Nobody that endorses or makes a defence of a regime that murders journalists as a matter of routine has a standing to talk about freedom of speech.

Putinists and those who give them comfort can all go die in a ditch in Donbas to be eaten by crows.

They make a mockery of our liberties and try to use our own freedoms to do so. Sh*tbag trolls to a man.

“How that [ND: Russian] constitution is circumvented” is completely germane to Russia’s wars of aggression, and to the topic of this thread.

You’re hardly going to gain debating engagement from others if making a semantic point, not only futile but utterly redundant in the context of both reality and this serious political thread, is “all you care about”.

Because that shows you to be either petty or disingenuous, and so in neither case worth engaging with.

100% agreed. I'm done with that subject. Apologies. I got drawn into it.

    Precisely Yurt.

What is freedom and what is licence.

"Freedom is not license" means that just because we have freedom does not mean that we can do whatever we want whenever we want. Human freedom is limited. When people do whatever they want by disregarding God's law, their own good, or the rights of others, evil results.

The above is a quote but the ethics is the same. If you value freedom of expression you have a duty to protect it.

That duty is to respect and value truth, if you are a lazy repeater of lies then expect to be called a liar. If you don't, the ethically there is no issue with censoring liars or fools because the harm they do can result in things like homophobia to the criminalisation certain sexual partnerships, or lies about denazifing a country to illegal invasion and eventually the rape of babies or ethnic cleansing.

Jeysus, best of luck finding any democracy index that finds Russia to fall within working democracy levels. Just about anywhere you look you'll find it referred to as authoritarian, or an autocracy. Which, of course it is. Generally, regardless if you have show elections or not, if you're in a country where stating an opinion that is contrary to the state's will land you in jail, you're not in a democracy.

I'm sure if you look up the USSR constitution under Stalin it proclaimed all sorts of liberal freedoms, and maybe even North Korea's does the same. But these countries and many other authoritarian and totalitarian hell-holes may have democratic and liberal forms but these forms belie reality. Talk about the tribute that vice pays to virtue.

I'm sure Mr Navalny could enlighten you on the difference between what is proclaimed in a constitution and what things are like in reality.

What are you going on about Rebel , is it not written into the Russian constitution that the government there is a democracy !,,,,,,,,,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. As they say ‘ if you have a reputation for getting up early , you can stay in bed all day

To paraphrase Darth Putin, if Russia has denied it it must be true.

What was the lie about the Moskva? It 'caught fire' accidentally (readers we did not intend to be struck by missile therefore it happened accidentally), then sank in a storm (readers there was no storm).

Their war on Ukraine also represents a war on truth.

The only saving grace has been that, just like their failures on the military front, their propaganda lies are so obvious, inept, unbelievably and laughably untrue.

I mean, I could call myself the world's strongest man.

By the logic of some, because that is my description, it's automatically true.

    Hear hear! ✅👍🏻

I said it many times. Then I made a strong post and was banned for 2 days instead. While trolls and propagandists are laughing and keep operating. Been told "rules apply for everyone" - no they don't if you're at war and you try to be "nice" and "neutral" to your adversary!

We're at war lads. The whole Europe is at war with Russia. Has been for a decade but now it's in the hot phase including full-blown disinformation war which seeks to disrupt, destabilise and destroy our democratic order and way of life.

The Kremlin trolls, useful idiots and KGB agents engaged in this disinformation war abuse our weaknesses, abuse our freedom of speech and leverage it to destroy the very freedoms and freedom of speech!

Any sort of conflict or crisis is a battleground and opportunity for Kremlin to wage this disinformation war. But this time with Ukraine, this is the finale, this is the conclusion as Russian mafia state existence is at stake, they are throwing everything in into it. And we can see this even here. This is the ultimate battle.

One strange "Liberal" party there, with symbol of some sort of bird of prey stooping over several countries, that if I'm not mistaken in my geography, are in fact "Not Russia"! Not fash-y at all - no sir!

