New CEO named. Quicker than I thought tbh, unsurprisingly have never heard of him but has pretty big shoes to fill after Dawson.

SO literally the last 2 games are away in SA. That could be good if we have a strong league position, could repeat last seasons trick. Could be awful if we need results and are in a european semi final. That would mean Quarter Final, Away in SA, Away in SA, Semi Final across 4 consecutive weekends.

I guess though that as the SA teams are in the European Cup they might be in a similar scenario - Probably not the Bulls or the Lions though to be fair.

Let's hope he knows half as much about rugby as he does about Tech.

articl says he’s been a season ticket holder for 10 years, sounds like he only took the job to save himself a few quid.

He doesn't need technical knowledge obviously as you have coaches paid for that.

A commercial head is more important IMO.

According to the Press release he played for Navan RFC and NUIG (as Captain) and also represented Connacht U20's.

So he has a Rugby background.

Very true , but a feel for the game and its heritage are an important element too.

That's a very good hire by the looks. Particularly pleased it's from outside the club, not because it's badly run but after 20 years a fresh set of ideas makes a lot of sense.

True, a good exec is a good exec, but especially in terms of the unique circumstances that faced Rugby over COVID and are likely to face it over the next few years, sectoral knowledge is an advantage.

He seems like a particularly accomplished guy though, if he does half as well as Mick Dawson for half as long, we'll be in good shape.

Looks relatively young too. Hopefully we get another good twenty years out of him.

Worst case scenario about the new CEO. He fails to plug into the culture of running a Rugby province but uses his contacts from his time as head of business sales for Europe to be the best sales man for sponsorships Leinster has had.

Best case scenario he is actually good at his job.

Yeah, commercialisation is important but I really hope he focusses on broadening the game in the province and developing the grassroots. Far too few players coming from beyond the Dublin schools, it's improved with more club players getting a look in at age grade provincial levels but if Irish rugby is to build on the success of recent years it has to start with expanding the pool of kids playing the game, and being the richest and most successful province Leinster is a good place to start.

And Leinster are doing it. The Ken Wall centre in Donnybrook. is one of five planned. the four others will be in the other 4 regions for youths rugby in the province and help trevor hogan and the other sub academy/talent coaches assess and develop clubs based players and those who dont have access to the facilities and coaching within some of the rugby schools. Connacht have been expanding their playing pool hugely with players from all over the province getting through to pro level. Munster are same and have been getting the players through to pro level. academy full in recent years with waterford, west cork players thru youths rugby/"non traditional" routes.... so Leinster isnt really good place to start as its well and truly started in all provinces already.

I think he looks a very good appointment, though it probably didn't get enough attention at the time of his retirement just how much Mick Dawson has done for Leinster under his time in charge. The whole ethos and culture was utterly transformed.

Who do you think within the Leinster management apparatus is responsible for the identification and signing of new players? Would it be purely with Leo and the rugby staff (subject to budgets), or would someone like Guy Easterby have any role in that?

I have no doubt that there is a network of "talent scouts" out there bringing suggestions forward.

Perhaps not as formalised as in Soccer for example , but it definitely exists.

I'd be surprised if there was much scouting in rugby, hard to see how it would bring value for money. Player movement is also nowhere near as fluid and it's not like soccer where you look to identify talent young and then sell later for profit.

Rugby is a very small goldfish bowl, there are really only 4 leagues you need to watch and the number of pro clubs is small. I think a lot of it comes down to just having trusted contacts to give background on players, which is why you see the provinces tend to sign players from the same place, e.g. Ulster / Munster with South Africans, Leinster with NZ players.

I imagine the process is something like coaches and DoR identify they need a player in a particular position next year, and they talk to talent agencies to see who is coming out of contract that could be interested in a move, they go through the list and maybe use some trusted local contact to get some background on the player then make a decision.

I'd imagine need someone out watching the clubs and identifying young players who could make it in the academy and someone to keep a close eye on the AIL, the NPC, Currie Cup, anywhere a solid player or youngster with potential could be picked up.

Yeah, it's something I've always been curious about in rugby, and would love to understand better how it operates.

Dawson definitely had a large involvement in the selection of the head coach it seems which has been a major factor in Leinster's success.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,361 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

I would think there is an informal enough network, people like Nacewa or people like that being contacted about such and such have you seen much of him or we're looking for a big centre any up and comers.

Ruaidhri O'Connor reporting today that the RDS redevelopment and Lancaster's future are on the top of his tray.

The RDS project has been in development hell for the last 8 years and the granted planning permission for the development expires next year so it's quite an imminent issue for him to tackle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,361 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

I’d pretty much forgotten about the redevelopment.

That plus the whole exiles set-up..

It's not a formal "scouting" activity , but there is absolutely a network of trusted contacts keeping an eye out for Irish qualified players across the various leagues.

Internally in Ireland there is a whole formal structure where clubs are invited to send in their "top talent" at the end of the U15 season into a series of camps where they are evaluated and brought into provincial panels where they are monitored etc. The same happens a year later for Schools players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

How often do a team like Leinster pick up a youngster. Most of their acquisitions are IQ which piggyback on the exile scouting system from the irfu or established players.

    I'd agree with this.

I've heard quiet a few leinster players or rumoured leinster players mention that they talked to Isa over the last few years before signing.

I'd say that between the coaches and a few other members of staff there's probably someone who regularly watches every league on the set up too.

Really hope Soroka gets more gameyime this coming season and establishes himself in the team. Rhys long term replacement at 6 that can cover 8 too or does anyone see him being pushed to play looselead lock? Looks to be packing on the muscle.
