Bitten by EV bug - what cars could I go for?

My father recently got himself and etron 55 and to be honest, it's made me want an EV. I currently drive an audi A6 and previously had 5 series...so I like that class of car and I will return to them in electric guises in the future I am sure. I considered the PHEV of both but to be honest, I've thought about them for years and haven't pulled the trigger so I'm not fully sold on them or else I would have.

But for now, I want to move to EV and don't have the budget for an etron like my dad and I'm open for the 1st time to moving away from the expensive German brands.

I'm looking for cars coming in under 50k and probably prefer to keep it to cars, I think SUVs just jack up the price unnecessarily, I've no love for them at all.

I'd consider used cars too, 2020/2021 plates doesn't bother me. I know there's unavailability for a lot of new cars.

Initial shortlist is VW ID3, Cupra Born, Ioniq5, EV6. Are any of these even available new? I could wait I suppose but I'd like something early 2023 at the very latest.

Not too worried about range, they will all do the job for me just fine.

Anything else I should look at...

There's very little second hand and if you order anything today it'll most likely be a 232 plate at this stage, never mind 231, unless there's a rake of cancelled orders for 231...

Only hope of a 222 plate is Tesla, Polestar, and at that you might have to take it "as is" with no choice of colours, options, etc.

What size are you after? ID3 would definitely be the smaller of that list, Kona EV would be in that size. Also look at Skoda Enyaq, MG ZS or Peugeot e308 or e3008 which would be bigger.

What to watch - any changes to VRT and/or SEAI grant of €5k in Budget 2023 as any scaling back of either is effectively a price rise for the on the road price. No-one will hold price on order today if there are any changes in budget 2023.

ID3 or cupra born size would do me fine. Leaning towards the cupra at the moment and there's a dealership near me so might tip in for a look.

I did test drive an id3 before but I prefer the sporty looks of the cupra, I accept they are more or less the same car. I see there's a thread here on them so I will have a read.

ID.3 is a great car, my mum has one to replace a 2.0l Golf TDI. She loves it, never wants to go back to fossil burners

Cupra Born is literally an ID.3 in disguise, so it's up to you on which looks you prefer

I've an ID.4 myself and a Leaf before that. Both great cars, my wife is driving the Leaf now and she's converted

If you can make an EV work for you then IMO it's a better experience than a PHEV. A PHEV you have to charge every day to max out your electric range, and they're not as nice to drive as an EV

I actually had a similar experience when test driving the Leaf. I took it for a spin expecting to hate it and not want an EV. 2 hours later I'd put a deposit down, so that didn't go to plan. But I'm happy with the result 😁

In terms of actually getting an EV, well unfortunately the world is against you at the moment. Supply is coming up, but everyone wants one. My advice is ring around dealerships and ask about joining the waiting list. You'll probably be waiting until 2023 if you want one new

If you want one now there's a few going on the second hand market. The problem is you'll be paying similar prices to new cars, the only advantage is you don't have to wait. It's a seller's market at the moment

None of those cars are available for 9-12 months.

Suggest looking at Tesla model 3, you'll get one in september.

Really? I thought waiting times for Tesla had stretched out to next year as well?

No, I ordered 2 weeks ago (custom order, not inventory) and my delivery date is 9th september.

There are some ID4s available to drive away in today, just call around various dealers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 717 ✭✭✭dingbat

ID4s are definitely more available than people think. Completely different turnaround times, depending on how choosy you are re. spec etc., than almost anything similar out there. Work the phone hard!

Some dealers are saying Cupra Born are in stock and others saying September deliveries available. I'm dropping into my local one in a few minutes for a chat and see what the craic is

Cupra born's are expensive enough for that sized car

Stick with the reputable German brands. Volkswagen ID3 is a good choice.

You pop up on loads of discussions with the same boring line annoying people.

I drive an audi and have had 6 bmw so I'm a fan but more reliable than anything else, they are certainly not. They're grand but nothing special. Give it a rest for a while.

Keep an open mind on the Chinese they'll be hitting the market soon BYD looks great, New generation MGs looking promising (personally don't like the current). Chinese are showing they can make good EV's.

Currently VW are ramping up from their production slumps last year (sold the most EVs do far this year) as some people said some available but won't be under 50k (for ID4 & 5)

55k - 60k+ mark for a Tesla and can pick up on inventory. Seems to be ordering sweet spots can pick up on Inventory now.

I ordered one in August last year but missed out on a car in two delivery slots September and Dec and would have gotten it in March this year so pulled the trigger on ioniq 5 and got in Jan (but you haven't a hope on ioniq 5 or Ev6 until next year).

Beware the Tesla sweet spot when ordering you might get lucky for sept but the next batch will likely be Feb/march.

I think if you have an order down the government would be likely to honour that on the Seai grant (no guarantee there). Range for the seai grant I would think likely to drop in the next budget. Had leaked the last Budget but rolled back they may do it for this one.

Polestar 2 is a nice car too but above 50k there might be a few origional Ioniq's new too (not the ioniq 5), but they are stopping production on these if not already and ioniq 6 will replace those. Hyundai Kona electric is grand too but would struggle to get one of those also.

I bought a Cupra Born at lunchtime today! Delivery next month hopefully.

The problem with Tesla is that there’s no PCP option so while the car may be around the same price. But I’d financing it, it’s a much higher monthly fee

You can get pcp if desired through Finance Ireland for Tesla no issues and competitive APR it’s just not advertised on their site but they will deal directly with FI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 808 ✭✭✭podge1979

Why PCP? You planning to hang onto it after the two year you'll have to finance then anyway. Not sure if GFV is that strong with EV's. But then again I'm personally not a fan of PCP didn't it wonce didn't suit me with high enough milage.

Did you look at leasing very popular in the UK and growing in Ireland few companies doing it now like nifti. Not a big fan of that either but is another option.

You literally come up with the same crap for different brands over and over again. You must be cycling to work then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,901 ✭✭✭✭ted1

PCP is 3 years. I plan to get a new one in 3 years

Glad to see nationalism with car brands is alive and well

Pretty much all car brands are as bad as each other these days. They're cranking out the cheapest cars possible for the highest price and only do the bare minimum of competing with each other

At the moment I've a VW ID.4, it's a great car, best I've owned. There are cars out there that are faster, better looking, have longer range or more features. Doesn't make my car bad, doesn't automatically make other cars better

As for sticking with "good German brands", well if VW want my loyalty then they can pay for it. Whatever car I buy next will be based on whichever brand gives me the best deal for purchasing my next car
