Hi all. Is it possible to get finance on a car from a garage up north when you live in the south?

    If so which garage?

Contacted one garage they said they don't do it.

    Thank you 👍

No, you cannot get finance in a country you are not a resident of.

That's what I thought, I'd looked at Charles Hurst website. They target buyers from south, and I think have a showroom in Dublin too. Which got me wondering whether some might have some kind of setup where they can do this.

Most northern dealers will target southern buyers but they could not offer them northern finance if they are not resident in the north. You maybe able to buy the car through their southern dealership but the finance would be from the south too.

Charles Clarke got back to me, they don't do any finance for people living south of the border.

Looks like I'll have to buy an overpriced, low spec, high mileage car from the south 🙄🙄

Get a loan from the bank or credit union?

Northern Ireland is hardly a bargain haven when you take VRT, NoX, VAT etc into account.

Banks here might not approve a car loan if the selling dealer is outside the State but check with your bank. As Colm points out above, the alternative would be either take out a personal loan from your bank (less strict but usually carriers a higher interest rate) or a credit union loan.

can you not get finance from your own bank / Credit union and buy it ? why do you want to get finance from the person selling the car?
