I dunno, with a bit of imagination, councils could make it easier, cheaper and less risky for enthusiastic and expert individuals to set up interesting shops and providing expert and tailored knowledge in these places.

Fishing tackle shop someone mentioned, vinal records, retro gaming, electronic device repair, specialised pet shop, bike repair, book shops, clothes shops, comic book, remote hubs for working, yoga,

Sorry but most of what you list is very niche and not really feasible. For example, a comic shop, that you mention already exists in Dundrum Shopping Centre which is a huge complex that attracts a large footfall from all over the country and Bray Central and the Main St will not attract that.

it’s all very good come on here and list various businesses but the reality of doing it is very different. Anyhow Bray has many of the businesses you list.

Finally, it’s not up to the council to make business less risky or to subsidise businesses. Businesses have to be viable on their own merits.

    (Edit)

Yes, Bray has a good selection of shops.

When is the Cinema opening ?

Nobody has a clue. Radio silence from the operators.

Hoping they do a nice food option.

was down at the palm yesterday and was super disappointed. €10 for loaded skins which was basically centra like wedges (4-5 wedges) with tablespoon of mince and some scallion/tomato/white onion sprinkled on top.

The discussion as to What should be in a town centre is going to be increasingly interesting.

There will only be a set level demand for coffee shops, so councils will have to look at how they can look after the town. It’s not in a councils interest to have empty shops.

More community spaces in town centres, group insurance schemes for sole business traders, zero council rate for new businesses (increasing over 3-5 years) and lower rates for non-chain stores.

It really depends on what you see a councils job as. If you see a council as an entity that repairs pot holes and that’s that, you’ll never want “interference” from a council in how the town is run. But if you see a council as intrinsically important into the direction a town should take, you’ll welcome it.

Definitely. To be fair the council proactively decided the florentine site needed to be developed about 10/11 years ago and purchased it from developers sitting on it.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Yes but that was after they proactively sold it for a song a decade or so previously. They bought it back for more than they sold it for.

I wouldn't hold out any hope for BTC

If you don't mind me asking, why not? When the site seems to be 95% complete.

Be a different story if it wasn't constructed.

    Btc = Bray Town Council.

As for the shopping centre, who knows.

  • Registered Users Posts: 756 ✭✭✭Lefty2Guns

    Apologies, read that wrong.

The purchase price to buy it back was very low. I'm not so sure they did pay more than they sold it for. Have you more information about this?

Bray Town Council were asked on Twitter about the progress of Bray Central and why WOW, E&T and the cinema weren't open yet to which their response was "we have no further updates"... Doesn't leave us with much hope now, does it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,476 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Clearly something has gone wrong but I think the responsibility lies more with Press Up Group rather than the council. The council just own the land and are the customer of Press Up from my understanding.

Wonder what will happen as large store openings takes months of budgeting, planning and scheduling so I just can't see how the likes of Penneys or TK Maxx will be in there soon if ever.

Are PressUP still looking for staff for Bray Central?

Apparently, they'be been having trouble with some of their other developments.

And yet they are trying to break the UK market with a hotel chain.

Well all projects would be different and separate and we don't know what the issue with Bray is as no information is being released. Rumours of Irish Water connection issues but I just don't think they have any tenants.

Walked by site last night and 2 small units on Main St are just empty shells with no sign of any work going on.

The thing is all the announced tenants were PressUp subsidiaries - DOolally, Wowburger, Elephant and Castle, Double 8, Stella, this bowling alley, etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,476 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

We have known that for a long time. The issue is no announcement on site of anchor tenants, other stores and/or an opening date.

Passed by this morning and met a mate of mine going on to the site. He is working in the cinema/bowling alley at the moment.

He said its still currently a Shell and Core at the moment but he said they have been slabbing walls etc.

I asked did he have any idea of when it will be open, he said "maybe Christmas or the Summer time but I couldn't tell you what year".

Only positive I can take from it, is that there is some construction work going on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,476 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Thanks for that , was he only talking about the cinema/bowling alley? As I thought I saw photos of Wowburger and other restaurants being fully kitted out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 756 ✭✭✭Lefty2Guns

Ye, he was working in the cinema / bowling alley building..

Wowburger and E&C are fully fitted out. I shared photos there a while back.

  • Registered Users Posts: 61 ✭✭ssaannee1980

I noticed this onsite activity today too! Good to see some movement but also - the cinema should have been opened by now lol.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,476 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

Yes something is clearly wrong as the cinema was supposed to be a 6 month fit out and opening in August so how can it be an empty shell?

The silence from Press Up and also Bray Council is very strange on this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 756 ✭✭✭Lefty2Guns

No rush to fit it out if they can't open. Some construction work going on inside which is a positive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,476 ✭✭✭✭murpho999

    But why can’t they open?

Also these projects are planned in advance and the workers are also busy and there’s normally not much flexibility in their schedules something has clearly gone wrong somewhere.
