Peta disappeared down the rabbit hole years ago.

Sorry for any offence or distress caused to any rabbits who can read out there.

But here's the problem..................What is a hate crime? It's a very loose term that isn't easily defined.

If being offensive isn't a crime, why was the guy arrested for posting a picture of LGBT flags arranged in the shape of a swastika?

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,117 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

A hate crime is anything someone doesn't like these days.

Like 'fascist', basically any person I don't like, not necessarily an actual Fascist.

When I was a kid in the 90's shows like Geraldo and Sally Jesse Raphael and Jerry Springer would frequently have KKK on to talk. They would be literally dressed in their ridiculous robes and asked about their ideas. In modern parlance, they were "given a platform". And rather than encouraging future recruits to join them, the kind of exposure absolutely obliterated them. They were exposed as figures of ridicule and quite rightly they pretty much no longer exist nowadays apart from maybe 3 remaining hold outs or some tiny number.

....being held at a venue called "The Workman's Cellar', how inappropriate.

edit: I'm not sure about that choice of flyer either, they look like people who provide special 'services' for 'clients'.

Anyway I'd be surprised if it catches on.

Most people go to nightclubs to score with the opp sex, can't see this being a success either.

My rabbit can't read but I read your post out to him and he took offence to the word "hole". He would prefer you to use "opening in the ground that gives entry to where a rabbit lives".

He also said that rabbits are not actually called rabbits. This is a word human's invented to describe them.

He wouldn't tell me though what they actually call themselves unfortunately. Said humans wouldn't be able to pronounce it properly and just ruin it like we ruin everything else. 🤷‍♂️

He also said they take offence to the human term "at it like rabbits". He said it makes them feel judged.

He went on quite a rant.

He also complained about humans carrying around lucky rabbit feet. He said obviously the dead rabbit didn't have much luck.

Similarly, Nick Griffin of the BNP was given a platform on the BBC and was made look like the clown he is by the audience on Question Time. This was when they were starting to ride high in the Polls and had won council elections.

I would be all for Justin Barrett to be allowed on TV and something similar happen. He was on the radio a few years back and was utterly discredited and caught pulling immigration numbers out of his arse.

The way to address these cretins is to publicly expose them as the gobshites they are. Not allow them fester and grow support in the background.

Exactly. I think young people on the left have never seen these types of figures being debated and exposed. After that appearance on TV the BNP basically got wiped out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,825 ✭✭✭RobbieTheRobber

What about young people on the right. Do they get enough exposure to these types of figures?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,246 ✭✭✭✭Dyr

Not nearly enough, the should get more.

There should be a solemn oath you are asked to swear to appear in public life that you renounce all totalitarian ideals and regimes such as Nazism, Facism, Communism, Marxism and Socialism

If someone refuses, they can be safely labelled as extremists by everyone else. The right in Ireland would be fine with it, the left, no so much 😂

They do get exposure but it's often in an unchallenged echo chamber. Genuinely dangerous figures, on the left and right, should face rigorous scrutiny. They should be made to answer difficult questions, not banned and de-platformed to the fringes where they can spout off without being held to account.

  • Registered Users Posts: 346 ✭✭sekiro

This was the exact example I was thinking of too.

Different times these days though. My guess would be that right now there is a genuine risk that you would put someone in opposition to, for example, the BNP that would be so unhinged and unreasonable that there's a genuine risk that people would actually end up being sympathetic to Griffin etc.

It would be like the difference between Ben Shapiro having one of his "debates" with a level-headed professional journalist or having the "debate" with a screeching privileged college kid. A lot of the YouTube personalities understand this very well and have been taking advantage of it for years.

Fools spouting catchphrases like "be kind" and using the language of love and inclusion while being among the most dishonest, unpleasant and hateful people you could ever encounter. That doesn't help their cause at all but they just don't see it.

