Why didn't cancel culture happen in Ireland?

Usually when culture changes happen in California, they then happen in the UK, then in Ireland

When cancellation culture happened in the UK, they were throwing statues into rivers. It didn't happen here?

    Why didn't it happen here?

Cos we do begrudgery instead! That way nobody needs to be cancelled.

We were getting rid of statues long before it became sanctified and acceptable to do so

Joe Brolly got cancelled from RTE and the Claire Bryne show but I don't blame them.

It does exist but it isn't as obvious, for example I was banned from Reddit Ireland for starting a discussion about Irish incels, it wasn't even an aggressive post. I also was banned from the main GAA forum for mentioning autism. I also was banned from another GAA forum because I explained the reasons why I don't like ladies football. The mods hounded me after that.

We have rather a lot less statues of Confederates or slave owners. And plenty of statues were blown up (or buried or just removed) here before.

    Cancel culture doesn’t exist.

Wealthy public figures can’t deal with negative reactions from ordinary people on social media so they peddled this “cancel culture” myth in order to make useful rightwing idiots on the internet think that there is a massive “far left” conspiracy against their heroes. It’s all a load of culture war rubbish cooked up to get thickos on the right foaming at the mouth.

It’s similar to the trans high-end athlete “debate,” it effects less than 1% of 1% of people and yet the drooling right wing doofuses on the internet are falling over themselves crying about men in wigs playing women’s basketball. Meanwhile the ruling classes are laughing all the way to the bank.

I think it has to do with the fact that despite years of bombardment of pathetic "culture wars" rubbish from the USA, the vast majority of Irish people are relatively well-balanced and grounded and simply don't buy into this "cancel culture" or "woke" or "MGTOW/incel" etc. rubbish.

As another poster here opined, the numbers directly involved are actually tiny and the internet/social media just hypes this guff up to a ridiculous degree.

Meanwhile the rest of us just get on with our lives and have far more important things to be concerned about.

Kevin Myers, John Waters? I know many people my despise them, but that's the very point. Some of the Media will just bury people they don't like.

And no, I don't necessarily agree with them, but again, that's the very point.

De facto cancel culture is alive and well in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,719 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

    It did.

In years past, Al Porter and Eoghan McDermott would have been cheered on for being 'characters', for the allegations against them. As it was, they got cancelled professionally and socially, before any due process had played out.

The 2 Johnnies just about got away with it. Its been attempted with others like Glenn Hansard over suggested impropriety, Tommy Tiernan over Traveller jokes, Davy Fitz for being a little bollix, Twink for being Twink etc etc etc.

In a spiteful begrudging little Country like Ireland, you'd better feckin believe cancel culture is alive and well.

It's not that cancel culture doesn't exist, it's always been around - it's just been given a stupid name and treated like a new phenomenon.

Public figures' careers have always been damaged by saying or doing something that causes outrage, leading to studios/agencies no longer wishing to work with them - sometimes with good cause. Michael Richards (Kramer in Seinfeld), Mel Gibson and Sinead O'Connor come to mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 984 ✭✭✭Still stihl waters 3

All but the first 2 are still in the public eye regularly, you're talking bollox, and the first 2 tossers are more than welcome to stay wherever the fcuk they ended up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,742 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Regardless of what you may think of them they both lost their careers destroyed (for now anyway) based on allegations that have not stood up to scrutiny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,745 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

You think cancel culture is a new thing? Ask Alan turing about that!

If anything it's a lot milder now than it ever was, years ago if you were cancelled you probably died in poverty and shame. Now they will give you a slot on gb news and you get 50k new followers on twitter

all those folk in mayo (i think) during covid got cancelled (cos of the media outcry).

i would say it doesnt happen here much cos there is really only 1 main broadcaster, funded by the taxpayer so they have to remain impartial (for the most part, they certainly softly push some agendas).

we dont realise how much influence the media has, and in the US its on another level. so if CNN (for example) pushes a story (usually with lots of hyperbole) the sheep will follow suit onto twitter, the persons employer, sponsors, etc.

the mob aint satisficed till they see 'blood'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,636 ✭✭✭dotsman

George Hook got cancelled for trying to encourage girls to be safe (but he phrased it wrong)

The 2 Northern Irish Rugby guys got cancelled for texting their mates about girls

Kevin Myers got cancelled for pondering aloud (his job)

Lots and lots of people have had to apologise or back down from having an opinion for BS things they said.

