Shimano Ultegra 6800 Crank arm (53-39 172.5) snapped

For anyone who has suffered similar failures outside the 2 year window it might be worth getting in touch directly with Shimano. They might provide support where an LBS may not.

I had an Ultegra 6800 crank.. with a fair few Kms on it..

Felt a click or weakness on the left side and found a crack right across the inside of the left clamp arm, opposite the pedal on the inside...

Out of wannanty...was quite disappointed.. it is clever to have only a X2 year warranty...

I think it cracked and failed around Summertime 2021..

I contacted Shimano via Facebook Messanger.

They said that the warranty terms were X2 years and to contact a local Shimano supplier ..

I contacted my local shop,who said they would have a charge to assess the damage and then could decide whether it was a defect etc.. I cannot remember exactly.. but it all seemed more hassle than it was worth!

Still worth contacting Madison, the Shimano agent as Mercian Pro did.

I had similar success on a Campag shifter with the main Campag UK service centre who did a repair FOC on a shifter that was 7 years old.

5 years old so irregardless of problems & low kms I’d be sure you have no comeback unfortunately.

This exactly. The EU stipulates a two year minimum warranty, and allows for individual countries to apply their own longer windows.

Ireland has a 6 year window (with some caveats), so definitely worth pursuing.

I just won an argument with Amazon about a defective product that was outside their limited 1 year warranty. When they say it doesn't affect your statutory rights, what they're saying is the law of the land trumps what they are offering

An update on the saga of my dealings with Madison UK on the issue of replacing an out of warranty failed crank. After finding a friendly bike shop with a Madison account, a warranty claim for replacement of the crankset was lodged. Following a lot of toing and froing with different people in Madison's warranty department taking less helpful positions than the guy I originally dealt with, I was asked a few weeks ago to post the broken part to them (originally photos would do). I am told that once received, the shop will get a replacement part or a credit note. I'm opting for the latter as I replaced the crank with a 105 version a long time ago. Looking forward to buying replacement front and back derailleurs once the credit note arrives.

Different failure mode in solid alu cranks. And much less frequent I would say.

Correct. As I said, there's caveats, one of which is that you may be required to have an engineer/specialist create a report outlining that the fault was not user caused

I'm a member of this club also. My crank was about 5 years old with mainly dry weather use when it started creaking badly. It didn't get to the fully snapped stage as it had just started to debond so I replaced it. Wishbone Ash gave me a replacement (thanks again!) and I later replaced that with a 8000m series Ultegra one which I hope will last a bit longer. Didn't do much about warranty apart from contacting Rose who told me I was over the 2 year warranty period.

I didn't want to open a new thread, but I have been listening to a creaking crank arm too, on close inspection today I can see it cracking so want to replace it, however I only want the crank arm, not the chainrings. Stumped if I can locate one online. Any ideas? Its the old 6800 Ultegra one that's on the way out, happy to replace it with 105 or Ultegra.
