Hard to know. Seeing RTE acting like journalists is a bit of a shock but it was the RTE fake tweet/Frontline fiasco that got MDH elected in 2011. He also claimed that he was going to be a one term president.

It all gets down to the approval of publication of the letter on the website and who approved it. Even then, it might not be enough. The government now has them under its thumb.

The MDH statement didn't really deflate it because it avoided mentioning the letter and was a confirmation of the government position on the war in Ukraine. It was purely damage limitation and it may not be enough. The government may not want the hassle of a presidential election and MDH might not want to resign. The way that the Dublin media has turned on him will be quite shocking as they used to scrape and grovel as if the pair was some kind of royalty. The media has also changed and the Labour party, which was a major party in 2011, was almost destroyed when it went from 37 seats in 2011 to just 7 in 2016. MDH is still identified with Labour.

The story might persist for a whle yet but whatever happens, MDH and Sabina Higgins will have to toe the government line from here on and not get involved in politics. MDH might decide that he has had enough and just resign.

    Regards...jmcc

I’d say MDH is savvy enough to know that he holds a few aces here… neither he or the wife are of the ability to be doorstepped for comment outside the Aras… like another politician outside their home, Dáil Éireann or a restaurant….

she’s VERY prevalent on the Aras ( President of Ireland ) YouTube …..

Their appearances will probably have handlers present with press conferences becoming rarer. There may also be fewer appearances on the Late Late Show. That "First Lady" stuff will also be downgraded. The Aras may very well become a gilded cage for them. The pressure on MDH over his wife's letter appearing on the website may become intolerable. The statement didn't include anything about the letter but RTE and some of the newspapers are still continuing to press the issue. MDH is 81 years old and Sabina Higgins is around the same age. They might just decide that enough is enough and few would blame them.

    Regards...jmcc

Good stuff by MDH, he probably had to make the obvious statesman about the war to calm the hysterical fools screeching in the ether but good he didn't undermine the perfectly valid letter by Sabina.

Laughable listening to FF and FG opportunist politicians railing against SH when their parties have enabled and facilitated the US war machine for decades through Shannon, the stench of hypocrisy is nauseating.

The US is a democracy defending the interests of the democratic world. Russia is an autocracy intimidating and attacking it's neighbours.

These are not moral equivalents and thus there is no hypocrisy.

Sabina Higgins' letter exudes the malfunction of all on the "left" in Ireland - a complete detachment from reality.

    You're welcome.

We’ve been hearing Zelensky and co.’s version of “15 days to slow the spread” for a while now so I’ll be believe the imminent Ukrainian victory when I begin to see it. I do think Ukraine can win if the west / NATO fully joins them.

The short version of my take on the war is that Ukraine has been taking the piss in the Russian-leaning areas of Ukraine for too long. “Peace” talks had become meaningless, weren’t being supported or were being actively undermined by the US and people in these areas were being terrorised. This situation got worse in the run up to the official war. Ukraine never thought Russia would invade because the US had their back. Putin saw no other way out of the humiliation and NATO-creep eastward. Time will tell who has misjudged the situation.

The flag is just an anti-“I support the latest thing” symbol. Ukraine is recognised as one of the most corrupt countries in the west (not that you'd read about this in our papers). Zelenky's elimination (banning) of political opposition and Russian culture (Tolstoy etc.) is 1930's Germany-like. I'll admit to preffering to live in Michael Martin's emerald paradise rather than in a country under Putin's rule. But to pretend that there isn't a huge dollop of "both sides" to the war is either wilfully ignorant or just indicates a childlike understanding of the world.

(I realise this had gone off topic. Just to reiterate : I don't think she should have written the letter.).

Ok, Ukraine aside, I agree with most of this. Not crazy about joining Nato but our current position regarding our national security / defense ("sleeping under the blanket of freedom that (Nato etc.) provides, and then questioning the manner in which it provides it") is childish.