Cancel culture is alive and well here. Not as extreme as some other countries (mainly because there is not as much to "cancel"), but if you become a target here, if you don't follow up with an immediate apology and withdrawal of whatever opinion/mannerism that rubbed certain groups up the wrong way, then you can expect to get a one-way ticket to canceltown.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 10,612 Mod ✭✭✭✭Jim2007

Only if you go out of your way to make it up. And for your version to work, we’d have had to have no unpopular figures in the past, not to mention the absence of protest, marches etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,633 ✭✭✭maninasia

They got cancelled, especially Kevin Myers.

Veteran journalist, always edgy ,maybe said a few things over the top that he might apologise later for or reflect on, but did he deserve lose his career, be cancelled off the airwaves and broadsheets?

He even had Jewish groups say he wasnt an anti semite but to no avail. I think he should have been given a,chance to move on. The punishment was far worse than the sin.

Read the newspapers and look at the national airwaves, full of bland talking points. Its left or left left of center. Thats it. Theres no public figures on the right of center to get cancellled even. Where is the Irish Piers Morgan? Doesn't seem to exist. At least the British provide different viewpoints and debate more openly. Piers got cancelled a couple of times but he is still kicking.

The Irish media and wider establishment practice groupthink so as long as people don’t step out of line they won’t be cancelled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭Bricriu

What Ireland do you live in, Poster?

Ever hear of writer John McGahern and books of literature being banned in Ireland?

Or Section 31, where the majority of Nationalist leaders in the North were not allowed on any Radio or TV station in the South?

Try voicing an anti-vax opinion or questioning Drag Queens reading to kids on RTÉ and see how it ends up.

Censorship is alive and well in Ireland. Using terms from the US like 'cancelling' just confuses the unthinking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭olestoepoke

The Sean Russell statue comes to mind. It has been vandalised several times, decapitated and completely replaced. More recently some idiots painted the colours of the rainbow on it. Claire Byrne cancelled/cut Joe Brolly off live on tv for telling the truth. George Hook was cancelled for showing his age with a silly comment.

It may not be to the same extent as the US or UK but it does happen here.

or as i heard it described once, consequence culture.

what's different now is that it's harder to bury the fact that you're an unmitigated cock, than it was in the 90s, say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭bad2thebone

I suppose cancel culture didn't happen in Ireland because people are more inclined to be sane and we have a great culture and canceling it wouldn't exactly work out very well.

Although there's an amplified social justice fraternity, they're just idiots, nobody really cares about the current thing.

A lot of the cancel culture, liberals and woke shower are a bit nuts, and people ignore them here.

They should consider themselves lucky, because a lot of woke types etc would have ended up in the sanatorium year's ago. Now we tolerate them by putting them on ignore.

The rainbow flag wearing types already dominate the culture landscape. With the government introducing legisation that is more sweeping in its application to detect "Hate crimes" then we will join our UK neighbours where you can be arreted over a political meme or lose your job for having the wrong opinion (most famous case the late Rodger Scruton).

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 50,891 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

we just talk about people behind their back in ireland, rather than out in the open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭cheese sandwich

For example: minimum alcohol pricing. This was passed with basically no dissent even though it was a blatant attack on the poor and the Scottish precedent demonstrates no health benefits.

See also: criminalisation of payment for sex- again, the political class and ‘official Ireland’ was pretty much in unison on this, even though the Nordic model doesn’t make prostitutes safer and until a few years ago the PC consensus was that it should be legalised.

Also: the proposal to criminalise ‘protest’ outside all medical centres. This is a massive infringement on the right to free association but the political and media establishment are fully behind it

Sean Russel a victim of cancel culture ? !!! And terrible how all those poor Nazis have been cancelled, you can't even fly their flag in the Fatherland.🤑

yeah imagine people not wanting to associate professionally with some who thinks it is acceptable to grope other men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭bad2thebone

Better out than in I say. Those cancel culture mob and other idiot's are a minority. And the media gives them a platform for attention. As the squeaky wheel usually gets more oil, or I suppose should I say gets the wind in their sails. They usually end up on the rocks anyhow.

