I don't think 5 subs are really needed and that coaches may use them to add load to some positions rather than lower effort of the squad.

Some players may become 60min specialists. Hard to imagine coaches won't use the extra subs as part of their overall tactics. In an era where you can change half the team then players can be asked to do even more, wing backs for example can now be asked to cover even more ground and coach can swap both after an hour and still have 3 subs left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,079 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I think the majority of 4th & 5th subs from the big sides will actually be taking off the big players. Saving their energy for other games, after going 2-0 or 3-0 up. Man City & Liverpool are already winning 30 out of 38 games a season, using 3 subs.

That fabled 'bringing on 4 world class subs all at once when drawing at a bottom half club' is not really gonna happen that much in all reality. It's the main hypothetical argument to prevent 5 subs happening.

Well considering teams in Europe will be playing nearly every 3 days until the World Cup it will help.

will the 5 subs work similar to during covid? ie: 5 subs but only 3 opportunities to bring them on.

there are bigger fish to fry than 5 subs that all teams use to varying degrees:

time wasting - think the ball is in play for about 60 mins per game.

var - just be consistent. get rid of the clear and obvious criteria as it introduces too much subjectivity, and only serves to protect the ref/var.

cynical fouls - needs to be a yellow straight off the bat regardless of where on the pitch it is, or how long the game has been on. wouldnt mind seeing an accumulation rule on the cynical fouls. 1st gets a yellow, 2nd a yellow, 3rd a red. that way you stop the rotation of players 'taking turns'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

I believe you still only have the 3 opportunities to bring on subs plus half time.

Another one that was creeping in last season was lads taking a ball to the head/heading the ball and going down with a 'head injury'. That needs stamping out quickly as it could become a mess with players going down every time the ball touches their head. You claim a head injury and you're down the tunnel to be accessed by an independent doctor, no exceptions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,258 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

    100%. forgot about that one.

remember last season some player fucked up a headed clearance (dont remember game), and immediately hit the deck with a head injury. game stopped while the opposition was in a great position.

yer man was up shortly after, after feigning for a while.

if the ref stops the game due to a head injury, off you go (you can make a 'free' temporary sub) for at least 10 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,791 ✭✭✭✭JPA

The point about Klopp is that he frequently didn't use his 3 subs nevermind 5, especially in tight games.

It's for the games where they're 3 up on 60 minutes the 5 subs will actually be used.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Did he not use the third sub a lot of the time in case of an injury and have someone available to replace that injured person with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

Yo can’t punish people for going down with a head injury. The idea of it is that soccer was behind nearly every other sport and if managers have to bring a player off there will be pressure on the player to pick himself up and dust himself down, thus creating a dangerous situation for that player.

Just stop the clock at the 70 minute mark every time the ball goes out of play….

Oh, and goalkeepers…..6 second rule needs to be brought back in. I couldn’t care if they catch it, save it or what, you have 6 seconds to get it back into play. They catch a cross, then go to ground, stay there for 5-10 seconds, then carry it the edge of the area for another 10-15 seconds….needs stamping out.

Ah now come on you can't actually be arguing that the 2 extra plodders that Bournemouth or whoever could bring on would make more of a difference than the 2 extra world class players the likes of city liverpool chelsea etc could bring on? For example if it was Newcastle 0-0 liverpool with 15 to go Liverpool could still potentially bring on the likes of jota or firminio or Henderson etc Newcastle would be bringing on rubbish like Jacob Murphy or Manquillo there is no comparison.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭Fattybojangles

Ah come on the Bundesliga where the second placed teamed lost 2 legs to Rangers or LaLiga where Barcelona had an abysmal year the quality of the subs available to those teams is nowhere near the quality available to Chelsea Liverpool city etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Just waiting now for Newcastle to buy so many players they need those extra subs to keep everyone happy

Yes and he won't be complaining about the 5 subs then!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,419 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

Comparing leagues is to see the influence of the 5 subs in that league, not compare premier league sides to sides in other leagues like for like.

Within the context of their leagues Barcelona are much stronger than an Elche or Cadiz or Granada. Subs like Lenglet, Memphis, Dest, Ferran Torres, Eric Garcia are way ahead of what Elche have in their squad.

The reality for the likes of Leeds and Forest is that points against the top sides in the league will be rare regardless of subs and it is the teams much closer to them in the table they will need to be beating. As seen with Leeds last season as they were crippled with injuries more options to manahe their squad may actually help them with the very busy schedule either side of the world cup.

Edit: if we were comparing teams across leagues a Leeds or Bournemouth will routinely spend amounts far in excess of what a Granada or Osasuna can so the gaps within the leages for the haves and have nots are relatively comparable.

Lads like Jota, Bobby or Hendo are gonna be in your first 3 coming on. And ultimately, if your best guys weren't able to break down a stoic team, what makes you think the 4th and 5th choice backups will? Nah, consistently the reason the poorer teams fall away at the end of games is pure exhaustion. We see it week in week out. This at least let's them get a couple extra bodies in that are fit and firing.

