Is leaving it plugged in once the charge completes an issue at all?

    No issue there.

Almost 12 months into my id3 journey, 13000 kms, so far no issues, been to Belmullet, Clare and now up in Ballymena, would never go back to an ICE, the other car still gets used, but I would say we get away with 70 a month in diesel in it

We are reluctantly bringing our ICE to Connemara this month. Not because of the charging, but because we need to bring a roofbox (family camping for several days!).

Having an issue with my navigation system ( or maybe its just the way it is )

Searching for a search or location by pinch zooming and panning around is weird, initally I can drag the map around with one finger, then is seems to stop and I need two fingers on the map to move it around - eventually it comes back again. Also seems to get a lot of phantom touches when my finger is near. I like the navigation system, but in terms of small street names or small business addresses it can't do it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 520 ✭✭✭electricus

your map zoom issue sounds like a temporary glitch, I find the nav app can be slow to react if it hasn’t been used for a while.

the phantom touch problem sounds like gesture or proximity detection - like the way text is displayed for menu items when a finger is detected. I think that behaviour can be switched off in settings.

Thanks, does explain why its an issue a) in a new place or b) setting a destination just after getting in.

Considering picking up a second hand ID.3. Have test driven it, and really impressed. A few questions I would like some help with please! How do I check the software version? I should insist it's at least 2.3 before I agree to collection, right?

In terms of charging cables, what type(s) should I make sure are included?

The dealer said they work with a third party to get chargers installed at home, they look after the grant application etc.. Is this the best option, or is organising this myself a better idea?

Luckily, it already has 4 new Goodyear tyres - which from this thread, I understand are a better tyre than the Bridgestone. Must have been replaced recently. Car has 6k on the clock.

Any other tips for a new ID.3 owner? I'm coming from:

    Seat Ibiza 2001 1litre petrol

    VW Golf 2008 2.0 TDI

Skoda Rapid 2017 1 litre petrol

Skoda Superb 2020 1.4 litre petrol

    Nope. Just enjoy it!

It should come with a granny cable that goes into house socket and type 2 cable. That would go into the public chargers

i think if I were going again I’d get a specialist to install the home charger. Our electrician didn’t do it correctly

  • Registered Users Posts: 193 ✭✭bodgerfederer

Granny cable + type 2 cable.

i wouldn’t mind the software - no difference between 2.3 and earlier versions as far as I can see.

if you’re buying from a vw dealer I would insist that he puts you at the front of the queue for the 2.4 software and battery update - that should actually be a thing worth having.

The grant/charger install is all fairly straightforward whichever way you do it. You need to ask yourself what type of charge point you want and does the dealer’s crowd offer it? - do you want something compatible with solar panels for example?

Obviously check but I imagine the price they charge will be broadly in line with what anyone else charges.

    Good luck!

As others have said ensure the two cables are in car. And make sure the type two is a 3 phase one.

Would be surprised if the tyres had been changed at 6K, are you sure they are not originals? Otherwise just check all the usual things such as wheel damage, body damage, stone chips etc. They can all be repaired easily prior to collection if purchasing.

I find the same, it seems to panic if not given time to load up properly.

The occasional ‘x service not available’ errors seem to occur for the same reason. Hopefully the software update will sort it out.

Its a warning that you won't get to your destination without the orange "low battery" light comming on.

Just fitted the Bosch wipers on your recommendation..On the ball, what a difference to the clearing of the windscreen.

    Super job..

Not really. If its a 1st edition ID.3 it will have to go back to the dealer anyway for the 2.4 update which will be done for free later this year so dont worry about the software.

Luckily, it already has 4 new Goodyear tyres - which from this thread, I understand are a better tyre than the Bridgestone. Must have been replaced recently. Car has 6k on the clock.

At 6k, they must be the originals. You'll get 20k+ out of them.

Is it a dealer demo model you are buying?

The dealer said they work with a third party to get chargers installed at home, they look after the grant application etc.. Is this the best option, or is organising this myself a better idea?

If you are happy with the installer and they give you a good price and provide the charge point you want, then thats all fine, but you should come back here and let us know what they quote you and what they are providing so we can give you opinion on whether its good value or not. Just because the dealer is recommending them doesnt mean they are good or good value! ;)

Also possibly if the car is a 1st, then there may be options included when new such as servicing/free tyres etc. Probably all the free charging has expired at this stage. Don't know if any of these are transferable..

Does anyone know the equivalent for the rear wiper?

You never know, if it was a dealer car there could have been some hard wellying done.

Compare my Bridgestones with 7k miles to my Nokians with 5k miles. The Bridgestones are pretty well down.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,557 ✭✭✭GrumPy

I'll ask the dealer. The tyres look brand new, they have those little rubber 'tails' sticking out the sides, not sure the technical name! 😅

    Edit: 'Nippers' or tyre 'hairs'

I gave my Goodyears a shave after about 10K.😁. The whiskers were casting shadows on the alloys, kept thinking I had scratched them..

Edit. I see them on the wifes' Ioniq 5 as well after about 8K. They show up over the silver part of the alloys from some angles. Must get out the surgical scissors..😊

Thanks for all the tips, guys. Car might be ready to collect tomorrow, if not Saturday. Any recommendations for the best app to use to locate nearby charge points in your area?

Is it true some Lidls have free charge points for EV driving customers? I know my local Lidl definitely doesn't have one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,766 ✭✭✭cython

That is indeed true about some Lidl stores, but anecdotally they seem to have stopped rolling out any more free slow/AC chargers in favour of fast/DC chargers where there is a fee charged, but they're competitively priced.

  • Registered Users Posts: 105 ✭✭VWPAT

I use the esb app. Also the google app on vehicle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,243 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

EasyGo is the app for the free Lidl chargers. If you live in a built up area don't get your hopes up. The one beside me is regularly abused or down, both are currently occupied and it's 2am. There's no time limit on them which is silly, needs to be capped at 1 hour...

Plug Share seems to be a popular one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,061 ✭✭✭Comer1

Yes, but a better solution would be to have no free public chargers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭RevID3

Usually free but don't hold your breath on pumping any kind of mileage into the battery.

Lucky to get 5 km after an hour...Verrrrrry Slowwww.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,766 ✭✭✭cython

Are you referring to the free Lidl A/C ones? I can't say I've observed the same with any I've used being 22kW, and charging my eNiro steadily at 11kW (max the car can do) when plugged in, which would basically get it from 0 to full in ~6 hours. Not that I've ever done anything near that, though other locals seem happy to do so, as I've seen a Tesla plugged in with 20kWh taken and still going. Based on my own charging keeping pace with it once started, that puts it at nearly 2 hours charging at that point.

I'd concur with the previous poster(s) who said they tend to be abused though, having seen both connectors in my local occupied at around 6am on more than one occasion according to the app. Presumably people living in a nearby housing estate who park there overnight for free electricity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭RevID3

I tried the Aldi in Douglas Cork..7kw an hour...Maybe the Lidl one's are faster..

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,515 ✭✭✭eagerv

I have been to two different ones over the last year while shopping. Both gave me about 11kW (Max car can take) so in the hour at each got about 70kms.

They will upgrade them all soon to paid DC charging which is more suited to the shopping model.

This also ties in with the new parking restrictions/clamping at Lidl stores
