My work events never really stopped that much over the last couple of years, only during the real major lockdowns- we always tried to have a few drinks on a Friday so long as there was a pub open somewhere! 😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

When there was first talk of going back to the office earlier this year, the only reason my boss (new to company) had to come back was to socialise with work colleagues. I told her that I never did it before so why would I do it now. She didn't know what to say!

It's not that I don't like the people I work with, I just have no interest in going out with them outside of work.

    Morning all

Another dull and coolish start here. Weather is not really summery at all.

Full week of work this week so weekend seems ageeeeeeeee away :)

We had our first office social event the week before last, which was the first since our christmas lunch 2019, was enjoyable I must admit. Though being one of the company directors now its different to the good old days, now I have to stay reasonably sober & set an example of sorts!!

We've noticed on the staff appraisals we're doing at the moment that on their written self assessments under the 'what can we do to improve the workplace ' section most are encouraging a bigger social scene which I suspect is being driven by the fact we've all been restricted for 2 years or so.

I have a feeling we could see a bumper christmas build up this year in terms of socializing & social events.

I'm a bit like you @TRS30 & @antimatterx, I dread work social events. I worked in one company for 10 years & never once went to a Christmas Party - sacrilege around these parts I know! That said, the company I work for now never really did a lot of social events TG. There tends to be one big Christmas Party (usually in January) where they rent out a very nice hotel & we all go and have a nice meal and stay over. And I actually really enjoy that. We've been acquired by another company though so this week's event is to meet the corresponding team from the new parent company - I understood that attendance was non-optional 😕

Just beat me to it... "attendance not optional" theres 3 words to put me off straight away....

BTW, is it just me or does there appear to be a bit more life in here the last few days?

It's probably the turn in the weather - at least here in the northwest it has not been good the last few days - we even lit the fire for a while yesterday. In JUNE!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Noticed that as well. Three/four bold threads in the morning last few days instead of the usual one or 2 max for last few weeks.

    100% increase in traffic 😂

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

I think it's the fact that the weather thinks Christmas is coming! 😑😂

TBF, the weather is disappointing. I've been off work the last 4 weeks and had visions of spending lots of my time in the garden but have mostly been holed up in the house. At the moment it's actually cold, it could be March.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,438 ✭✭✭Aisling(",)

The weathers hugely picked up in my neck of the woods.

I've very handily have my Dad over doing some carpentry bits for me in the garden today and I'm worried I'll make the man get sunstroke. It's gloriously sunny and fierce warm!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Has picked up a bit here, sun finally came out and seems a bit warmer. I wouldn't be getting carried away as still breezy and some clouds around!

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Very overcast, muggy and humid here in Dublin city right now. Looks like the weather is trying to break!

I had 3 out of 4 lovely days over my extended bank holiday weekend though, so can't complain... much. 😂

Lovely sunny day here in the south east, busy in work, still have the cough though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭Smell the glove

Have one the last two weeks been to the doctor etc it's getting better but this dose is hard to shake. Probably because the immune systems are down from all the lockdowns and stuff the last few years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

    Morning all

Finally a more summery start here, sunny and warm.

    Happy hump day :)

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Yes, very warm and sunny start to the day, not that I'll see any more of it unless I head out for a wander at lunchtime!

It doesn't look overly promising for the weekend- typical. 😆

    Morning all

    Summer is here!!

Suppose to get up to 25 degrees today. Just back from Lidl and bough a swimming pool (well a paddling pool really 😂)

I was in London the past 1.5 weeks and the weather was unreal, not that I saw daylight due to work.

I was hoping to do some very early Christmas shopping but didnt get a chance. Hope all is well in Christmas forum land.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Good to hear from you @Jude13. Been very quiet in here so you haven't been missing much. I think we are in our summer lull before things pick back up again come Sept.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,438 ✭✭✭Aisling(",)

I'm off to London next week and there's a heat wave expected and the biggest rail and underground strike since 1989 on 3 of the days. It's panic stations trying to find ways to get to different things we've booked.

We'll be doing a lot of walking now and I do not do well in the heat. Stressing a bit!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,239 ✭✭✭jellybear

Afternoon all! Been super busy with our little man...moving him to his big boy room...naíonra induction day and managed a night away recently which was lovely. Getting ready for our baby's arrival in the next few weeks so been nesting away...my poor husband is shattered 🤣 Hope everyone here is doing well! @Aisling(",) I'm the exact same in the heat...was in London twice during very warm weather and it's not pleasant at all!! Plenty of water and ice creams 🙂🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,922 ✭✭✭Cork Lass

I'm the same - I hate when it's too hot. I'd suggest popping into the occasional air conditioned store for a quick cool down and bring plenty water. Heading to London on 19th July for 2 days so hoping the heatwave and strikes will be over by then.