Yeah gossip is a thing here in Ireland and men are the worst lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,391 ✭✭✭olestoepoke

The thread, in case you haven't noticed is about the existence of cancel culture in Ireland, not the reasons behind it. If you do want to get to the reasons behind it there are far worse people and organisations that deserve the wrath of the looney left in this country than Sean Russell.

Lets start with Fine Gael, if you want to cancel someone who tried to use the Nazis in a fight for Irish freedom then surely you'll want to cancel the party that were actual Nazi's the whole package salute and all. Or maybe you should get your rainbow paint out and cover every Catholic Church in Ireland for the years of oppression, homophobia, sexual abuse, misogony and on and on🤑

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,002 ✭✭✭Economics101

Can't even make a tongue in cheek reference to Sean Russell now without blowback.

    Jesus wept.

    Some downplaying there.

The rugby players didn't just "text about girls" - they talked about that woman in a disturbing way (and if any genius says that that's just how lads are, never ever complain again when lads are accused of being sexist. But it's not just how lads in general are - just scummy ones).

Kevin Myers' pondering out loud was an anti-semitic trope, and sexist edginess (we women can't be that bad really seeing as Kev has a wife). Whether he deserved to have his career ended, I don't think so, but he got arrogant with his provocativeness for the craic, and I don't feel hugely sorry for him. He used to be a quality journalist, then swapped that for attention seeking edgelordism.

All over the world there are statues of people with unsavoury pasts like this one which have occasionally led to locals taking matters into their own hands to vandalize or remove them.

The difference between the statue in Fairview Park that was vandalised for being a Nazi collaborator and the one in Bristol that was vandalised for being a slave trader is that there's no concerted media effort and propaganda campaign defending Sean Russell and calling it "cancel culture", instead our media tends to be far more balanced and simply report the facts, rather than the far right slant that's taken hold in large parts of the UK and US media.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,495 ✭✭✭Markus Antonius

Would have been delighted if the 2 johnnies got cancelled. They are the embodiment of RTE merchandizing - literally created out of thin air, publicised to death and forced down the throats of everyone.

I honestly kept an open mind about them and watched a few of... whatever the fk it is that they do and it was TERRIBLE. They must be the unfunniest, unlikable pair who have ever been undeservedly thrust into the limelight against the will of everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,569 ✭✭✭Hoop66

Oh yeah, he's kicking away. There's only 8 people watching, but he's kicking.

His latest missive about the funeral of David Trimble is a sight to behold. He barely mentions the deceased. Instead he spend most of the article saying how everybody else there thinks he's a great lad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,633 ✭✭✭maninasia

I wouldn't have liked to see those lads lose their livelihood over something so innocuous as quoting other people's texts. Absolutely no malice.

Same as you, not my cup of tea, but it's not nice when there's a pile-on over virtually nothing.

It is because we Irish value and respect our history and because enslavement was not a big thing here like it was in the UK and USA.

Yes some people maybe should not have had a staue dedicated to them the same way as some should but never have like Micheal Collins for instance should have a statue dedicated to him in Dublin. Anyway throwing the statue or whatever it is of someone in the water or hiding it is not going to change that history. It has happened. Get over it move on and learn from them mistakes

You can not learn from your history if you fail to acknowledge that it happened and you will them be prone to making more mistakes like that again.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Same with lads who can't get the ride. Not new. It's idiotic the way something that has always been the way, gets reframed as a "new thing".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,636 ✭✭✭dotsman

    No downplaying at all.

The rugby guys chatted about rugger huggers in the exact same manner that anyone with a brain would expect young rugby lads to chat about rugger huggers. If you don't like the language/tone/laddish behaviour, then don't read their private, intimate, personal messages. But demanding that they have their lives destroyed is just disgusting, bullying behaviour and is the definition of cancel culture.

Kevin Myers job is to be provocative and to use provocative language/questions. If you don't like that sort of journalism, then don't read it or listen to him. But demanding he be fired and made a pariah is disgusting, bullying behaviour and is the definition of cancel culture.
