No posts in over 10 hours. According to logic from a previous poster - the war must be over

I think the West are doing a 'boiling frog' with Russia... ratcheting up more advanced military support bit by bit. While they were wary of providing such weapons in the heat of the early days of battle... they are slowly (possibly too slowly, but the EU is VERY conservative) but surely providing the good stuff.

I'd not be betting on Russia getting their heretofore unannounced special operations war goals.

I hope that's the case, just wish thru would get the finger out and supply quicker.

We should defend our way of life to an extent that any attempt on it is crushed, so that any adversary will never make such an attempt in the future.

The Russians have slowly been getting their sh1t together in some regards.

Reinforced Russian air-defense systems in eastern Ukraine are increasingly limiting the effectiveness of Ukrainian drones, undermining a key Ukrainian capability in the war. Foreign Policy’s Jack Detsch quoted several anonymous Ukrainian officials and military personnel that Ukrainian forces have largely halted the use of Turkish Bayraktar drones, which were used to great effect earlier in the war, due to improvements in Russian air-defense capabilities.

Ukrainian officials are reportedly increasingly concerned that US-provided Gray Eagle strike drones will also be shot down by reinforced Russian air defense over the Donbas.[2] Ukrainian forces have reportedly scaled back air operations to 20 to 30 sorties per day and are facing a deficit of available aircraft for active pilots. Russian forces are likely prioritizing deploying air defenses to eastern Ukraine to nullify Ukrainian operations and to protect the artillery systems Russian forces are reliant on to make advances. However, the Ukrainian air force and armed drones remain active elsewhere, inflicting several successful strikes on targets in Kherson Oblast in the last week.

Also in more negative news it looks like Ukraine lost their position on the Eastern Bank of the Inhulets River too. Near Davydiv Brid.

Is that the same Trump that was impeached for blackmailing Ukraine and openly performed fellatio on Putin at every opportunity he got?

Yep, that Orange prick is one of the many reasons we are where are today.

Without the equipment provided by London and Washington the Ukraine would already be in military collapse.

The EU countries have sent a small portion of the overall.

Digging in isn't getting their sh1t together, it's practically giving up and relying on the waiting game. Who can hold out the longest?

Historically stoic Russians, but city (those that count) Russians used to more Western lifestyles of late seeing such lifestyles slowly ebb away Vs Historically stoic Ukrainians fighting for their very existence supported by the West (top level - Love Island fans notwithstanding). My Money would sill be on Ukraine.

I said in some regards. They're not getting routed from positions like had been in the earlier days. The war has had distinct phases and failing less miserably than they had been is still getting their sh1t together in some regards.

The selling out of Europe by Merkel was so egregious, so blatant that even he had to call it out, the same with the underfunding of defense in Europe because many felt America paid the bill.

Successive US Presidents called out these issues.

Now Germany is going to reap Merkel's harvest and in winter all of Europe will.

Her hope, and her master's hope is that as winter comes in the severity of the economic crisis will cause sanctions to collapse.

She may well succeed in that.

Merkel gets good press in Ireland. There is a distorted view here about her. It's not inconceivable that she was personally compromised by Russia, considering the previous chancellor was clearly personally compromised.

Schroeder has been the Greatest security threat to Europe since the cold war. A man that had access to the state secrets of Germany and high level intel on NATO or the EU, and he defected to Russia.

Schroeder could have Germany as a whole compromised through blackmail.

If Obama or Trump, Blair or Cameron, defected to Russia. They'd be sending their 007 to Russia to take them out. Absolutely no question about it. Germany just diddered and pretended it wasn't a problem. Why?

Trump was famous for reading something out that was written for him and then in the next sentence going off script and completely contradicting himself, primarily because he is a fúcking idiot.

Either way he was impeached for withholding aid to Ukraine and blackmailing it's president while heaping praise on the Putin.

He is very much part of the reason we are we are.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,810 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

He wanted European countries to ramp up military spending.

The Green light for Putin was the non reaction from Western Govts after Crimea and Donbass in 2014.

Merkel was ordered to accelerate the winding down of non gas German energy sources after that and she did more than comply.

