Mod: on the back of flippant posts in reply to other posts in the thread posters are reminded this is a discussion forum. All posters should be prepared to argue cogently and coherently in support of your argument as noted in the charter.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you contribute in a positive manner, that does not mean you have to agree with everyone else but you must avoid deliberate disruption of the forum.

Posting to say a person is deluded, starting with hahaha, lol, hilarious etc is likely to be viewed as baiting and posters not even bothering to put forward a counter argument will be sure to get cards.

Posting the same points over and over again in reply to others while ignoring another posters points will also see cards for posters that will be viewed as disrupting the thread.

Middlesbrough linked with a move for Troy Parrott. I think he'd fit in well as a number 10 at Boro, similar to the position he took up against Scotland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Swansea, Middlesbrough, Preston and QPR linked with a loan move. Though Spurs are supposedly looking for a loan move that will see him play as the number 9 according to Alasdair Gold. Could see it being QPR but would love it to be Swansea for him and Obafemi to develop a partnership at club and international level.

Russell Martin took him to Swansea so you know he likes Parrott, but couldn't see it happening if Spurs want him to play as a number 9 next year and Swansea also have Piroe though he could get a big money move.

Losing to Portugal was possibly our best performance.

Id give Hogan a go. He looked up for it when he came on the other night. Id like us to stick with the same shape/tactics as Saturday

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Hopefully this is Kenny playing possum, but you would have to believe he's out given he went off so early on Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,451 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

That's really unfortunate. We're not far off half the first choice 11 being unavailable.

Would echo other comments, swap out the injured personel but keep the same system/shape as Scottish game.

Yeah would give Hogan a run as he looked lively when he came on and probably had a legit goal denied.

Gonna be a tough game and Ukraine probably back to near full strength if not full strength for this game. Draw be a fantastic result and hope the other game ends in a draw also. September will be the two big games in deciding whether we finish second or not.

Can't see it being like Egan. Team are doing some training at stadium and looks like Obafemi isn't involved. Ogbene is doing his own bits.

Given his injury history they likely play it safe with Obafemi. Would be our luck he'd end up with a long term injury ruining the start of his season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

    More than half.

    We are actually missing:

    Bazunu

    Coleman

    Doherty

    Duffy

    Egan

    Omobamidele

    Idah

    Obafemi

All of whom you could argue are first XI

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,177 ✭✭✭Fandymo

Less than 3 years ago we were a solitary goal vs Denmark away from taking their automatic place in the Euros. I think Bazunu is a better goalie than Randolph was. Collins looks to have a great future ahead of him, if he were English he’d be a lot more hyped. Cullen is better than Whelan. Obafemi already looks better than McGoldrick who was nowhere near international level at that age.

The rest of the team from that qualifying tournament is still playing for Ireland. The Swiss squad is still pretty much the same as it was then, and we were only 4 point off them before the upgrades mentioned above.

We were constantly told that McCarthy was restricting the players, now most of the same players are still playing for Kenny and we suddenly don’t have the players.

Was listening to Off The Ball this morning, might have been a replay from one of their shows over the weekend, Shane Keegan made an interesting point regarding xG and said that the xG was actually much closer in the game vs Scotland than it was in the other two games. Yet in all 3 of them we had the higher 'expected goals' which indicates we created the better chances.

Now I'm not a big lover of some of these stats as I feel they oversimplify what you see with your own two eyes, to my mind there is no doubt we deserved to lose to Ukraine and deserved to beat Scotland, but it is interesting to note how by the goal going in how it changes your entire perpection of the match. I think Kenny even referenced it after the Scotland game that in his opinion we didn't necessarily play way, way better than some other games, just the difference was the goals flew in this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,095 ✭✭✭trashcan

I’d play Ogbene if Obafemi isn’t fit.(and if Ogbene is, obviously.) I think this is a game that could suit him. He is a great out ball if we’re under pressure and is capable of causing problems. To be honest I’m surprised at the amount of criticism he’s been getting since the Armenia and Ukraine games.

