Apart from Sabina Higgins being clueless about Gustav Holst and about the war in Ukraine, her letter was posted on the president.ie website. That's the problem. It can be argued that it was an endorsement of the opinions in the letter by the president. The government makes foreign policy. The way that the letter and its appearance on the president's website was picked up by the Russian ambassador confirms that she is a useful idiot.

It’s only a wet week he was on RTE lying about Russian involvement/motives.

So what? would be my opinion he is preaching to the converted and fear of what he is gonna spin what you say shouldn’t stop you saying it.

It is his job to do that and useful idiots make it easier. When Sabina Higgins' letter appeared on the president.ie website, it helped him. If it had not appeared on the presidential website then it may have gone largely unnoticed. The government decides foreign policy not the president.

What do you mean "if", you're typing for the sake of it at this stage, as if there's some prize for last man standing. I have made my point, she's being a useful idiot which if her views are taken seriously aids russia. You obviously take great offense at that, well, as they say offense is taken not given.

Exactly - Francie, you or I can write away to the IT and no one should or would pay a blind bit of notice.

The Higgins though are in a very different boat, he is elected to represent us the citizens and she is his wife, the first lady. They function as thus when they meet & greet ambassadors and visiting signatories on our behalf.

That s/he should write a letter phrased as it was and have it published both in IT and the presidents official website is a thundering disgrace.

The pointlessness of this I pointed out earlier.

Anyone can be called a 'useful idiot'. It's just another way of saying, 'how dare you have a point of view', let's not pretend.

Who's arguing for Russian Propaganda to be 'tolerated'? Sabina Higgins isn't propagating on behalf of Russia either so I'm not really sure where you're going with this point.

Spare me your sanctimony. There will be many more crimes like this (by both sides) until serious efforts are made to have a resolution to the conflict, which Higgins was advocating.

It has a very specific meaning. It is not simply calling someone an idiot for the sake of it. Once that letter appeared on the president's website, it was going to be used by the Russians. Ireland has a seat on the UN Security Council and the Ireland's foreign policy on the war in Ukraine has been clearly stated. It is not up to the president or his wife to decide Ireland's foreign policy. The appearance of the letter on the president's website was wrong. That's when it stopped being the opinions of some random individual and became a problem. She hasn't been elected to anything.

The ambassador, because he lies can make 'use' of anyone he wants...it means fook all.

Not when the Sabina Higgins' letter appeared on the presidient.ie website. That changed it from being a letter in the Irish Times to a letter on the president's website and one which arguably had the endorsement of the president. The president and his wife don't determine Irish foreign policy. The letter was removed from the president.ie website and there has been an obvious campaign in the media to limit the damage and confine it to Sabina Higgins. The Ukranian ambassador was also quoted as saying that it does not represent the government's policy or the sentiments of the Irish people. Both the Aras and the government would not give any statements to the media on this. That's generally what happens when there is an attempt being made to kill a story. The Indo was calling on MDH to make a comment on the mess that Sabina Higgins' letter has caused.

Housing is a disaster but not as big as this letter.

I agree about the website. It shouldn't have happened but it was taken down.

Put it this way, the only people the 'useful idiot' tag is useful to, is those who pay regard to what the Russians or the Ambassador has to say.

The Ukrainian ambassador understood that. A few here would do well to follow suit.

The 'useful idiot' term is a Cold War one. It applied to people who really didn't understand what was going on but excused the activities of the Soviets and their allies. The Soviets used to use these people in propaganda. Fast forward to 2022 and you have Sabina Higgins' letter being posted on the president.ie website and being used for propaganda purposes by the Russian ambassador.

Ireland does not have an executive presidency like the US and it does not have a "First Lady". The government decides foreign policy not the president and his wife. The Ukranian ambassador's statement was damage limitation to confine the problem to just Sabina Higgins and keep MDH out of it.

There is a war in Ukraine. Russia invaded Ukraine. Once Sabina Higgins' letter appeared on the president.ie website, it was going to be used by the Russians. That's why useful idiots are essential for propaganda purposes. The purpose of the Russian ambassador's propaganda isn't to convince people in Ireland about the war in Ukraine. It is to convince people outside Ireland, and in Russia, that the West isn't united about the war in Ukraine and that, by extension, Russia's actions are legitimate. That's not Ireland's foreign policy position.

    Regards...jmcc

Well it only has meaning to those who would listen to what the Russians or Ambassador has to say.

The rest of us, it has no import or meaning tbh.

Russia invaded the Ukraine. There's only one aggressor. Ukraine is not a member of either the EU or NATO. A State that has been in existence since the fall of the USSR has been invaded by an imperialist State.

You either think that is ok, or you don't.

They are the choices. Everything else is leaning on your politics.

HIMARS are rocket artillery. So huge amounts of damage would be expected.

The theory that the Russians have concocted this in order to discredit Ukraine and Zelensky and to try and stop shipments of heavy arms to Ukraine sounds very plausible. But as usual, it's a ham fisted effort and they've only managed to convince their beloved Putin bots.

looks more like few grenades chucked in. If it was a HIMARS Well not going to be to graphic. There would not be bodies.

The bizarre thing is that they keep accusing Ukraine of false flag attacks, when all the evidence is that the Russians themselves are pathological liars and have been behind every single attack or atrocity that they have accused Ukraine of.

This is not the 1970’s or 80’s. Just a few clicks away you can view in near real time the heinous acts perpetrated by this horrendous Russian regime . Nobody has any excuse thinking that maybe Russia is not as bad as they are being made out. The truth is they are infinitely worse. Fighting a war with 19th century brutality in the 21st century when we can all see what they are at. What a shower of numbskulls .

Micky D's appearance at the Fleadh Cheoil opening yesterday in Mullingar was very low key (presumably there was strict instructions about questions etc.)

The whole story seems to have gone off the front pages of news websites..... "Job done... catastrophe avoided" say Government spin doctors. Pity.

Such an insult to the Ukrainian people, embarrassed to be Irish after this fiasco. Never was a fan of Higgins, all talk no action.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,232 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

She basically told a rape victim to stop struggling whilst at the same time legitimising their rapist.

Then to top off her ill informed rant, she copy and pasted a poem she clearly hasn't read.

    A national embarrassment.

I am no fan of the Higginses but Sabina was perfectly correct imo. Negotiations to bring this conflict to an end are urgently needed before Europe tears itself apart.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,261 ✭✭✭Gant21

Negotiate with Russia, yea that’s a runner alright. Good woman Sabina.

Negotiation with russia is *rewarding* russia. They will demand to retain Ukrainian territory. You're not dealing with rational actors. It's a mafia state. They don't care how many russian soldiers die, as long as they're not from moscow area. As soon as they're able to they'll make more aggressive military moves against Ukraine or another country again. Today is the cheapest time there will be to stop russian aggression and interference in Europe.

Regardless of Sabina and her victim-blaming comments, does anyone really think that Russia can be trusted?

This country signed an agreement with Ukraine in 94 that in exchange for giving up their nuclear weapons guaranteed their sovereignty and security.

This is a country that one day after signing a deal with the UN and Ukraine regarding Grain exports, bombed Odesa, the main hub for Ukrainian grain.

Simply put they cannot be trusted. The only thing they will respect is force and Russia MUST be beaten on the battlefield first before they are allowed come to the table.
