. As an aside, if you search amazon for jockstraps, you will enter a whole other world, as they popular for both sports (mainly in US, but also over here for martial arts etc.) and as kinky underwear. Some of them are basically just briefs with the backside cut out of them - that is not what you are looking for! Boards won't allow me to post links, but if you send a pm, i can send you on a link of the one I got.

Last thing, about a week or so after it, i started to feel some discomfort, and regular ejaculation seemed to help with it. I guess it relieves the pressure or something like that. So a good excuse for more sex!

From my experience, the wound (which was tiny) healed really well. Not surprising to have blood stains on the first day. I think i left the dressing (which was just a folded piece of gauze) off from the second day, and i didn't notice any blood stains after that.

Had mine yesterday with Dr Killian Bates in Sandymount.

Only problem whatsoever was finding somewhere to park.

In and out in 30 minutes. Took 2 panadol immediately after and going to bed but none today, but have them in my pocket. No trouble getting to work as working from desk in my bedroom anyway.

Anyone had discomfort with playing football ?, i.e kicking a ball ? 3 months later, still feeling it slightly , like a sensitive sharp pain when booting a ball.

Try clearing the pipes. I found it relieved the pressure.

Not sure if that is a typo, but if you are comparing circumcision in the US to vasectomy here, i guess they are very different procedures so likely the difference is more due to the procedure than the country.

Apart from the 150 mile round trip on Day 4?

Is "more sore" still not very sore, or is it significantly sore? If significantly sore, look at what you are doing, and consider ibuprofen, supportive underwear and ejaculation (not in that order!). Also, take it easy on the exercise etc.

I guess there will be lots of twinges and vague pains over the coming days. You might be walking differently in order to mind your balls, and have strained a muscle in your groin. You know what needs to be done: take it easy, good supportive underwear, fairly regular ejaculation, and if you have pain don't be shy about taking ibuprofen (within the limits set on the package). If you have pain that is not addressed by all that and it lasts more than a few days, no harm to contact the doctor that did the op.
