Didn't his new side almost stay up in Seria A last seasons

Would they beat a Norwich or Burnley

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I'd probably say no, but that would be going off Burnley before all the changes. New manager and a host of new players it's hard to say what shape Burnley will be in. If you go off that graph the weakest team in Serie A is ranked similar to mid table team in the Championship. The weakest team in the Premier League is similar to mid table in Serie A. There or there abouts.

Different models would have different results but when Rangnick was talking about Burnley last year said they'd be mid table if they played in the Bundesliga and off the model Ai Abacus use it's not far off.

Udinese playing Chelsea tonight in a friendly. Might be an opportunity to get a look at Ebosele and Abankwah for them. Match is being shown on DAZN Canada and ESPN+ if anyone has access to those channels.

Burnley playing at the same time away to Huddersfield in the Championship. Luke McNally and Josh Cullen in contention to start.

Don’t think he was saying it like that to be fair. He was talking about his own attitude and “headspace” as he put it. An opportunity for him to reignite his career. Good to see more Irish players in leagues around Europe.

Connolly seems to have taken an awful kicking in here and online over the past few days. Similar to what Parrott was getting a couple of seasons ago when his loans at Millwall and Ipswich didn't go well. Think most of the comments here have been fairly harsh, he's still a young man who probably shot to prominence earlier than expected and struggled to cope with the external influences that come with such a rise. Hopefully he has a good season and can return to Brighton or get a move to another decent club based on his performances this season

Championship looks real interesting this season from an Ireland perspective. Most so how Obafemi, Parrott, and Idah progress this season.

Obafemi turned it on in the second half of the season. His goal and assist in the game against Scotland were ridiculous and Swansea keeping Piroe we'll hopefully see him pick up where he finished.

Similar Parrott turned things around in the second half of the season when he acknowledged he need to put more effort into his on field performances. His work rate was second to none, and while he didn't score many he did score a couple of crackers between club and country.

It's like groundhog Day when a new season rolls around and the thought is big season for Idah hopefully he avoids injury this time. Has had two long term back injuries in the last two seasons along with a hernia where he missed a ton of games. Was starting to look like the player people have said he could be when he finally got a string of games up top with Pukki before injuring his back. Starts for their U23s today so might not be available for tomorrow's game and could still be a couple of weeks away from being march fit.

While McNally doesn't get a start both Josh Cullen and Dara Costello are named in the starting XI tonight. Big night for young Costello making his senior debut for Burnley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,332 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

I did not see Costello’s promotion to the first team coming since he wasn’t mentioned in burnleys first team squad number squad release yesterday - https://www.burnleyfootballclub.com/content/2022-23-squad-numbers-confirmed

A real bolt out of the blue that. Looking forward to seeing how he and Cullen get on tonight

Costelloe might just be there for lack of options. As far as I can tell, Burnley only have one striker in the entire matchday squad for the game tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Is Costello not a defender, seems to be playing up front, know nothing about him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Went over as a winger but was switched to CF sometime last season for their U23s and scored a few goals for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

20mins in and Cullen already showing he's too good for this level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Good start. Huddersfield would be one of the more progressive teams in the Championship, but they are being bossed by Burnley.

Cullen have a great game so far pulling the strings in midfield, created one peach that Barnes should have done better from. He had a decent chance himself but his shot was a bit too tame to worry to the keeper.

Costelloe also having a decent game so far. Even though he's young and this is his debut, he's done well. He's got the physicality to contest for the ball with the Huddersfield players and has been able to win a few 50/50's, and bring his team mates into the attack. Could have had a goal as well but didn't react quick enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,184 ✭✭✭Xander10

Costelloe seems a confident lad. a bad miss there, but if he keeps getting in the right places the goals will come. Nice to have a potential new option up front.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah you wouldn't think it's his debut with the way he's playing. Wants to be involved and making good runs. With the new five sub rule can see Costello getting good minutes this season. Born in 2002 so underage for the next U21s campaign and only a couple weeks overage for the U19s. Also great to see another Limerick lad playing in the EFL with Anthony Forde dropping down to non-league.

Remember making his debut for Galway Utd about 3 years ago and I thought he was about 21 when he came on, was massive then for a 16 yr old.

I wouldn't call him a striker really, a wide forward, I'd say, is what he'll always be.

