    It feels like, on almost all fronts, the NTA is failing in its mandate. Almost everything they do is delayed, and when they deliver the end result is always far from perfect.

    Thank you for your comments. I've been reading all your messages and I'm still confused about this 90min fare. I used to have a tax saver ticket but now with the new Hybrid working, I will need to go back to the normal Leap Card. Let me provide a simple example:

    • If I take a bus (Dublin Bus) to the city. Do I need to tap when I hop on and when I hop off the bus? Or only when I hop on? Can I still use the same ticket validator at the back or do I need to let the driver know?
    • Is there any difference in the ticket validation process if I'm only using the bus vs if I continue using any other transport system (e.g. Do I need to validate again when I hop on or off of the Dart, Luas or another bus)

    Buses: Tag-on only - no tag off

    If the journey is 1-3 stages tag on using the driver machine for the short fare.

    Otherwise use the right hand validator for the 90 minute fare

    Use the driver’s machine and ask if you’re not sure of the fare.

    Trains & LUAS: Tag on and tag off

    You must follow that procedure for every trip you make (including different elements of a longer journey).

    The system will record each trip and if you’ve already paid the €2.30 on the first part of a longer trip, it will know to charge zero for the rest.

    What's the correct tag-on/tag-off procedure for changing from Luas to Commuter Train at Broombridge?

    e.g., I tagged on at Luas O'Connell St, held my card up to the reader (once) at Broombridge and again when I got off the train at Coolmine. It seemed to take just €2.30 from my card but I wasn't convinced I was 'legal' if there'd been an inspection on the train leg of the journey.

    I got off the Luas at Broombridge, and held my card up to the reader on the platform (I think that counts as tagging-off). I then got onto the commuter train. I genuinely didn't know whether I was supposed to hold it up to reader twice to signal a tag-off and an immediate tag-on.

    I think you need to tag-off at the Luas platform and then back on on the train platform (i.e. different card-reader).

    If you'd been inspected you would have been seen as tagged-off, but I'd imagine you could argue that you'd paid the fare anyway.

    Cheers, it really wasn't clear to me in the dark what the expected procedure was - whether there are separate readers for Luas/train etc. Broombridge is rather unique on the T90 system I think, with no obvious separation between the two different modes.

    It's a travel method I would like to try again - there seems to be a sweet-spot of 3 commuter trains arriving in Broombridge between 18:00 and 18:12 so if I can get a Luas in O'Connell at ~17:40/45 then for just €2.30 it compares favourably with getting a 39 bus from the quays. Not necessarily always quicker but more pleasant and less prone to a huge downside if traffic is fecked. But I'd like to be sure I'm doing it right.

    The readers are separate at Broombridge for both train and LUAS.

    You need to tag off for one and tag on to the other.

    I had no idea that the right hand validator was for the 90 minute (€2.30) fare! Was this previously for the most expensive fare?

    Would be nice if there was some way of knowing what that validator is for without having to ask on boards.ie! No driver ever told me that I could use it any time I asked for the 90 minute fare.

    2.30 Euro is now the most expensive so it didn't change. Most expensive right validator before and now. That didn't change.

    Some people store both Ramblers and credit on the Leap Card. The driver may have assumed you wanted to use only €2.30 for a single trip from the credit and not have the remote validator deduct an entire Rambler day.

    Ok - if you have prepaid tickets loaded onto your LEAP card, then when boarding a bus you should use the righthand validator to either use a day from the rambler ticket or validate your monthly/annual ticket.

    In that scenario if you want to only use the epurse to pay a fare, be it €1.60 or €2.30 then go to the driver’s machine.

    If you do not have any prepaid tickets loaded onto your LEAP card, and want to pay a fare, then use the driver’s machine for the short €1.60 fare (or if you’re not sure), and use the righthand validator for the €2.30 transfer fare.

    Does anyone know if I tag on a Dublin bus and then tag on at Dublin Connolly within 90 minutes but forget to tag off at the destination Dublin commuter station what fare I will be charged. Is it 2.30?

    From memory, Irish Rail will take their max Leap fare minus 2.30 and you'll be charged that - the difference is refunded on tagging off.

    This is off one set of trips with a temporary card when my partner forgot their taxsaver and I figured out it was cheaper to buy and then cancel a Leap than pay cash fares!

    It is very simple:

    For EVERY bus journey you tag on for each individual bus journey and there’s no tag off

    For EVERY train & tram journey - tag on and tag off for each individual journey

    Fifty or so years of paying for public transport for college and commuting, and now that I've got the old age free pass and enjoying the sense of superiority over the paying hoi polloi they want to reduce prices 😡

    It has it's compensations. I bring the walker on the bus which takes up another seat so I can sit in isolation. Anyway I need another seat for my fedora and my tea flask and sandwiches.

    Also I love the USB ports that are on the bus that I use too charge my phone, iPad, Apple remote, and a couple of torches ... prolongs the journeys a bit if they are low but hey... it's free 😀

    I live in hope, it's a nuisance having to mow the front lawn. Also my gates won't close properly since the Mrs reversed into them about 20 years ago so it would be great to get a new wall, gates and a wedge of compensation ...although I don't think there's one planned for my road 😥

    Yes, it's correct.

    In truth, with the 20% fare reduction, the Travel 90 concept and the 'fare linking' of buses, Luas and Irish Rail, we've genuinely never had it so good for public transport pricing in the Dublin area.

    Note - you could even have got a bus from somewhere to M3 Parkway at the start of your journey and it would still just be €2 for everything.

    Yes it is correct as the “long fare” of EUR 2.00 applies as the two stations are within the “inner short hop zone”.

    Fares involving stations outside that zone (bounded by Rush & Lusk, Maynooth, Hazelhatch and Bray) will be higher.