And sure even beyond that - you keep talking about this as some construct to help the big teams. They're already putting those teams away no bother, routinely breaking the 90 point barrier right now anyway, so to be honest any change (especially one that has been proven right across Europe to not have you effect you seem to think it will), is worth a try. I've a feeling we'll see more sides manage to hang on for a draw against the big guns as a result anyway.

Maybe I will maybe I won't but it is nice to see you acknowledge that it benefits those teams with bigger/better squads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

Now that the embarrassing Newcastle third jersey has actually been acknowledged as being a thing, here's hoping that

    a) Newcastle have enough backbone to minimise the amount of times they have to wear it and

    b) Newcastle fans have enough cop-on not to buy the bloody thing.

Really don't want to see that in the Premier League this coming season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

You mean the Saudi Arabia kit not the Newcastle one don't you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,791 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

I never acknowledged anything, I was just merely pointing out that football fans notoriously change their opinions when it involves their own clubs!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭Fattybojangles

They sure do which probably goes some way to explain why all Liverpool fans on here are so in favour of the 5 subs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,791 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Are Liverpool fans the only fans in favour of it and have they been against it in the past and suddenly changed opinion on it? The point I was making that football fans will be against anything until it suits them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

As a Liverpool fan, I’m not in favour of it. I wasn’t in favour of allowing 5 subs on the bench either as it gave big clubs the chance to stockpile the best players by keeping them involved in match day squads. This 5 subs thing is the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

A major benefit of the expansion of the number of match day squad players allowed and this new 5 subs rule is it gives young homegrown players a taste of the big time and an opportunity to get a little game time at the top level. And that can only be a good thing for all clubs. Klopp has given a lot of homegrown players that opportunity in cup and league games over the past 5 years.

    Salah signs new contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

To be honest I'm not bothered about it at all... I wanted it for the season before last as a really obvious way of combatting the shrunken season, and I think it makes sense for this coming season for the same reason - 2 seasons that cram the same number of games into far fewer weeks.

But under normal circumstances - the status quo clearly helps Liverpool. Been hitting 90+ points in 3 of the last 4 years, so it's way more likely that any change will disrupt that than help it (as the evidence all across Europe has shown already). In those many, many games 'Pool have pulled a win out of the bag in the last 5 or 10 minutes, I'd much rather not see 2 pairs of fresh opposition legs coming on to shore things up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 810 ✭✭✭augustus gloop

That Newcastle 3rd kit is a windup is it? That’s disgusting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

Not really, what else would you expect? It’s blatant Sportswashing so no point in being subtle!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,079 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Kevin De Buryne & Virgil Van Dijk together on holidays in Ibiza. They've previously mentioned that they are friends, as their kids go to school together and live near each other.

The modern footballer is much different to the ones in the late 90s / early 00s. And to be honest I think I prefer it. They are normal humans too.

Wonder if Ronaldo gave Ten Haag the week to see what he though of him and then came to the conclusion that Ten Haag wasn’t the answer either?

I'd say Ten Hag doesn't want Ronaldo at all and this leaking from Ronaldo is him trying to save face.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,208 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cookiemunster

Ten Hag has yet to speak to Ronaldo. He didn't speak to any player before starting preseason last Monday and will only meet the internationals for the first time today. So I highly doubt it's anything to do with ten Hag. It's simply Ronaldo being Ronaldo and wanting to be at a CL club with a chance of winning silverware. His ego couldn't take playing in the EL.

Hi guys. Apologies in advance if this question is not allowed, or if I am asking it in the wrong thread (its my first time in this private group). Does anyone have good contacts for Man Utd tickets? Preferably Old Trafford tickets, but not against attending a few away matches too.

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

Ronaldo a no-show today. This is good for Utd, even if they won’t admit it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,114 ✭✭✭El Gato De Negocios

100%, his ship has sailed and he is not the future of the club. Thank you and good night tbh.

Philips supposedly getting 200K a week at City - he's a good player, but seriously , its probably nothing to City as they go about buying another league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,976 ✭✭✭doc_17

    200k a week for 6 years…..over £60m in wages.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭Brendan Flowers

Where are you seeing that he's getting 200K per week? I just did a quick search and all I'm seeing is 150K. But even at that, none of the articles I saw are sources I'd trust.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,435 ✭✭✭Scoundrel

I've not seen it reported as being that high but even if it was its nowhere near as ludicrous as Man Utd giving Sancho 350k a week.

    . . . . . as every ex-professional says, repeatedly "Its only a short career"

How would Sancho survive if he broke his leg now and had to live off that 18,000,000 for the rest of his life?

I've seen 4 different names from a cursory search so I still haven't a scooby. 😅 Some absolute trolls throwing out names that don't quite match up with "internationally famous footballer" or the age.

Ronaldos place on the summer tour now in question. The club don't know when he'll be back.

Terrible behaviour from the "ultimate pro" I can't help but snigger at all the grown men who went out and got Ronaldo 7 Jerseys last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,378 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Did you snigger at all the Newcastle fans wearing tea towels on their heads last year when the takeover completed?
