is giggs still the 'manager' of wales?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

It's tough on Ukraine. They were by far the better team. Had so many chances, some poor finishing, unlucky finishing, good saves, fortunate saves have denied them. Plus Ukraine should have had a nailed on penalty, disgraceful decision making all-round. And they went out because of a very fortunate own goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,933 ✭✭✭kksaints

Could do with seeing the Refs report on the penalty call.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭McGrath5

Ukraine very hard done by with the non penalty and general play.

Nice to see Bale will be getting his step count up this November.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,238 ✭✭✭✭briany

If Ukraine feels hard done by in the match, they can always ask to be included as the 33rd team in the WC.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,938 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Well done to Wales. I think on balance they just about deserved it but hard on Ukraine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,945 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

Technically he is but is on suspension until his court case is resolved.

Personally i, and most other Welsh fans i know, don't want him back at all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,258 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

similar to greenwood so. right now these are only allegations and with the quagmire that is employment law you cant just sack. so suspend pending investigation is the only course of action an employer can take.

Ah come on. Only a complete bunch of chancers would try that............

I was being mainly tongue in cheek. If Ukraine were to ask, it wouldn't surprise me if FIFA said OK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭ebbsy

Well done to Wales, deserved to qualify, especially with their performances in the group.

Its not their fault Ukraine could not put their chances away.

I also feel sad for Ukraine, and if they were put through to the World Cup anyway, I certainly would not have a problem with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Ukraine also have the problem that a lot of teams suffer from nowadays.

Pretty and technical enough up to the final third, but then lack a really good goalscorer.

Absolutely delighted Wales won! We won't have to hear an ounce of pandering bullshit or see any yellow and blue flag waving crap throughout the World Cup.

Interesting to read that Noel Mooney, who served as the interim General Manager of the FAI during its crisis-ridden days of 2019, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Football Association of Wales.

Is there anything in this Ecuador story ????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

If there is it could lead to a mess if they bring Chile into the World Cup and not Peru who are scheduled for a play off.

    What’s the story ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Ecuador are alleged to have played ineligible player Byron Castillo, FIFA are investigating it and it could lead to the being excluded from the World Cup.

How desperate, and clever, are Chile?

They would gain 5 points if all the Ecuador games are settled at 3-0 to the opponents, and that would move them up to 4th, even ahead of play-off bound Peru!

Italy are trying to sneak in on the act, by saying that they are the highest rated team not at the tournament!! That's a serious stretch though!!!

A team has never been thrown out this late on though, i.e. post-qualification.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭ebbsy

Id say the Peru playoff is set in stone.

    Italy ? No chance

    Possibly a playoff between Colombia/Chile ?

I would say that FIFA will do what they always do, take the easy option and throw out Chile's appeal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭ebbsy

They took the last option, no surprise, Chile should have stuck in an appeal right after the matches in question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭ebbsy

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has rendered its decision in relation to the potential ineligibility of the player Byron David Castillo Segura with regard to his participation in eight qualifying matches of the national team of the Ecuadorian Football Association (FEF) in the preliminary competition of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.

After analysing the submissions of all parties concerned and considering all elements brought before it, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to close the proceedings initiated against the FEF.

The Disciplinary Committee’s findings were notified today to the parties concerned. In accordance with the relevant provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the parties have ten days in which to request a motivated decision, which, if requested, would subsequently be published on legal.fifa.com. The present decision remains subject to an appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.

This is good news, the absolute state of whoever chanced their arm with this nonsense in Chile. Particularly given their history of trying to cheat their way to the World Cup

Australia and Peru going to penalties shortly. Both teams looked terrified of losing.

Pen shoot out now between Australia and Peru, with Australia just now making a sub keeper just before the end of the game. It is on BBC Sport app and website if you have access.

Australia have brought on a dancing keeper for the penalties to entertain everyone after a very dull game

I didn't think your man dancing would save any of them but he got his moment.

Both awful. So many of these big games now are terrible spectacles.

Modern football tactics, no-one wants to go out and actually win the game.

Suspect the wc is going to be a stinker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Why was that game played in qatar, just to give them a dry run at it? That game kicked off at 9pm local time, which was 4am tuesday sydney time, and 2pm monday peru time. I understand the need for a neutral venue, but have it somewhere a bit handier for both.

I really have no interest in this world cup, lack of ireland, getting old and the general stench of having it in qatar in winter has completely disillusioned me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,742 ✭✭✭Dr. Bre

It use to be a 2 leg affair but changed to one game in neutral venue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭ebbsy

I would not be crying for the South Americans too much, they always got more than their fair share of qualifying places and in 2026 they will have 6 places + 1 possible playoff place.

Not looking forward to having Australia there as they play very negatively.

However, was amazed at how many games they had to play, 20 and how many were away from home, 16.

Manager seemed very genuine and thanked his big brother for raising him after their parents died.

5th appearance in a row but no wins in the last two. They have been paired, yet again, with France and Denmark, similar to 2018.

The 4th team in that group in Russia ......... Peru !

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,711 ✭✭✭dr.kenneth noisewater

Yeah they had to play so many away games as the government there still had the 2 week quarantine in place for most of qualifying. They seem a lot weaker than previous world cups based on the players in the squad including many A-League players. The standard of the A-league seems to have dropped in recent years based on any games I've seen this year and their AFC champions league performances.

I love watching football just as much as the next guy here (especially the World Cup) but jeez, 4 games a day for the group stage is just too much football. I get the reasoning - they need to run off games quicker as they've a smaller window to finish the WC within but it's just another reason why this WC being in Qatar and at the end of the year is a joke. Three games a day is the most that should be done, spread out nicely between lunchtime, early evening and late evening/night. There's just enough time to digest and analyse the previous game. Sandwiching in another game I feel nearly removes that chance to assess what happened, particularly crap if it was a game with a lot of drama and talking points and they need to cut off to the next game. It will all feel a bit rushed.

Also (and I'm sure it has been asked), why is Netherlands v Senegal the opening game and not Qatar v Ecuador? There's even the Group B match between England and Iran played before the hosts play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Maybe they want the hosts at a time people can see the game. First 2 games most people will be at work.

I wont be too sad about missing England vs Iran to be honest.

Poland have taken the decision to exclude Maciej Rybus from selection for their 2022 WC squad, as he has just signed for Spartak Moscow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Seems to be a lot of talk about starting Qatar v Ecuador a day early (evening of Sunday 20th) and having just 3 games on the Monday with Netherlands v Senegal moving to the 4pm slot (our time).

I guess it allows time to have a bigger opening ceremony if Qatar Ecuador is a stand-alone game at 'prime-time'.

Qualification is officially completed now there was on game remaining to be played between Brazil and Argentina that was suspended after 5 because of COVID. It was scheduled to be played in September but Argentina have paid a fine and FIFA have cancelled the game.

World cup now starts on Sunday 20th November

    Sunday 20th November