But but but they call themselves Liberal and Democratic so they must be ... yep, if you believe that you'll believe anything. And they frequently do.

Well, I see Russia are now accusing Ukraine of hitting an oil refinery within its borders (somewhere around Rostov, close to the border), via a drone strike. No independent verification yet (if there'll be any allowed mind you), but presumably this is a pretext to soemthing "retaliatory" in the future. Assuming it wasn't a genuine mistake by the drone pilots - cos I'd be confident there are no orders from Ukraine to hit targets in Russia.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,036 ✭✭✭timmyntc

If it turns out to be those kamikaze switchblade drones provided by the US, it could cause an escalation of sorts - Russia would hope that this will force US to cut back on supplies to Ukraine. The MLRS were contingent on them not being used to attack Russian soil, so presumably drones supplies would be with the same caveats.

Does Ukraine not get their drones from Turkey?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,532 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

An oil refinery in Rostov may well be considered a legitimate target by Ukraine. They can say they hit a Russian military target (and it's beyond arrogant for the regime to complain - they've been firing cruise missiles at Lviv, a city a long way away from Luhansk and Donetsk).

    Mod note:

By all means feel free to demonstrate how another poster is wrong with reliable sources and reasoned arguments.

But in a discussion forum people do not need to have personal and direct knowledge to discuss issues.

And if you are unable to support your views fair enough, but dont say other posters dont have a clue without any substance to back it up!

No you dont have to look at the TV at all.

You open boards.ie, go to the Politics forum, open the Ukraine thread, find the bots' posts, and then think the exact opposite of their statements - that's the truth. They always spread lies, just reverse it and you get the truth....

Mixed news today. Mostly good news, but Ukrainian army facing a setback in Lysychansk.

    Key Takeaways

The Kremlin recently replaced the commander of the Russian Airborne (VDV) forces and may have fired the commander of the Southern Military District and appointed a new overall commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, indicating ongoing dysfunction in the Kremlin’s conduct of the war.

Russian forces conducted several successful advances in settlements southeast of Severodonetsk on June 21 and may be able to threaten Lysychansk in the coming days while avoiding a difficult opposed crossing of the Siverskyi Donets River.

Russian forces continued to launch assaults on settlements along the T1302 Lysychansk-Bakhmut highway to interdict Ukrainian ground lines of communications (GLOCs).

Russian operations along the Izyum-Slovyansk axis are increasingly stalled as Russian forces prioritize operations around Severodonetsk.

Russian forces likely recaptured the eastern bank of the Inhulets River from the Ukrainian bridgehead situated near the Kherson-Mykolaiv Oblast border.

Ukrainian forces reportedly struck Russian positions on Snake Island in the Black Sea, likely to destroy Russian fortifications and equipment on the island, but ISW cannot confirm competing Ukrainian and Russian claims of the results of the attack.

Russian occupation authorities are continuing to face challenges recruiting local collaborators and are likely relying on Russian government personnel to consolidate their societal control of occupied Ukrainian territories.

    Not looking good here:

Minimum progress here and Russians are digging themselves down to defensive positions:

Now this one is basically a behaviour of an occupation force (not "liberation force"):

Russian occupation authorities are continuing to face challenges recruiting local collaborators and are likely relying on Russian government personnel to consolidate their societal control. Enerhodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov noted that many young people are fleeing Enerhodar and are refusing to cooperate with Russian occupation forces. Orlov reported that Russian forces have mistreated the remaining employees of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant who stayed back in the city to minimize the risks of a nuclear emergency. Ukrainian Telegram channel MariupolNow noted the arrival of a large convoy of Russian cars and busses near Mariupol, possibly carrying Russian non-military personnel. Russian occupation authorities installed Russian television networks in Kherson Oblast and are continuing to restore railways in Mariupol despite being unable to consolidate societal control in newly occupied territories.
