No surprise at this man's behavior, the really shocking thing is he has no fear of any reprisals for getting caught.

Sad that there seem to be so many on the fiddle.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

The only thing the minister is sorry about is that he got caught. He'll have to be more careful in future.

How do career politicians get the funds to make this many property purchases? Is it mortgages or perhaps family wealth? I don't know anything about Mr. Troy's background.

There is something distinctly distasteful though about politicians privately profiting through arrangements with public bodies or county councils, potentially using their unique knowledge and connections to gain advantage over the general public.

How do the people of Mullingar feel about their Minister driving up the cost of houses beyond the reaches of their own children?

Questions also need to be asked of county councils who knowingly buy properties at prices vastly inflated over what was paid just months prior. Why didn't the council buy it at the earlier stage first?

I have no party affiliation but FF and FG just seem to be abusing all public trust.

The Ditch are doing a great job and it’s obvious you don’t like what they are doing.

How can you compare it to Dublin Live which is a foooking disgrace to journalism and I say that as a card carrying NUJ member. So I would know more than you about what makes good and bad journalism. Would you care to tell us about your experience or qualifications in the area of journalism.

You are perfectly entitled to have an opinion but in your case you are comparing top quality journalism to atrocious journalism. It’s like comparing. Westlife to the Beatles. Both have been successful and have sold lots of records. However Westlife are not fit to tie the Beatles shoelaces. 50 plus years after the Beatles broke up their music is still played and remembered. You won’t say the same about Westlife in the future.

In the future we will be looking back at the quality journalism done by the Ditch. We won’t say the same about Dublin Live and I can’t think of any article of theirs that is worthy of winning awards. If you can let us know.

I've two simple questions, and sorry if they have been answered already, but I didn't spot them.

    1. What does he gain by not having listed these interests?
    2. Why has he have income from the rent-a-room scheme? Surely with all this property, himself and his wife don't need, or want, to rent out a room in their home to someone.

    1. Nothing as far as I can see.
    2. That's 100% his own business.

Reading all about Troy's business dealings, I can begin to understand why some around here give out about Twitter so much. You won't see much of what was revealed on Twitter appear on our MSM.

I don't know if Robert will be a TD (yet alone a Minister) by the end of August, (his position is surely untenable now) but if he manages to cling on, I would almost be certain in predicting he won't be again.

Fianna Fáil rehabilitation my right eye. Still full of the same old same old it always was.

Robert won't even talk to his local radio station now. I thought he would be wanting to promote the property empire he has and what good it does for his area

And your 100% correct , whilst some might think what's occurred is all fine and dandy and it's his business , this is a former westmeath county Councillor who had access to information other's would not , he retains close connections to this day. He also voted against recent legislation with regard to Rents , essentially in my humble opinion a conflict of interest but perfectly legal, he's clearly profited handsomely in certain transactions (this is not the luck of the Irish) , and there's as many questions to be asked of public bodies as there is of Troy, he's failed miserably with regards to his obligations as an elected representative & even had the neck to pose sleeping rough. Let's not forget he's a Government Minister too.

But aside from all this , serious questions remain and if anything Twitter has done is expose the appalling laziness, some might say Bias in our media Generally and still after all that's been revealed our National Broadcaster continue to tip toe around this fiasco. Well done The Ditch & Twitter

If you want to see how proper journalism is done then watch The Post and All The Presidents Men. Both movies show the bravery of the Washington Post in writing about the Pentagon Papers and Watergate. The bravery shown by the Washington Post is not being replicated enough in Ireland and the Ditch are showing this bravery in spades as they cover Troy Story and other political misdemeanours.

Twitter is doing something similar and as I have already said before you shoot the messenger, please read the message they are sending. The FFG supporters on here and elsewhere are expecting everything to be on message and don't want to read bad news.

I know we are all waiting for Troy Story 6, Troy Story 7 etc, so lets sit back and see what happens next.

It's nothing to do with whether I like it and what they have posted to date, quality is not the word I'd use. Even the Troy stories, which I would be interested in, are pretty uninformative and basically just a listing of facts. There are many sites and media sources I read that I don't necessarily like but I do respect well-written journalism anywhere.

That Labour piece is tawdry clickbait and the core story is Labour activist shows up at vote count with no ticket. There are no clicks in that dullness but mention they are a sex offender and off you go. Even at that it's still little better than gossip with no story.

MSM has plenty to be criticised for but it also has people who can write well. That's really not the case here.

There's no issue with him renting a room in his own house, provided that it is within Revenue guidelines. If he wants up to €14,000 tax free income where is the problem?

The rest of the story stinks though, and he should face a full inquiry.

Ben Bradlee was one hell of a journalist and editor who was also never afraid to take risks.

I can also highly recommend Spotlight a great movie about Catholic Church Child Abuse in America.

All those movies showed what can be done if you are brave and go against the establishment. We need more of that in this country.

I probably am a little over critical of Journalism in Ireland but I personally know some excellent ones, they specialise in investigative features, Social affairs type of stories and covered many harrowing scandals over the years, I know some amazing Tech Journalists also who's work greatly admired not just in Ireland but internationally.

My frustration would be directed at political Journalism in Ireland which frankly has gone to the pits in recent years. Perhaps led by editorial management , but the past week is a shocking reflection on MSM who continue to tip toe around TroyStory .

Could you imagine what Vincent Brown would be doing now? He would be sticking his teeth in to this and not giving up till he drew blood. We need more political journalists like that. But I must say Aoife Grace Moore, Paul Hosford and Ciaran Brennan give me some hope.

I would t call it “tiptoeing” pal.

I would agree with some radio contributor who said, and I paraphrase ‘What’s the point in having rules if there are no consequences when they are broken’

And that should apply to all parties as obviously those ‘involved’ won’t do the honorable thing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,977 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

Now now Brendan you know we're not pals .

But I do agree with that radio contributer. I linked a post re what's the Point of Sipo , Earlier.

I have provided details of the sale of the garden of one of my registered properties, 25 A Rathdown Road, in 2020.

Think his statement lists all of those properties now but his own fault he got into this mess in the first place.

We do, if they need to treat everyone equally, there are a lot who say this doesn’t happen.

I'd no Idea Minister Troy has his occupation down as a Post Master, the man should be presenting Operation Transformation, how does he do it. I was aware he owns a property in Ballynacargy with a post office , I'm surprised we've not seen him compete in Iron Man.

I don't have a "special needs assistant", I assume this is some sort of insult directed at me, possibly questioning my intelligence?

Perhaps it's your own that needs questioned, because if you believe Robert Troy, simply made "omissions" after being a member of D.E for over a decade, God bless your cotton socked naivety.

No matter how you try paint it, either he knowingly made "omissions" and therefore is unfit for office, or he truly didn't understand the rules, despite his time as a politician (even at ministerial level) and so he is still unfit for his office.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,440 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Me neither, often wonder what Dessie has his occupation down as.

    TV repairman maybe ?

    Hmmmm…

Why do you think Eoghan Harris and his buddies went after Aoife Grace Moore?

No idea bro….better not derail this thread though.

Most of the opposition have remained silent on this since it kicked off. Surprised especially at SF ads they'd normally be making hay as the sun shines and be all out attacking it. Paul Murphy, as much as I dislike him,

Obvious reason is that Troy isn't the only one with a poor memory when it comes to filling out forms.

I'd say there's going to be a number of 'request to correct the record' in the coming weeks from many on the government and opposition benches.

Anyway, his refusal to engage with the media is the biggest mistake he has made so far. Some of them won't forgive him for it.
