I'm always intrigued by unclaimed large prizes, where are these mystery bond holders.

Bond P137675 purchased in Cork in November 1975, won in December 1991, now worth €19,046.07 with interest 31 years unclaimed.

Bond DB539878 purchased in Limerick in May 2001, won €20,000 in October 2004 18 years unclaimed.

Bond R982310 purchased in Dublin in December 1977, won in September 1996, now worth €19,046.07, 26 years unclaimed, these bond holders could be out there struggling in today's cost of living crisis and a small nest egg unclaimed or they are unware of, well I can tell you one thing, it wouldn't be me, that's for sure.

This is what the Annual Report says:

"At the end of 2021, the number of unclaimed prizes, built up since the launch of the product in 1957, amounted to €3.2 million. Unclaimed prizes are defined as not claimed after six months. It should be noted that we communicate with every prize winner at the address we have for the customer. Unclaimed prizes primarily arise due to customers not notifying us of their change of address. We encourage customers to notify us of any changes as early as possible after the change. The amount outstanding in these prizes is a very small part of the value of prizes awarded over the years since the incorporation of the Prize Bond Scheme. All prizes are listed on the State Savings website, www. StateSavings.ie. It is important to remember that prizes are held indefinitely until claimed by a bond holder."

Not mentioned there, but a lot of that €3.2 million is cheques which were never cashed, but which still have to be counted in the liabilities. The rest would be letters with prizes returned undelivered. No more cheques now, but no doubt many of the prizes paid into bank accounts will be abandoned there in Dormant Accounts. Probably billions of Euro in those accounts which will never be claimed.

I wouldn't worry too much about the cost of living crisis for those sort of people. Even something as simple as claiming a Lottery prize is too much bother for some of them.

    "Thu May 12 2022 - 18:21

Over €17 million in unclaimed prizes was last year transferred to the operator of the National Lottery, Premier Lotteries Ireland (PLI).

The €17.054 million in unclaimed prizes for 2021 brings to €124 million in unclaimed lottery prizes since 2015 that has been transferred to PLI.

The €17 million total for 2021 is on a par with the €17 million that went unclaimed in 2020.

Some €19 million was unclaimed in both 2018 and 2019."

I'd bet a good chunk of them are dead!

My grandad (who died more than 40 years ago, won €50 recently). We have no bond, no nothing - I just happen to have the same name and reside in the same locality so received his post.

So how did the situation play out, who got the €50euro, doesn't bear thinking about if it was a jackpot prize.

Anyway nothing for me today, my 40k batch which I cashed in after last weeks big draw appear in my bank account this morning, I still have 10k 20k 30k batches total 60k which I'II leave in. total wins in 2022 €150euro.

They don't pay out €50 any more, do they? Doesn't it have to be lodged directly/taken as new bond?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,710 ✭✭✭✭Jamie2k9

I have 18k in 10 months and won nothing as of today. I only put it in to move it from a bank but a little disappointed to not had a single win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,021 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

I just checked my tracker and on a holding that has averaged €64k, I've gone over 13 months since my last win. Not good!

There is another €23K about to be added to the Lottery profits. At least with Prize Bonds there is no time limit to get your prize.

Hope it's okay to ask here but I was just wondering would it be worth buying €42k worth of prize bonds? It's making feck all in the bank and I really want to do something with it. It peaves me that the bank are using it to lend money to people earning interest from it while I get nothing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 631 ✭✭✭sportsfan90

You'll make feck all with prize bonds too but if it's a choice between the two I'd stick them into PB's, at least you might get an occasional €50 win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭tuisginideach

Or you might win €250,000 ....

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭tuisginideach

I thought I read somewhere recently (or did I dream it?) that the paper Prize Bond 'dockets' no longer needed to be returned when cashing in. I have just downloaded and completed the increasingly complicated Repayment Form which still asks for the paper 'dockets'.

Apparently, in the case of changing banks (in my case, due to withdrawal of old bank) they will accept any official document from the new bank with names, address, IBAN - not necessarily a Bank Statement.

Hmmm - no reference to that on the form available online. Thanks dx

It says "Coming Soon". I expect they will have to withdraw the printed forms in Post Offices and supply new ones before they can change the online version.

I think the only people who are aware of it are those who won in the last few weeks?

    Edit:

I just saw this on the website. May be something to do with this change, or could be unconnected.