Zelenky's elimination (banning) of political opposition

    That old chestnut.

Zelensky did not ban opposition. He banned pro-Russian political parties. In modern-day Ukraine, that's practically like criminalising Al Qaeda membership, considering Russia is acting like a terrorist state.

I thought Kaiser's guess on the end game was quite logical and could well happen.

Out of curiousity, what is your guess on the end game and the timeline for that end game?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Don't you mean special military operation?

You haven't a clue. There are no "Russian leaning areas of Ukraine". There are Russian speaking areas of Ukraine. These did not want to be part of Russia.

Not in 1991, not in 2014, not in 2022, not at any stage.

Ireland is an English speaking country. If Ireland held a referendum on whether to join the UK, how do you think it would go?

Ukraine's corruption largely stems from Putin's insidious influence and the influence of his criminal cronies in Ukraine. This is why they have been banned! This is what the Ukrainian people want rid of and why Zelensky was elected! Ukrainians want to live in a prosperous modern European country with European standards in which the influence of Russian corruption and criminality is ended!

Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014! They have been occupying it since 2014! Russia has never, ever, ever wanted peace! They only want subjugation and now when they can't have it they want genocide.

The so called "Russian opposition" are active Russian agents out to destroy the Ukrainian state! Zelensky is totally right to ban them and imprison the likes of Viktor Medvedchuk. This is the absolute minimum you would expect. Ukraine has had a genocidal war inflicted on it FFS!

Viktor Yanukovych, should he ever come into Ukrainian hands ever again, should spend the rest of his life behind bars. He was Putin's puppet and slaughtered the peaceful protestors on the Maidan who were protesting him trying to make Ukraine a vassal state of Russia.

There is no "both sides" to the war.

Russia is now hated in every corner of Ukraine like the Brits are hated in Crossmaglen, multiplied by 100.

This is the most simple conflict of our lifetimes to understand.

Russia are the Nazis and Russia invading Ukraine is the direct equivalent of Nazi Germany invading Poland and Czechoslovakia.

The sooner everybody understands all this through the correct framework that Putin is Hitler and Russia are the Nazis, the sooner this war which threatens us all can be won.

You're starting to sound like you believe the wrong side won World War II!

If the north had never been chopped off from the Irish state this would be an excellent analogy. The loyalists would wish to rejoin the UK.

I see us as one (32-county) country but I don’t think you can extinguish a significant part of our country’s ties to Britain (which is what a certain strain of our nationalists want) without having a problem.

I find the 3-letter version more succinct even if it’s not technically accurate. It also gets tiresome to keep putting inverted commas around “Ukraine”. A bit of poetic license on my behalf.

Fully agree and feel the same way as regards 1st paragraph. I would be on the left as well, a Labour voter over the years.

Impossible to know what proportion of it is useful idiocy, and how much is a result of being compromised in some way. I think this balance there is clearer on the far right side of things, with some of the evidence of Russian funding and links etc. in several countries. The result is the same anyway.

You're right that Putin/Russia-friendly bit of the left are often f-cking noisy, out of all proportion to amount of public support that exists for their views. I hope people see and remember what they've been at + what portions of the nationalist right in many Western countries have been at. Quisling-like behaviour (ironically for these right wing self declared "patriots") + apologists and propagandists for evil basicallly. These stances should be taken into account when ticking/numbering any boxes on future ballot papers.

The US is the most powerful economic and military power on the planet though it is in relative decline. They intervene to protect their own interests and destroy anything that stands in it's way. They massacred hundreds of thousands in Iraq in an illegal war, they are currently part financing the appalling human catastrophe in Yemen...one could go on! Ask Cuba, Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador etc about having a neighbour that intimidates and attacks you!!! Defending democracy indeed.

