Interesting convo about were we ever as bad as Utd are now..

There's parallels with Kenny and Fergie leaving; both left ageing squads in need of an overhaul.

Our spending under Souey was panic buys, square pegs, and worse, they just weren't Liverpool players. Ruddock, Dicks, Hutchison, Walters and of course Paul Stewart. Rob Jones and McManaman were the only diamonds in the rough. We were almost trying too hard to get back to where we thought we belonged, and I see the same parallels in how Utd have done their business post Fergie.

While Roy came in and yeah the Spice Boys tag stuck, but dammit they played some lovely football at times. They just couldn't defend, even with 3 at the back (was it really 3 when 1 was poor auld Phil Babb?).. Ged then came in added that steel and resilience and the rebuild truly began.

In comparison, Utd now are 10 years in the wilderness and seem to be slipping further and further away.

Honorable mention to the Hodgson era but at least the club acted quickly. Losing to Wolves and making a Charlie Adam Blackpool appear to be world beaters was probably the lowest point as a supporter. But at least it was shortlived.

I see no end to the current malaise at Utd. Then I didn't see any end to the misery at LFC either and all looked lost with Hodgson, Poulson and Konchesky, Gillette and Hicks - one could argue it was the credit crunch that ultimately saved LFC.

Most worryingly for Utd fans, I can't see the Glazers selling anytime soon.

Apols for the rambling post 🙂

Eye catching performance from Neco for Forest today. Kid has bags of talent, hope they get a good run there and that they do well, a good run of games in the EPL will progress him.

Cooper too, plenty of links to Liverpool, who knows, maybe he'll beat Stevie G to be Klopps replacement if he does well 😉

Neco is frighteningly good as a wingback already, considering it’s a relatively new position for him. I could see him at Chelsea or Spurs next season very easily if he maintains his early season form. Mostly down to the fact they use wingbacks and it’s a very specialised role, though.

Good to see Awoniyi on the score sheet as well just a pity he could not get a work permit for his time at the club and got a full season working with Klopp.

This is why i believe we should be awarded the 3 points tbh. We would likely smash them next week with their current form whereas they could be a totally different outfit by the time a re arranged fixture comes up and that is simply not fair on us. We lost the league by a point last season so every edge counts and you just know that the utd fans know this too and would be all too delighted to see us lose the league by a point again having perhaps gotten a draw against us in a re arranged fixture. A clubs fans should simply not be able to affect a matches outcome like that, it ruins the integrity of the whole competition when the margins are so tight imo.

That and like some one else said they will be at it every second week. They are basically acting like a bunch of 6 year olds who were watching their favourite cartoon only for someone to change the channel on them. I'm not gonna pretend I'm not enjoying every moment of their collective tantrum but it is actually ridiculous to be doing it a second time. I hope they throw the book at them and even deduct points off them if they do it. It would be lovely to see a premier league table with Utd on negative points!! 😂

Good post, I agree. I think there are even more similarities. As well as replacing aging squads I also believe, some disagree, that other players were sold when they didn't need to be sold. This needlessly hastened the decline. For Souness for me it was selling Houghton, and Staunton. Houghton could have stayed on for another 2 seasons anyway and Staunton for years.

The same thing happened with United, my jaw was on the floor when they sold Jonny Evans, and then to a lesser extent the likes of Chicarito and maybe Nani and there are probably others. No need to sell them as well when so many key players were near retiring at that time, Rio/Vidic/Evra.

The other one is that the appointiment of Roy Evans was "Let's get back to what worked before", so it was appoint from within, from the bootroom, what worked in 60s-80s. With United the same thing was the interim appointment of Ole who was connected to Ferguson.

Liverpool then realised they needed to look forward not back with the arrival of Gerard Houllier, of course as joint manager with Evans. Christ. But it took a few seasons before we saw the result of that with the CL in 2005.

Football is so much bigger now and United seem even further behind now than Liverpool were in 2000.

edit: a couple of more similarities while I think of it. Buying players with the totally wrong character. Julian Dicks as you mentioned where United had Pogba and now also a moaning Bruno. Compare Bruno and Pogba with Keane or Scholes.

Also the likes of Milner would have been binned as being past it a couple of seasons ago when his presence and character around the club is huge.

After last weekends performance I'm a bit nervous about tonight.

3 points needed first a foremost but would love a comfortable victory to build goal difference and move us up to 5th.

I think Nunez will start tonight.

    What will the midfield be?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,392 ✭✭✭GiftofGab

It must be tough for them - i think I would crack up if I had to go 3 games without a pint. Definitely a very uncomfortable feeling.

What do we think for tonight,

Id go with Naby & Nunez in for Thagio & Bobby

Any word on Calvin Ramsey or Jota ,

Nunez has to start I don't want to hear anymore about easing him in, I see a player desperate to score goals right now. Firmino can offer something from the bench with his trickery but he's just too slow from the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,502 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Yeah Nunez really should be starting tonight, and kept in the team if he does well. Bobby will still get plenty of games over the course of the season but he’s losing his effectiveness and Darwin offers us something unique up front.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,090 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

The midfield is the big one really.

