A very conservative safe option. For whatever reason the county board want to keep the current management team in place, despite the fact that some fresh voices and ideas are badly needed. Kieran Kingston was manager in 2016 and 2017, he served as a selector under JBM as well. He has been a pretty consistent presence, throughout this decade of chaos and beyond.

No progress will be made under kingston next year, a real poor decision.

Maybe they had someone in mind but they weren't available for another 12 months.

  • Registered Users Posts: 394 ✭✭rebelyell99

Very disappointing if kingston decides to stay on ,he has had long enough in the role and has shown tactically he isn't up to it .There are some decent young players coming through but we will win nothing with kingston it's time for a new voice and fresh ideas .

I would love for Liam sheedy to be offered the job but I supose the cork County board would be too proud to go outside the County better off to settle for mediocrity and go another 20 years without an all ireland.

    shambles of a set up.

This is the probable assumption really - That they didn’t have anyone lined up

Which in itself is poor planning, given his contract was coming to an end anyway

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

If he picks someone like Pat Ryan or Ben O'Connor as a selector, then it would make this news a bit more palatable imo. That of course is presuming that he accepts the county boards offer.

We have a lot of options within the county all better than Kingston.

Frank has been gone nearly four years now, but i still get the impression that the county board, is a total and utter circus!

Personally I think Pat Ryan or Ben O'Connor would be mad to go in as a selector. The stock of the current backroom team has all dropped being involved with the Kingston regime

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

In 2016 we exited the championship to an ordinary enough Wexford team. In 2017 we imploded in Croke Park against Waterford, after being ahead by two points with about less than fifteen minutes left. We went out to Tipp in 2020 despite being in a position to win that game. We got to an all Ireland final last year, but we nearly blew a six point lead against Clare, we then got a handy draw in Dublin, and to be fair that was a brilliant win against Kilkenny in the semi final. In the all Ireland final Limerick were the better team anyway, but the tactics or lack off was pathetic.

Limerick forwards were given acres of space and they had a field day. The game was over at half time. And of course last Saturday we got knocked out by Galway, despite them not having to play that well to beat us. We had Hoggie and Alan Cadogan on the bench against Galway, for that entire first half despite the forward line malfunctioning. Yet the county board are offering Kieran Kingston a one years extension. Why's that? He's hardly going to become the second coming of Father Bertie Troy or Brian Cody at this stage.

An absolute nonsense article by Michael Moynihan in the Examiner, saying why wouldn't Cork offer an experienced manager an extension to his term of office? Yeah Kieran Kingston has a lot of experience of the wrong kind unfortunately. As i said already, i don't see Kieran Kingston making this transformation into an elite manager at this stage. Moynihan to be fair has wrote plenty of good stuff over the years though. I suppose some of the journalists in the Examiner and Echo, are trying to brainwash the Cork public into seeing sense in this decision.

All we hear about Kingston is he's a sound guy and he puts his heart and soul into cork hurling ,if he cares that much about cork hurling he will walk and take Mulcahy, Furlong and Sully with him. This group of players may not be good enough to win an all ireland but if we had a competent management we wouldn't be losing to an average galway team or be losing at halftime to antrim.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Amprodude

I can't support Cork hurling next year if Kingston is still in charge. He has had two terms. He's not good enough, too slow, too tactically inept, he's a disaster and Cork will never win anything if he's there next year again. Hes asleep at the wheel. Waste of time and effort. We don't want him in Cork, time to get out Kingston before you ruin your legacy. Thanks for trying but it's away out of your league.

Kingston being there or not certainly wouldn't make a blind bit of differnece to me in my support of Cork hurling.

  • Registered Users Posts: 394 ✭✭rebelyell99

If kingston is there next season I reckon you could see corks support drop , I mean if the county board arnt willing to be serious about appointing a good management why should supporters pay hard earned money to watch a team that's destined to fail again .

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

Another good article by Tony Considine here. He's dead right Cork have no divine right or entitlement to all Irelands, and a lack of on field leadership is a serious issue. For all the mistakes management made like leaving Hoggie on the bench, Cork still could have won that game against Galway in the second half, but they didn't win it. Of course you need management that can deploy the right tactics, and change the tactics and make the correct substitutions when necessary, but it's up to the players to make the correct decisions on the field as well. On too many occasions over the last ten years and beyond, Cork have constantly come up short there.

Yeah you will be watching the same sort of hurling since 2016 so but if that what keeps you happy well then that's fine too.

I won't be going to any more of Cork hurling games while Kingston and co remain in charge. That's how I feel about it. He's not the right man in charge but the county board never fail to amaze me none of them involved have a clue.

I won't spit my dummy out and not support the team, no matter who the manager is - although Davy Fitz getting it could challenge that theory in fairness.

You chose not to, that's your choice fella.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Amprodude

I will spit my dummy out. I have seen enough of this for years now with Kingston. He isn't going to do it with Cork. Getting out of Munster next year will be a challenge now.

Cork never get rid of mangers in time. Denis Ring was left manager of the Cork u20 for years and years and failure all the way. He nearly destroyed the u20 division he brought so much failure to Cork. I respect a guy trying to go in and do his best but when it's not working out call it a day. Kingston is nearly in the same bracket at this stage as Ring. When Cork got rid of Ring they won 2 All Irelands. But it will need more than a new manager for Cork to be at the top table. Alot of the players aren't good enough either let's be a bit realistic without mentioning any names.

Getting out of Munster is going to be a challenge no matter who is in charge.

Limerick will again be favourites for the All Ireland, let alone Munster.

Clare were in the Munster final this year and could very well get to the All Ireland final too.

Waterford and Tip will spend the winter hurting, so expect at least 1 of them to be back in the championship.

Cork have no God given right to win anything. I would prefer if he were gone, but I will of course still support the team if he is still there.

The thing is with Kieran he's an absolute gentleman, and a great representative and ambassador for Cork hurling. My issues with him are only in a sporting/performance sense. I just don't think he's up to the job of managing the Cork senior hurling team. To win all Irelands you need astute management, players with the right blend of skill and toughness, players who can make the correct decisions under pressure, and a panel with plenty of strength in depth. Cork just haven't had any of these things since the mid noughties.

I think we will. We certainly did the last time before the last 15 when we tired and they walked in a few goals.

I hope we can raise our game and go for it. Playing a team that won't put 15 players inside their own 45 will surely help too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 34,147 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

Kingston staying sets us back few years. Thankfully we have won so many all Irelands in past 15 years it's nice for everyone else to get a chance.

Thing is not sure who replaces him either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Amprodude

I highly doubt it but we will wait and see. False expectations. We will be beaten comfortably I can imagine.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,244 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Dreadful wides altogether. Can't win a game with shooting like that.

By your logic, There's noone up to the challenge In that case?

Dublin have the same amount of wides after 20 mins.

Cork doing well, wides apart and only 2 in it.

What? Cork need to take every opportunity they get. Let Dublin kick a load of wides if they want, Cork can't afford to do that.