A man she is on record in 2014 as describing as determined to destroy Europe.

This was in motion years before Trump.

The whole point of the video is not Trump but the fact that the Germans were laughing at what he was saying.

I imagine they were laughing at irony of the man saying it.

Point to note in regards to Merkel, her grip on power had been eroding for 10 years by Germain business and hardliners in her own back yard meaning she was strong-armed into dealing with Russia. I recall seeing many photos of her looking far from happy whenever she is seen with Putin. This would be 10 years back now so I am not going to spend an hour looking through internet-land for such photos. Politics is ofter a crap job that someone has to do.

well here is one after all...

Ukrainian military destroyed Pantsyr-S1 SAM at Zmiiny island- Snakes

    Google translates...

OK "Pivden" informs about what our military officers have received on the anti-aircraft missile-harmonic complex "Pantsir-S1".

The head of the exploration Budanov confirmed that anti-aircraft guns and rocket artillery installations were deployed on the island. Vin it seems that according to the objects, fire will be fired, until the island will not be fired

Bit of a leap from that to what Hob posted... maybe I'm missing something.

Now that Russia has beefed up their air defences in the Donbas and drones have a much shorter life expectancy, will this impact the effectiveness of the HIMARs when (end of month) they arrive on the frontline? How does HIMARs do target acquisition and counter artillery fire? If the US are providing intel, are they dependent on drones or do they have round the clock satellite coverage for the Donbas?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,017 ✭✭✭RGARDINR

Just on sky news. A little while ago. Seems both sides are using inexperienced soldiers/people trained. More we were hearing it in regards to Russian military but seems Ukraine are doing the same on the front lines as well.

I can totally believe that Schroeder was compromised and may even have been on the Kremlin payroll, but Merkel was almost certainly doing what she thought was best for the country and for Europe. She was committed to peace and cooperation and human rights for all.

Saying that she was a facilitator for Putin's aggressive tendencies is a bit harsh. She didn't turn him into a power mad megalomaniac or modern day imperialist, he did all of that off his own bat.

It's almost like fighting a war against the Russians is a tough thing.

OF COURSE it is. The russians, want you and your kids dead or deported Mrs so they can have loyal Russians managing such fertile soil. It's not as if Zelensky may have a choice if he wants to avoid the Ukrainian populace (those left alive/not deported) saluting the USSR flag. Heartbreaking stuff, but her ire is aimed at the wrong people.

Seems there could be a massive Ukrainian assault ongoing in the east aimed at liberating Kherson at the moment. Taking advantage of the troops concentrated in the east and the end of conscript contracts on 26th. There's a media black out on everything from the east front.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭nigeldaniel

Up dated story. Germany is late to the job but now the gas is been switched off they have no more excuses to drag their feet. I expect to see a considerable increase in military hardware being sent to the Ukraine very soon.

What is South Korea doing to help Ukraine, they have a massive army, with so much top gear

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,743 ✭✭✭zv2

Why didn't they put it up there alongside Kyiv where they'd have a better chance of hiding it?

Both sides are depending on conscriptions to fill the ranks, and that means it will be alot of inexperienced soldiers fighting, regardless

But when thats said,it doesnt matter how experienced you are when facing an artillery barrage or being bombed

The difference between Russia and Ukraine is that Russia keeps their mouths shut about peoples opinion and Ukraine doesnt.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,278 ✭✭✭thomil

The other difference is that Ukraine at least tries to cycle its units on the front line, rather than having the same troops in the trenches all the time, something that will greatly help with knowledge transfer between "veterans" and new recruits coming out of training. Granted, that's still not a substitute for combat experience or months-long specialist training, and there are areas of the front where cycling out units will be challenging to say the least. But it doesn't hurt and in the long run, might be a deciding factor. Just ask the Kido Butai.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Quietly backfilling Canadian arms exports to Ukraine at a deep discount apparently.

Mercantilist-first foreign policy and try to keep their head below the parapet on big-ticket geopolitical bunfights.

But yes, they could stand to be a bit more overt in their support given they are on Russia's sh*tlist, their intimate security arrangement with the US and their corporations are persona-non-grata now anyway.