Gomez has to start as Matip & Konate are injured.

    Nunez will start too IMO.

    Fabinho + who?

Elliot & Henderson is unbalanced as it forces Henderson over to the LCM.

Keita & Henderson is more balanced but Henderson was poor against Fulham and Elliot was good in his cameo.

Keita & Elliot is a bit too iffy for my liking. When we need a win, I wouldn't really be going with a risky selection like that.

I'm not too sure that Carvalho will be started in midfield yet.

    Milner? Possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,502 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Diaz likely to be up against Clyne tonight as well, so a lot of our attacking play could well be done on the left hand side for a change. If Keita’s fit, it’s the ideal game for him to start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,945 ✭✭✭dogbert27

    I think Keita too.

    Keita, Fabinho, Henderson.

If in a comfortable position later in the game then subs would be Carvalho for Keita, Elliot for Henderson and Firmino for Nunez.

Oh yeah, 5 subs. Milner for Trent and one other.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,502 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

It might be no harm to use one of those 5 subs on Nat Phillips at some point to sharpen him up. With Konate and Matip both out, we can’t afford to rely on Gomez and VVD alone and the thought of being forced to bring in a rusty Phillips to tighten the defence (pun fully intended) is worrying.

I think Bobby will start. Think he has enough credit in the bank to be given another go. If Klopp drops him, his confidence will be shot and he may look to leave so he will get game time before the WC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,290 ✭✭✭✭rob316

He hasn't been first choice for a long time why would his confidence be shot? Nunez has to start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,175 ✭✭✭chicorytip

Souness just lacked, well, intelligence really and judgement. He was always talking bo----ks about manning up and wanting real men in the team so he goes out and signs the likes of the very masculine Julian Dicks and Razor Ruddock as well a host of other expensive flops. Do you remember Torbjorn Piechnik, Stig Inge Bjornybe, Mark Walters, Istvan Kozma, Dean Saunders and Nigel Clough? Staunton, Houghton, McMahon, Beardsley, Burrows and even Glen Hysen should all have been retained. Not manly enough for Graeme's liking clearly.

He was solely responsible for the retardation of the club which has taken over thirty years to correct. Still spouting the same bu----t on Sky every week.

Because Klopp actually said he played badly, I don’t think that has happened before. I’m not saying he will ever again be our first choice CF, I’m saying I think he will be picked to play tonight.

2 footed tackle with ten minutes left, gets you next Monday off as well.

    Now I wasn't expecting that.

I'd say Joe if fully fit is well pissed. Really don't think Klopp trusts him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,090 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Philips starting is a massive shock tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,580 ✭✭✭✭Riesen_Meal

Seems strange after signing a new contract and all that nonsense...

Maybe he has the ****, who knows?

    🤷‍♂️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

I usually don't care too much about the starting line up as the difference in quality is generally not much but there is a chasm between Phillips and Gomez. This better be some ploy (that doesn't blow up in our faces) to put Phillips on show to hopefully get an offer from someone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭patsy sally

Expected to see gomez start, but as long as the 3 points are collected at the end that's main thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,741 ✭✭✭giveitholly

He was carrying a bit of a knock so only fit enough for the bench

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,388 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

May be a slight doubt or he's not 100% and if he starts may not be able to finish the game or miss United next day out.

Could also be a bit of putting Phillips in the shop window bit I'd doubt it. In fairness to Phillips he has never not given 100% and has usually played quite well when called on.

Is Bobby injured seeing as he's not on the bench?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cmac2009

Gomez mustn't be 100%. There's no way he would be starting over him otherwise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,741 ✭✭✭giveitholly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Reports were earlier that Gomez is still not 100% so you would have to imagine that is the case...also an opportunity to get Phillips in the shop window again.

You would imagine Gomez starts 100 times out of 100 ahead of Phillips. In saying that I wouldn't worry about Phillips at all. He knows his limitations and does the sensible thing from what ive seen of him. Looking forward to it.

For a club so good at selling squad player and underage talent it's very strange no club seems to actully want to buy Phillips.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,294 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Saving Joe for next week maybe

    ******

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,640 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Palace will be lucking their lips, with Trent pushing on and Nat at RCB, there will be oceans of room through that channel for Wilf to sprint into. We need a big start here, kill these off early on, not like in recent games where we've been slow out of the blocks.

This is suddenly a massive game for us.

Hope to God we're not looking for a winner with 15mins to go because the bench doesn't exactly scream match winners/game changers.. missing Jota and Bobby obviously, but its exacerbated by Divvy and Minamino being sold too 😬

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

We apparently want 15m for him, which seems steep for a 25 year old with 20 odd top level senior appearances with the rest coming in the Championship and Bundesliga 2. He also apparently didn't stand out in the Championship last year while playing for the team that came second.

I think a PL team would be mad to spend 15m on him and if I was another club I wouldn't buy any player Liverpool are trying to sell, we've pulled the pants down of nearly every club we've done business with when it comes to selling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,928 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Bobby Clark making the bench If Klopp uses 5 subs I could see him come on and score.