I'll end up being the most hydrated woman in Britain with the amount of water I'll be drinking!

Booked a spot on a bus to the Harry Potter studio tour. Instead of 35 minutes on a train and 15 minutes on the shuttle bus it's going to be 2 hours each way and it's an hours walk from the stuff we're doing that morning and then back to the hotel. If nothing else I'll get my steps up. I support the unions but do wish it was any other week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

@jellybear exciting times! I remember the last couple of weeks before each Elf arrived, busy, excited, nervous anticipation!

@Aisling(",) as you said, lots of fluids (of the non-alcoholic variety 😂) and regular breaks in the shade and you'll be grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,922 ✭✭✭Cork Lass

Looking forward to hearing about the Harry Potter tour - my daughters are supposed to be going sometime later this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,577 ✭✭✭✭DvB

On site earlier today in Kilkenny, (very cloudy but warm down there for all you weather aficionados 😉) and the contractors had a christmas tree up (albeit wrapped in shrinkwrap to hold everything together) which made me do a double take!!

We had a large storage are on the top floor of our building and we used to store our work Christmas tree up there - fully decorated, just covered with plastic sheets. We did some renovations a few years ago and we got rid of the tree at the time as it was a bit the worse for wear. We haven't put one up for the last couple of years because of Covid and need a new one at this stage.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Oh no! What a pain, although I'm jealous as I haven't been to London before Covid. I'm dying to see Big Ben all spruced up and love watching Tower Bridge lift for passing boats.

Will the hop on hop off sightseeing buses be striking too? 😐

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

Good luck with the impending arrival, @jellybear - exciting times ahead! Have you found out if you're having a boy or a girl, or will it be a surprise? 🙂

That's gas about the tree, @DvB!! It's a good idea though, as @Cork Lass has said, if a workplace has the space. I'd do that at home only for the tree wouldn't fit up the attic hatch! 😂 Hopefully you will get a nice new work tree this year. 🎄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,239 ✭✭✭jellybear

@Posy thanks so much! Keeping it a surprise, which is so tough but I just loved that big surprise on our last one so we said we'd wait 😀 We have one boy's and one girl's name picked so we're good either way 🤣 Have about 6/7 weeks left so need to get my skates on with packing my hospital bag etc! My sister actually bought baby a Christmas onesie and I thought of this forum when she gave it to me 😆

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

    Aaaah that's so cute! 😍

I had the same issue, there was a one day strike last week when I arrived. The uber Q was massive. Jealous about the Harry Potter tour!! I am was suit and tie but am a bit more used to the heat, back in the 40's here.

Congratulations jelly bear!!! Our youngest is going in to big school from KG in September and I am a little heart broken that she's growing up this fast.

I think the tour busses are all private companies so they should be fine!

I did the tour about 8 years ago and it is honestly magical. The sets are fantastic, so many costumes and props and you can buy butterbeer if you want. It's definitely worth the money for any fan. My boyfriend hasn't been and I know there's been huge additions since I've been so we're very excited.Being able to walk through Diagon Alley or Gringotts is just amazing.

    Afternoon all

    Happy Friday.

Was lovely and warm earlier however wind has picked up and temperature has dropped! Talk of rain on the way as well :(

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 27,663 Mod ✭✭✭✭Posy

It's looking ominous and drizzly now... I'm hoping it holds off until I get home!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend and the weather is alright wherever you are. Just heading off now to give my Dad some help with his turf on the bog.

He's making good recovery from prostate cancer and he's getting on a bit now so my brother and sister and some of our kids get together and sort out the turf for him.

If any of you here have done days on the bog, you'll know it's character building stuff 😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,865 ✭✭✭TRS30

Fair play BK5, I’m sure he appreciates all the help.

I was round cutting one of the hedges in my folks house with Elf1 helping. It’s 140 foot long and over 6 foot high so my Dad isn’t able to do it anymore.

Elf1 got €5 for her holidays was so delighted 😁

We did the Harry Potter tour a few years ago in 34 degrees. Got butter beer ice cream and drank it 😂

I'm currently sitting in a campsite in cork where my cub scout group are in a national challenge. Leaders left on our own for 6 hours. I haven't had that much freedom in a long time. Sitting in peace in front of a camp fire.
