Our most recent senior all Ireland win was in football. The hurlers are are in the middle of the longest senior all Ireland famine, in the history of Cork hurling. Cork football has never recovered from appointing Brian Cuthbert over John Cleary back in 2013. Cuthbert got rid of nearly all of the senior players in one go.

Failing to adapt to the modern times has a lot to do with it. Other counties upped their game in terms of preparation, but we still acted like it's 1978 or 1990 in Cork. The hurlers had to go on strike, to get a professional set up to win the 2004 and 2005 all Irelands, and the footballers had to do the same to win the 2010 all Ireland.

Four senior all Irelands in both codes over the past thirty two years, tells us all we need to know really. The decision to offer Kieran Kingston another term as manager of the hurlers, is enough to let me know that even with Frank gone, the county board is still a muppet show.

I’m just an ordinary supporter with no insight what’s going on at county board level, but something clearly isn’t working. I was in Croke Park in 2010 for the football final. Also at the 2005 hurling final. Can’t believe it’s so long ago. Youngsters now 12-16 who have never seen a (male) victory parade coming from the station in to town.

A few things. I’d never criticise any man or woman who dons a Cork jersey. They try their best and give a ferocious amount of time to the cause. I also don’t buy the narrative that we need someone from outside to manage the hurlers or footballers. We surely have talent within the county. John Kiely, Brian Cody, Jim Gavin, Jack O’Connor, Liam Sheedy: all successful with their native counties. Micky Harte. Even mercenaries like Davy Fitz only won an all Ireland with his own county (feck him anyway). I actually can’t think of any all Ireland winning team who were successful with an outside coach/manager.

So, surely someone here knows what’s wrong, cause it needs to be called out and fast. Some great posts seem to suggest certain things, but we are the biggest county in Ireland and we should be doing better.

Three points in the second half, and only the one point from play. As great a team as Dublin are, that's still an appalling statistic. We did stay up in division two, and we blooded a few players as well. So there is positives to take from the year. Hopefully we'll have a serious crack at winning promotion to division one next year.

Was at the game yesterday, enjoyable first half, just about stuck with them, even with kicking some bad wides, mainly from poor shot choices. Never got going in the second half, Dublin got a rake of frees which looked lie some tired tackling. We've a solid core that are capable of hanging with the big boys for 35-55 mns, but fitness and lelve of subs seems to be a big difference.

The kicking game we're going with is lovely to look at, and is looks great when it ends in scores, too many of yesterday ended up with poor shot choices, shots that players were off balanced and were never likely to hit the target. A better team resists that shot choice, resets and tries to work it into a better opportunity. That's the next step on this team's journey.

Big decision on the mangement front too, doesn't sound like Cuthbert will be back unfortunately

Between Dublin and Derry division two will be competitive enough next year. I'd be disappointed if we don't put in a serious challenge at winning promotion though.

I wish Keith Ricken all the best, and hopefully he makes a full recovery from whatever has forced him to step aside. We stayed up in division two and playing Dublin in Croke Park, will stand to this teams development. We have a long way to go before we win an all Ireland, but we did make some small positive steps towards that this year. I think so far John Cleary and co have done a decent enough job. I see them building towards something, unlike the hurlers who are on the road to nowhere with Kieran Kingston and his band of merry men.

Our hurlers could take a look at the Kerry footballers who are on course to win the All Ireland this year. Get a proper manager in there who is ruthless. If the Cork hurlers had a ruthless manager we might be better off. Kerry are going to win the All Ireland while O Connor is in charge that's a fact. He's a born winner.

Difference is Kerry has the players to win an All Ireland, Cork unfortunately has not

  • Registered Users Posts: 154 ✭✭magic17

If we're talking about the hurlers then I genuinely believe we have the players in Cork right now that can beat every team in the country at their best... except Limerick. The problem for me is the management. Between selecting the panel, training, selecting the team and on the line at games we are not performing as well as we can. In fact, I believe we are nowhere near the level we can reach.

Hopefully change is about to happen but it seems like we're getting another year of this failed setup again. If it's a stop gap for a year until the right people come in then fair enough. Something has to change soon though.

I think we potentially do, Cork did win an underage all Ireland double last year. Sure it may have been another hammering to Limerick in the semi final, but it's all about getting the most out of your resources. I feel with more tactically astute management, then Cork would have beaten what was on the day, a fairly mediocre enough Galway team.

Speaking of Kerry both themselves and Tyrone, invested serious money in a centre of excellence. We have nothing like that in Cork.

Are you saying that there's players in the county that are better than those picked? And if so, who?

Or are you saying the currnet players could be coached better?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,050 ✭✭✭Rosita

Funny to see him say the players shouldn't have a say in choosing the manager. Wasn't it one of the fundamentals of the very strongly supported strikers years ago that the players had such a say? If it was a good idea then why not now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,023 ✭✭✭lukin

I think too much value is being placed on the underage success Cork had last year. Tipperary won the U-20 All-Ireland in 2018 and 2019 and look at the mess they are in now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

We do have a base to work with there. How well they make the transition to senior level is another story obviously.

Fair decision by Kingston to step down

Was completely wrong of Cork board to offer him another year - likely showed they had no plans themselves for a successor

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,121 ✭✭✭zetecescort

Just like to thank Kingston for his service. I know its almost a cliché now but by all accounts an honest genuine man who no doubt gave his all through a number of stints as selector and manger

He did his best but it wasn't good enough. Needed a change fast. Hopefully the next man in looks after the interests of Cork hurling and not someone who is a yes man to the county board.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭Grats

I see no mention of Donal O'Grady's part in the management team now disbanded. Much was made of his addition to that management team but Kingston is taking all the flak. Had Cork done well O'Grady would be happy to take the plaudits I'm sure. He'll hardly put his name forward for manager.

Too true. As long as Cody is around DOG will skulk in the background.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Amprodude

He beat him 2004 well and should have beaten him and Kilkenny in 2003 too. Why would he skulk in the background? I don't want to see DOG there now because the game has moved on.

A great Cork hurling man is Kieran Kingston. We had an enjoyable Munster final win in 2017 under him, and last years run to the all Ireland final was very memorable. Of course he was a decent player for Cork as well. Thank you for your effort and service to Cork hurling Kieran.

It's great to see that some of the Kilkenny lads are still rattled by Donal O'Grady.😁

This year was a missed opportunity. Limerick aren't motoring as well as in previous years, so perhaps we could have rattled their cage in the semi final. Hopefully the board will pick the right man for the job now. As long as it's not Davy Fitz, then that's the main thing really!

Fair play to Kingston. He had the balls to walk away. He gave us some great days but just fell short of the promised land. No shame in it and he did his best but its the right call and we need get a man who will give us that edge now.