Sabina Higgins pointed out the reality, conflicts either end with a victor which won't happen in Ukraine or a stalemate which will happen there...it's a reality that most sensible people share and when Zelensky is forced to the negotiation table by the US and the EU etc...it will be evident for all to see even those like you who are either blind, dishonest or both!

Speaking of apparent myopia, what makes you so sure Zelensky has the authority to give away large swathes of Ukraine?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭MFPM

Zelensky will do as he's told by the US etc....

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,476 ✭✭✭MFPM

On what planet do you think this war will be 'won'?

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,232 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

    That's not the question.

Are you being blind or dishonest or both?

I'll ask it again, Ukraine Nationalism and Anti Russian Rage is at peak levels in Ukraine.

What makes you so sure Zelensky has the authority to give away large swathes of Ukraine?

If you answer without some remedial soundbite you garnered off Facebook I'd appreciate it.

Ukraine does not want to negotiate and will not until they decide it is best for them. They would fight on without extra Western support if it came to it.

So does the president and his wife think that this will just die away and we will never find out why and how her letter of appeasement to Russia ends up on the official website of the president?

We had some very foolish and naive people earlier claim it was all just a clerical error or nonsense like that but we need to have an investigation here.

Tbh, she and her ilk are typical of the left in Ireland. Braindead from decades of anti-American and anti-western kool-aid, and still when regimes like Russia and China reveal themselves in all their glory we still have the usual nonsense about the west, NATO and their ' agendas' pushed by the useful idiots here and in public life, i.e. Sabina.

Also, she is not really a private citizen. Why did she sign the letter with a double barrel Coyne-Higgins? Why did she write the letter in response to an editorial stating that Russia (the aggressors here) needs to be stood up to and ushering support from Western Nations to back Ukraine? Did she seem to have an issue with that?

This is the editorial piece that she found offensive.

We the Irish people should demand full transparency here and we need to know if Michael D agreed with her letter.

Leftists whitewashed Russia for 80 years before the "alt right" lunatics came along.

Many, many left-wing people thought that Communism was less bad than other forms of violent totalitarianism because socialists always "mean well".

We clearly live on different planets. I live on the planet Earth.

I don't really want to know what far off planet you live on, but it's demonstrably a planet where the only "information" available is Putinist propaganda.

You sure aren't living in the real world, as the following shows:

Thing about RTE (and the Irish Times) is that whenever Mickey Dee goes on one of his Official Visits abroad, one of their journalists accompanies him.

It's normally an enjoyable junket, so most journalists would love to get the gig - but they need to keep their noses clean or the Áras Press Office will make it known that they're not welcome. (And there are other nasty little things that the Áras Press Office can do to journalists who don't toe the line.)

Lol, the Moscow Micks of boards hate being reminded of those howlers!

Some had the good grace to bow out from boards, plenty more went the re-reg route to hide from the embarrassment of the posts. And then we have the tulips that retains their accounts and think they won't get them put under their nose and get kicked up and down the thread for fun.

I expect the President will say : the letter was a private opinion expressed by his wife, as is her right as a citizen in a Liberal democracy . It should not have been published on the official website, therefore the minor functionary with responsibility for the website will be publicly humiliated and shot at dawn. Despite the likely scenario that he/she dare NOT publish the letter from The First Lady. As if that 'minor functionary' has any real choice in what gets published.

(fgs! I've edited the above paragraph 3 times to try to make it clear that I don't think the web admin REALLY gets to say what goes out, reminder to self - KISS)

All will then be forgiven, with the minor functionary subsequently reanimated and "as you were, lads".

Minor functionary is the term I use, not to denigrate anyone's position, but rather to show their place in the pecking order when the anti-shite shields are being handed out.

As we all know, shite falls downwards.

Edit to add (perhaps unnecessarily) I use the title First Lady in a tongue in cheek, rather than mocking way.

That does not look one bit good in fact I'd be taking a deep reflection in the mirror and wondering 'Is this really the opinion that I want to be remembered for by my descendants?'
