it's only the beginning, the trump courses will be great, along with all the new courses and ones to come later. Has there been a ladies tour created for LIV yet ? I would imagine the women would jump at the chance to get paid way better than they do now, i did hear they plan mixed competitions which would be great to watch

Just ironing out a few details afaik.

Apparently the ladies are looking for them to drop the "stoned to death" clause for a double bogey or worse.

Of course the human rights record is terrible in Saudi but do they hand out Assault Riffles to teenagers? Possibly do.

I'll wait to see - but my point is the two trump courses being used cannot be that special - they're not even in the top ten in their state never mind world top courses

It seems more like a retirement package thing for golfers who's best days are behind them. I think the European tour will be hit the most.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,276 ✭✭✭thefallingman

Don't be fooled the prize money is going to be multiples of the pga tour, Dj is the first top tier player, but many will follow. Martin Kaymer and Garcia are hardly over the hill either. This is only the beginning

No brainer for the European tour lads, make a fortune as soon as possible and retire nice and early.

Agree if that's their goal it is a simple choice (I think) - but question for me is if thefallingman isn't correct & all the big names don't jump ship - how long is LIV golf happy for fill the coffers of a bunch of eurotour/asian tour/aging stars.

For me Sergio & Kaymer if they're not over the hill - they're approaching the top - Kaymer has two top 10's in Europe in the last 2 years & world rank 205, Sergio has had no top ten this year - had 6 total last year & hasn't been in the world top 40 since 2020 - not exactly burning it up out there.

Guaranteed sign-on bonus, appearance fees, no cuts, and guaranteed prize money in small fields that aren't elite. Purely from that perspective, it's incredibly enticing. You can easily green up here. The early adopters probably have the best opportunities before the fields become deeper and more difficult. Not that I agree with any of it in any way but the cat is amongst the pigeons now. Let's see what the PGA decides to do.

Will the even be televised and if so on what network?

Interested to see what Sky's relationship is like with PGA/DP Tour in terms of exclusivity.

I think in essence this is a similiar to a scenario where the incumbent workers vote for an agreement that will richly reward them but will damage the lot of future employees.

Hats off to DJ if he's getting 150 million. I'd probable let a sheikh $hit in my mouth for that kind of coin.

For me, the success/failure of this is very finely balanced. If they don't get more big names (and by that I would say 10 of the Top 20 or 20 of the Top 50) signed up within the first year then it's destined to fail imo.

People won't tune in, I certainly wouldn't be watching it based on the current field.

Now, LIV might have to the money to fund it for years and years regardless of viewership or the presence of a real top quality field... but if the top players in the world see it start slow, and continue slow, they'll be less and less likely to risk making the jump as time goes on.

Most of the top players in the world have a long career ahead of them. The additional money offered by LIV will be weighed up versus the big money on offer by the PGA Tour and the security on offer in terms of longevity.

On the other hand, if LIV get a bit of momentum and players start to jump, there could be a domino effect and have a packed field fairly quickly. I can't see that happening without compromise/some sort of agreement between the tours, and that seems very unlikely.

I must admit I’ll be intrigued to see the first one, if some nobody ends up winning the 4 million first prize it will be interesting. If it’s some has been like Garcia or Kaymer win then no thanks.

I definitely won’t be tuning in based on those names/venues. There’s definitely an opening for something innovative on great courses- this isn’t it

Phil Mickelson is behaving bizarrely. It has been something like 4 months since his comments and he is making a bigger meal out of them than anyone else. Probably a sense of ego that he thinks people care more about him than they actually do. Now he is going missing for the LIV opening event.

Easiest TV coverage ever right now - 1 camera crew follow DJ, & who else Sergio/Westy/Gooch/Na??? a few cameras around the course...

The Players Championship had 120 cameras!!!

He's also been outed as a compulsive/problem gambler on the eve of the PGA by the same douche who dropped him in it over the Saudis.

Anyone read the book yet? Is it even available?

I don't know what Phil was thinking shooting the breeze with a guy writing an unauthorized biography on him, crazy!

I'd say Phil is feeling uncomfortable right now either way, he's been a punching bag and his reputation has taken a big kicking. Maybe there's even marital/familial fallout from all the revelations.

I'd love to see him front up and tell everyone to F off, but maybe he is feeling vulnerable right now?

It's funny that nearly every Saffa is playing! Think Greg has made a mistake not making this more about the non-American and to an extent non-European players and courses.

If he got Matsuyama, Cam Smith, Scott, Im, Day, hell even Vijay, and all the top international guys (he has Oosty and Grace) and made sure to play in one of the best courses in the world outside of America and Europe. Then it might be considered somewhat noble to break the Western hegemony.

Instead it's almost a personal powerplay against the PGA Tour and we all know it's really a sports washing exercise, so it has to include the top players and be played and televised in Western markets.

It's very depressing if you think about it too much.

For me I would tune in to watch the global best play a somewhat different format in spectacular global courses. But to watch a reduced field event over 1 day less on a mediocre course, where's the appeal exactly?!

And as has been said if there's no appeal, there's no sports washing and then eventually the money will dry up.

I can see the appeal of LIV for guys not from the US. Loads of money, less events so less travelling which means they get to spend a lot more time at home as opposed to having to live in the US

There's a difference between - likes to gamble, have a good time, leave big tips in casinos to losing €40 million over 4 years, is a compulsive gambler, checking results while competing in major tournaments and the like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,110 ✭✭✭Xander10

Common knowledge, his problem gambling. That was the point I was making.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,324 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

But that problem gambling has been known for years Big. Can't recall exactly but it was in the news about 4 years ago iirc that he was nearly broke / in big trouble because of it.

    Edit: as below

    2017 Golf Digest article

    https://www.golfdigest.com/story/phils-insider-trading-escape

"For example, according to a sworn statement by Mickelson's business manager, on Sept. 19, 2012, Mickelson paid Walters $1,950,000 to cover a debt "related to sports gambling.

Furthermore, his manager acknowledged, Mickelson "owed similar debts to Mr. Walters in the past, and had repaid them." Against those kinds of losses, Mickelson's fortunate bet on one Super Bowl looks less impressive. Still, considering that in 2012 alone Mickelson made a reported $48 million from golf winnings and endorsements, his wagering looks like a pricey but affordable hobby."

Yeah I remember the SEC case, but I dunno, I think there's a difference between some conjecture and rumour and a more detailed breakdown of compulsive behaviour coming on the back of his exile and the fallout of the Saudi comments.

People who follow golf "compulsively" 😉 knew of these things but they weren't presented as absolutely as they are now in wider media circles.

And Phil's behaviour was largely protected because of who he is, that protection has now largely disintegrated and it's become open season on him.

I just think there's a possibility in this moment, that he may actually be struggling with everything and may explain why he hasn't just toughed it out and turned up to the PGA and entered for next week (he may yet of course).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭dublin49

I have followed golf coverage for 40 years ,avidly when Paddy came to prominence and I never knew about Phil's gambling issues.I wasnt reading extensively about golf per se through those years but I would'nt pass a column about golf in the main street press either. So the media knowingly kept this quiet all those years.

Specifically on the "shooting the breeze" Shipnuck had been trying for over a year to get Phil to take part in the book - to no avail, then out of the blue Phil rings him - they speak on the phone for over an hour... So Phil rings up the guy he knows is writing a deep dive book on him & then later tries to claim he never knew it was on the record...