Even a professional journalist can foul things up. I am sure that Jordan Petersons popularity soared after his ridiculous interview in Channel 4 where the presenter for some reason thought it would be a great idea to come off so terribly and the whole thing went viral. It's a lot safer to just de-platform people when you can't actually trust that the interviewer or media outlet won't overreach with the hysteria and end up discrediting themselves.

I think there were obvious lessons that could have been learned from Brexit and Trump and the Left and mainstream media could have done with some serious soul-searching in the aftermath. Instead they seem to think that if you can stop the conversation happening on the most public platforms then it's isn't happening at all.

Nowadays I'm not sure you could entirely trust the BBC to not create a situation where a clown like Griffin wouldn't walk away looking like the more level-headed and sensible individual while the other guests screech incoherently down the camera.

But they get exposure in real life. In real life they find out, some of them the hard way, that meritocracy matters and there is no real strengths in diversity. And when they fall in love for most of them it will be for a person of the opposite sex (and not gender), realizing that no matter what they heard, men are actually men and women are actually women. And so on, and very few of them will fall for the trap of make believe reality.

There should be a solemn oath you are asked to swear to appear in public life that you renounce all totalitarian ideals and regimes such as Nazism, Facism, Communism, Marxism and Socialism

Yes. And symbols like svastika and the red star and the hammer and sickle should be all treated the same, as hate symbols.

    Holy f*cking sh1t !!

"Every woman on this show - don't serve the men around us"

Oh yeah, like Cate Blanchets Galadriel did ...

The woman playing the "Dwarf of colour" (She actually said this in another interview.... cringe) she says when POC sing you really hear the struggle and repression from their ancestors in their voice ??? Really ?? how arrogant !

My grandparents were dirt poor, my mother in law grew up dirt poor, if my kids sing will I hear the struggle and repression in their voices from their ancestors - only 2 generations, surely I will ? or wait does that only count for certain skin colour? hmmm how racist eh ?

Or how about they just be their own individual selves based on their own personal circumstances ?? - which thankfully are a big improvement.

The video is full of absolute nonsense, but those were the main points that annoyed me, this show is going to be a disaster and of course when the bad reviews come in they will blame it on "toxic racist far right .... blah blah blah".

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,913 ✭✭✭Cordell

I don't have time to watch him rambling for 20 minutes so I will comment on first 2: I don't hate the Star Trek that I always loved, I only hate the new woke crap. I don't hate Foundation books, I only hate the woke crap Apple TV series. And so it goes on. All these didn't become toxic because of the new ideas and progress, but because for the sake of "progress" they destroyed their legacy. This is the toxic part, not the fans, but the parasites that latch on established franchises instead of creating new ones.

Exactly and he does get to that (yeah the video is too long) on how these actors don't give a **** about Tolkien, it's about their own narcissism - end of.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭TomSweeney

That was another thing, they are talking about How "diverse" people will be able to see themselves in this new series ...

NO!!!! It's not themselves, do these people think I see myself when I see Aragorn or Frodo in the LOTR trilogy simply because they have white skin???

    “I don’t like it, I don’t like it, I don’t like it.” 😭 😭 😭

Honestly, the hardnuts in this thread just sound like babies throwing a tantrum.

Can you go and get in touch with your modern sensibilities?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,420 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

Not sure if it's the right thread for this, there probably is no right thread...

Dr Mara Keire, a historian at Oxford University who writes about sexual violence, expressed her shock at the research paper, tweeting: “How was a description of the author masturbating to the images of young boys peer reviewed and published?”

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,913 ✭✭✭Cordell

I don’t think you’ll find many “woke” people thinking it’s okay to jerk off to little kids.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,420 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

Yeah, probably would fit better in a thread like this, about hoax papers being peer reviewed and published, but that's from a few years ago

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,913 ✭✭✭Cordell

In a shocking development "googlers" will find out that they actually need to do the skilled work they were hired to do - which could lead to other interesting developments, usually when the pressure is upped you start to notice that some of your colleagues don't actually deserve to be there. This can be fun to follow.