Dont see us winning here, but a draw would be a decent result. Cullen, Molumby and Knight should all start in the middle, to try and stop Ukraine play8ng through us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Confirmed in squad submission to UEFA:

    Obafemi out

    Festy on the bench

Jimmy Dunne misses out on squad

Sad news. Wasn't old enough to see him play but seemed like good player. Have to admire a guy back then taking his chance in Germany.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

It's Manning's birthday today, and he actually made a squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,407 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

I think we can get a result today. Not getting beat would be a huge step forward. Need to become more consistent and be able to get results in these scenarios. Loads of confidence from Saturday, very hopeful we get something from it.

Vincent Kompany appointed manager of Burnley. I wonder might he sign Josh Cullen? Would be a good move for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

    I was so confused there.

    You mean Burnley not Anderlecht!

Aye! I was thinking, "That's an odd lateral move to be that big a deal to post about"

    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

It's a position they need filled long term but it's gonna depend on the funds they have. Can't see Kompany taking the Burnley job though if there isn't money to spend on some players. His contacts with Man City might get them a couple of players but that squad needs rebuilding.

Cullen was a key player for him and how his Anderlecht team played so could see him making a move for Cullen. Still think West Ham will bring him in to replace Noble and chances are he'll follow the money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

You'd prefer that if Anderlecth could afford to keep Cullen that he stay put. We don't need another player in the championship and I think having him playing on the continent is much better for us. Unless he were to move to the PL with a chance of decent game time I'd fear for him over the next few years. He could stagnate big time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

I can't see Burnley having the money to sign Cullen. They've already had a half dozen senior team players walk out after their contracts have expired. There could easily be another 3-4 players sold to cover their debt. Realistically Burnley will probably need to bring in about 10 players to give them the sort of squad depth that's required for the Championship. When you need so many bodies can they really justify the £5m or so you'd imagine it would take to bring Cullen in?

On the bright side, three of Burnley's senior central defenders have already left (and Collins may still yet leave). It's quite possible Kevin Long will be their only senior defender. Good chance he'll be playing a lot of games this coming season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Ronan Curtis being linked away from Portsmouth with Hibs being touted as a possible destination.

Would be a disappointing sideways move if it happened, considering the Championship interest he had last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Can't see him moving anywhere this season. His partner is from Portsmouth and is due a baby in September. During the season they had two miscarriages so can see him being happy to stay at Portsmouth for a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Ferguson gets a start, and midfield trio of Coventry, Kilkenny, and Smallbone.

    silly challenge, penalty Italy 1-0

Stupid defending, pen conceded by mcguinness, 1-0 Italy

These lads are too slow and ponderous in their build up. Nothing to lose here, just have a go at them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,612 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

Bit better there. I think when they put the pressure on that Italy look like they could be got at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,133 ✭✭✭Mervyn Skidmore

A playoff it is for the u21. Poor goalkeeping for the second goal. Mistakes leading to both goals.

    Armenia leading Scotland early on

I think this is Crawford all over. He seems to send the team out not to lose rather than to win. Every game.

They had a free hit to go and take on Italy and he sends them out to time waste in the first half.

For those who wanted Smallbone called up to the senior squad, he has been largely anonomyous for the 21s despite one or 2 nice touches. Clearly not ready for the step up yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭The White Feather

Jeez that defending was so bad. Brain dead stuff and gifts them a goal

  • Registered Users Posts: 738 ✭✭✭athlone99

Maher and McGuinness have been so good last few games. McGuinness has to take the blame on the 3rd, just has to get rid 40 secs into the 2nd half.

On the otherhand all 3 goals were avoidable so at least can take some positives from that.

    Erin Cashin is rubbish

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,067 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

Whatever chance Armenia had against scotland went down the swanny with that stupid player. Right in front of the ref

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Also the player that threw a water bottle at the linesman in the other game against Scotland.

Realistically Ukraine should be far too strong for us tonight. Even with a full squad we'd struggle but with the injuries we can't expect too much

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Poor enough tbh. Eiri Cashin poor. And some have him ahead of McGuinness for a call up. LOL.

    Scott Hogan in for Obafemi

Lenihan and O'Shea in for Duffy and Egan

Rest of the lineup is the same as Saturday

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,762 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Very strong Ukraine side. Could be a long, long night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

We were played off the park by Italy, but it's no disgrace as the gulf in class between the two teams was clearly massive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

At first look that's 8 of the 11 that started the play offs, only the GK, LW, and CF that didn't start on the play offs.