That was about as dominant a half of football I have ever seen in the Championship. Cullen easily created 4-5 excellent chances there, I'd say a lot of clubs will be face-palming at the fact that he was available for just £2.5m. Costelloe had a good half and ordinarily you'd be very happy with his performance but he had two very good chances. One he didn't react quick enough to, the other he fluffed badly. Hopefully Kompany gives him a pep talk and can make sure he keeps his head up. If he could get a goal it would be immense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Burnley need to put another one or two past Huddersfield to really lay down a statement of intent.

Cullen with a 100% pass rate in the first half (47/47), and bossing things in midfield for Burnley. Few teams will be regretting overlooking him and even more raging now he didn't get a move to a decent team in the Bundesliga, Serie A, or even La Liga since it was reported he turned down an offer from there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Good 73mins from DC,held his own easily, could have scored, good all round performance

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

From out of nowhere we suddenly seem to have, at least, another squad option based on that performance from Costelloe tonight.

Cullen is quality. Just so dependable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

    MOTM for Cullen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

Didn't put a foot wrong. Ashley Barnes is a bit of a carthorse upfront for Burnley, if they could get just one really good striker we could see Cullen racking up a few assists this year.

Just spotted the EFL Highlights aren't on Quest this year as they have moved to ITV which you can't record on the Sky box as far as I can see

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,052 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Galway producing some amount of decent level players over the past while! Greg Cunningham, Ryan Manning, Aaron Connolly and now Dara Costelloe. My brother taught all but Costelloe in school too... I'd say there was some connection there, except growing up in the same house as him did bloody nothing for my own ability! Though that was in Cork, so maybe it's just a Galway thing...

No you can't which sucks and Quest was handy too because you could get it on the firestick and watch all the highlights back whenever you wanted without needing a VPN.

Delighted Costelloe got a start. I seem to remember him making a few matchday squads last season. But disappointed not to see McNally start particularly as it looks like Charlie Taylor started ahead of him at center back, according to LiveScore, when he is a left back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Yeh woukd have liked to see Nally involved. Great for young Costelloe though. We do need more natural wingers too. Exciting to see how our other lads get on tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭glenjamin

Ebosele came on as a substitute while Abankwah remained on the bench throughout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,287 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

We got Costelloe from an underage/junior team in Limerick, where he's from so we can't claim him as our own.

Alex Murphy is another Galway product though and was in the bench for Newcastle's friendly with Atalanta yesterday. Has been with the first team squad for the last 2 weeks in pre season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

They'll need it if they remain that inconsistent in front of goal. Teams will have seen what they can do when given a bit of time and space.

With a bit of luck Cullen has a clause in his contract because if he can keep up the good performances he'll be a PL player regardless of Burnley going up or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Both start for Udinese v Chelsea this morning, obviously a double fixture

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

This level is probably grand for Rocco Vata but Lawal and Kenny are wasting their time. Kenny's old club just dumped Motherwell out of Europe winning both games and he's playing non-league football in Scotland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,877 ✭✭✭Pogue eile

Johnny is the only one of that squad that has been registered in the first team squad and Agne has mentioned him favourably on more than one occassion in recent weeks, I expect him to see first team actiom this year considering the extra group games Celtic have to navigate in the Champions League. He is only just tunred 19 and has played over 30 Senior League games, bit early to be saying he is wasting his time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,184 ✭✭✭Xander10

    Ogbene off the mark already.

3 starters for Preston. 2 lads on the bench for Stoke

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

O'Shea and Molumby start for WBA.

    Lenihan starting for Bro.

Odowda with an assist for Cardiff today

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Molumby done very well for WBA equalizer. Won the ball in midfield and put Wallace in behind with a lovely ball, who in turn set up Swift to equalize

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

O'Shea was immense yesterday going by some reports. Hopefully he has a release clause in his new contract because he's better than WBA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Francie Barrett

All the Irish lads did well, himself, Molumby and Lenihan. It's just a shame West Brom were utterly septic to watch. No attempt to play the ball whatsoever. With any luck Bruce will get turfed out sooner rather than later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Hourihane was exceptional. Not finished for us yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Doesn't surprise me whatsoever as they were absolute dirt after he was appointed. Ismael's team were rough to watch but under Bruce they were just dirt.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

He absolutely should be finished for us, at least as a starting option, and probably even a squad member. Has not been up to it for us for a couple of years. Scored that FK under Mick but has done next to nothing ever since. He is anonymous when he plays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Birmingham the latest club to supposedly have an interest in Jason Knight. John Eustace is the manger there. If the likes of Birmingham are the only team showing interest he'd be better off in League One for the season and walking on a free next summer.

Hard to believe a decent championship side isn't interested in Knight