    Thanks everyone, thats some deal, wont be paying 5 euro car park now 😎

    I try avoid the bus if possible, living where i do in Blanch its bus or nothing and its been a soar point for YEARS (it might turn up, then a hour or so journey)

    I will be going into town this way from now on, 5 minutes in a car, park for free, then two Dart or walk about 5 minutes and stuck on a stuffy bus for a hour (or more)

    Not quite as there are no buses serving M3 Parkway, so that isn’t an option!

    Just to note that the 90 minute fare applies only to Dublin City bus services, and not those of Bus Éireann.

    But you could change to a 45a, 84, 84a, 155, 184 or 185 at Bray Station with no fare penalty as long as your bus journey starts within 90 minutes of your tagging on at M3 Parkway.

    Does anyone know if NTA plan to further consolidate fares in Dublin? Specifically, can we expect a move to a single annual fare irrespective of mode of transport in time for next year to mirror the single €2 fare structure?

    Taxsaver is basically redundant for many now if they don't - single mode, higher rate tax payers who don't WFH and just get the barest level or holidays may still find it saves a little.

    Won't be renewing mine, €4 a day two/three days a week (I always had to drive occasionally, now with a different job it's partial WFH), ~45 weeks a year is 548 in a worst case scenario, when a rail/bus taxsaver is over 700 even after tax.

    Any further tax cut for middle income workers as promised by the current Government will make taxsaver even less appealing.

    I wonder would it not be simply better to scrap the taxsaver system completely and instead direct the funding it receives towards subsidising keeping the 90 minute fare at €2.

    I think the €2 90 minute fare is so much simpler and much more fair as it applies to everyone and not just high tax payers. You'd also save on all the admin costs involved with the taxsaver.

    Where my above idea falls down would be folks travelling from outside the Dublin Short hop zone. But I'd love to see the NTA do an analysis of keeping the taxsaver scheme going, versus scrapping it, saving on the admin costs and simply applying the savings to all public transport tickets. I could be totally wrong, but with the savings on admin costs, it might not be all that far off.

    The taxsaver scheme is quiet unique, I can't think of any other country with a scheme like that. Sure monthy/yearly tickets, but not the tax side of it. I think trying to implement a scheme like this in many European countries would actually lead to riots!

    I also think the entire taxsaver scheme goes very much against the direction that the NTA has been moving with Leap ticketing. With Leap ticketing, they have aimed with simplicity, just use the leap card and you will always get the lowest fare, €2, daily or weekly capping, all done automatically. No need to think about it or plan ahead, it is very freeing.

    The taxsaver scheme on the other hand forces you to break out a fecking spreadsheet to work out if it will actually save you money or not! Never mind the rigmarole you then have to go through with your HR department to get it set up. And it is completely incompatible with the world of hybrid working.

    Might it not be better to scrap it and just make public transport cheaper for everyone, all the time?

    Its also very Sam Vimes Boots Theory - it allows those with more money to get public transit for (in the past, significantly) less than those with less money.

    It also distorts the real subsidy to public transport by hiding some of it. Should just redirect all to normal funding.

    Im back again (the bray air show day out didnt dampen my enthusiasm or maybe more stupidity)

    Im giving up on the Car-M3 Parkway idea as its adding another hourly service and HAVE to go back as car is there (if goes wrong just bus it home), so going 38/A to Navan Road Parkway and then train/s

    Whats the upper limits of North/South side traveling on the 90 minute fare and has anyone any recommedations of what to do (dont want to go the usual places and might get PTSD if i go back to Bray so soon)

    I got a rambler card many years ago and did from Greystones-Balbriggan with a few stop offs and was an interesting day and looking to do a very mini repeat of this

    The 90 minute zone covers Zones 1 to 4 on the short hop zones. Basically from Rush & Lusk in the North to Bray in the south.

    Also any Dublin Bus, Go Ahead City Bus or Luas.

    Also keep in mind if you are making a day of it and hoping on and off different services throughout the day, then you will also benefit from the daily capping on the Leap card.

    Daily capping is €8 if you are using both bus and dart and it covers all dart stops including Greystones if you want to go that far.

    Don’t worry about how that works, just use your leap card, it will just charge you the cheapest fare. If you take just 3 x 90 minute trips, then you will be charged €6, but if you take 4 or more, you will only be charged the maximum fare of €8

    Slight correction - the 90 minute transfer does apply in the whole Short Hop zone on the Dart, there's a fare supplement for zones 5 and 6 so you can go as far as Greystones and Balbriggan, you'll just a pay a bit extra (though if you tag off the Dart in Bray and then tag back on to go to Greystones, it will only cost €2).

    Sounds like you are in the same area as me (38/38a Mulhuddart).

    Re your looking for ideas on what to do (and the mods may move this to a more suitable forum as its not directly related to commuting/fares etc).

    One I regularly do in summer is walk to Clonsilla station, then walk to Maynooth along royal canal, then train straight back to Castleknock and 38 home from outside (€2 fare obviously). It's a long walk (17K) though. But can reverse at Leixlip station instead if feeling tired.

    Also getting to Howth is easily manageable within the 90 mins by bus and train changing at Connolly. Howth lovely in thsse months, cliff walk etc.

    Realistically there is nowhere in the zones 1-4 that you can't get to within the 90 minutes (given that you only have to tag-on within the 90) so use your imagination I guess.

    Cheers everyone for the info and the ideas, the 8 euro cap is a good Safetynet knowing that no matter how much you use or if you are delayed and missed the window then the worse it can get is 8

     @ArmaniJeanss im just up the road in Corduff, some great ideas but unfortnaly the GF has Lymphoma in the legs so rules out walking unless HAVE to. I have cycled from here to Maynooth along the canal and it is nice (say even nicer knowing you are on the train back and can relax and take it in)
