Wow great work, goes to show you how a good clean can help sometimes or at least unearth some potential areas to fix.

So, this is now, possibly, the only working Afterburner II Dx in Ireland.

Well done you, it is a spectacular labour of love on your part.

And thanks for posting your journey with it here, it is what this forum is all about.

Ooooh what's the next project? Is it another big sit down machine?

I was just randomly pondering your luck on this when cycling into work this morning - still can't get over the PCB and monitor still working. Not only did they survive years in an American arcade, then in storage, but also the actual shipping process from the US to here.

If nuclear war ever breaks out, make sure to climb into that cabinet.

Thanks folks! Yeah they're machines that really blew me away and were always a dream to own, they've been way out of budget now for the past while for me and difficult to find so buying and restoring was the only way it was going to happen. But I'm glad other people get enjoyment out of my effort too, I'd definitely like to have it publicly playable at some point for others to enjoy as it's possibly and most likely the only functional one in ireland, and likely any remaining ones here probably are rusted/scrap value at this stage unless they were kept somewhere dry. I've still a lot of work but it would have been a shame not to log it as not many of these have actually been restored before and it has some missing parts I'll have to repro/come up with solutions myself. Getting the motion working is the last big hurdle for me, it does move slightly and can hear it trying to move but it is sounds somewhat seized, which is to be expected having sat up for a long time most likely.

Lol brilliant! Yep from looking at the PCB I can see no repairs, caps all look old and everything but look fine. It might have seen less use than some other Afterburner boards if it's been parked up a long time, those Sega X PCBs are known to be really troublesome particular in recent years. Even the fact that it tries to move and is very sturdy with tiny bits of surface rust mostly only around the wheels is a miracle! And very true it's survived a lot! I've wondered how so much dust has just attacked the front of it while the rest is in good condition, was it blowing in for years from outside or something?

Correct it's another big Motion Cab game but definitely not as rare or as advanced as Afterburner DLX.

So now onto the full motion. So looking at the motors and PCBs things looked okay but there were a couple of loose connections and the PCBs looked like a clean would do them good, so I cleaned both PCBs that have anything got to do with the motion drive. The main one being the Triac Drive board:

I'm not sure if the left and right pitch was working before, as it had a loose connection, but it certainly is now! I've only one more motor to get working before the cabinet is fully functional!

Now here's the kicker. The up/down roll motor did actually work, it seemed to not have much power, kept cutting out and I only tested it a few times, but I found that a piece of metal had jammed one of the guide wheels it was on. Once I got it out, I immediately tested it again and boom, the fuse blows on my step down (which surprised me as there are lots of circuit breaker on this). Immediately the game started up once the fuse had been replaced but the up/down motor did not show any sign of life after this like before.

So I have the scenario where my game needs just this one motor to be fully functional, left/right tilt working but up/down isn't. Has anyone here ever owned one of these or does anyone at all have any ideas? I'm thinking something possibly blew on the Triac PCB, I've checked the resistors and a few bits but not really sure how to test all the components. I know of someone who fixes these, but I don't want to send this without being sure. I have tried the circuit breakers, I might test to see if the motor is getting any power to them but that's probably unlikely.

One idea I have is to swap the left/right and up/down cables for the motors but no sure if this could damage anything, I know one is rated 6A and the other is 8A I believe.

Also, one of the triac chips are reading 19ohms while all the others are 29/30, could this just need a new one? I don't know a whole lot about these being honest, just reading from Google. Something I've also notice is this has been replaced before and is different from the 3 other chips. This is one of the up/down motor Triac chips too. But again, I don't know much about these.

Good work on your restoration, I'm going through my AB DLX at the moment too. Not your typical arcade to work on!

My Triac board also needs repair. The cabinet moved up until recently and is now blowing fuses. Any chance you could let me know who repairs the Triac boards?

    Thanks
