Small engine petrol first car

Looking for first car for my son. Insurance is pushing him to 1.0 to 1.2 litre petrol.

What are the 1.0 tsi engines like for reliability in the VW/Seat/Skoda family? We'd go 15-16k for something fresher but I'm concerned they wouldn't last for higher mileage beyond 100-150k km which wouldn't take long to reach if the one purchased had 40-50k already on clock.

Any other recommendations? Most manufacturers seem to have smaller engine turbo petrol at this point. Are they all a time bomb for big repair bills?

How much mileage is he planning on doing? It would take up to 10 years for most people to go from 50k to 150k.

If the car is regularly serviced it will continue past 250 km’s+. Cars don’t just self destruct after 100k km’s.

15-16k for a first car. He's going to bump it, I'd say your spending about 14k too much tbh. Old Yaris/Jazz will likely do the job if "slightly" boring

Would be a roughly 50km daily college commute to start with. Social purposes on top of that. I could see him hit 20k km per year approx.

Always liked the polo as they’re pretty safe. Can be problematic though. Fiesta and Clio good also.

Honda Jazz are good news but may be a bit OAP for him

If your worried about reliability of 1.0 litre engines then this Fiesta has the older more simplistic but less powerful 1.1 litre:
