    That's a terrifying prospect

I have no idea how Wilkins keeps getting ‘promoted’ and I hope this isn’t a succession plan - unless this season goes very well & Friend stays on it’s time for a new voice.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

Maybe after seeing how things are done in the international set-up Wilkins will be attempting to implement Farrell's defensive philosophies/structures. If he could do that it would be helpful for Connacht players' chances with Ireland.

  • Registered Users Posts: 513 ✭✭✭tobdom

Fully agree, this news fills me with dread for the season ahead, given Wilkins track record in charge of our defence previously. What also fills me with dread, in terms of a fear about attendances for the season, is the ticket prices.

€35 for the main stand terrace for all games (no difference for interpros now it seems, no tiered structure for matches), and €32 for the goal-end Bohermore and College road terraces. I was wondering is it an effort to try and flog more season tickets, but I'd have a concern that it will impact attendances overall.

Pretty sure this will be Friend's final season at Connacht so the Wilkins move definitely seems to be a move with one eye on succession planning. For whatever reason, Wilkins seems to be highly thought of in IRFU circles. A move that might be scuppered if we have a bad season which is a definite possibility. Very difficult start and it's easy for things to snowball from there.

I think its worrying times for Connacht. I really feel like the momentum has disappeared from the organisation as a whole and that this season could really put us into the doldrums.

The URC is already stacked against us with the way the competition is structured to give easy points to the Scottish sides in particular but I really can't see us making Top 8 even if we were starting from a level playing field. On top of that I doubt you could have hand picked a worse start.

Kieran Keane coming in after Pat Lam didn't work for obvious reasons but with Friend I'm of the firm belief that we have gone too far the other way. Hes always comes across as a good person and overall he's done a reasonable job given our squad hasn't the depth needed but we are clearly drifting and there seems to be no accountability for the massive discrepancies we see in performance week to week and even within games. I expect some inconsistency but not to the level we showed over recent seasons.

You keep hearing we've had a good chat about things but nothing changes. We paper over the cracks for a few weeks before the next capitulation. I don't see any real leaders in the pack in particular. Oliver is a honest performer and we have some decent individuals but no one you'd be confident going to war beside.

Then when we get a good performance or result he's everywhere in the media. I understand he needs to try and get Connachts name out there but media duties should be managed a lot more professionally. Like for example after the Bulls game last year he got caught up in something innocuous Jake White said and made a huge deal of it rather than using that as motivation internally and the following weekend Dragons humiliated us.

Trying to spin the last 16 qualification as progress was nonsense too. We beat Stade reserves and threw away 2 games from convincing positions one against 14 men. Even Leicester away was an opportunity lost.

Today is just a joke really. Wilkins has proven himself not up to any job he's been given and if Friend is giving more responsibility to the coaches we are in even bigger trouble than I thought.

We have the guts of a decent first XV so we may well get a few good wins and I'm praying that we can keep key players fit to give us a chance but on the horrible away nights in Dragons, Ospreys or Glasgow or wherever when we have to dig deep to get a result you just know it'll all unravel in a 15 or 20 minute spell.

In terms of the support base it's a dangerous move pushing the prices to the level they are. Interpros will get decent crowds but if we have have a handful of points after 6 or 7 games most people will give it a miss over the winter months. No Saturday game til December so anyone outside Galway city or close by could be lost very early in the year. The Challenge Cup group stage games are hardly appetising and basically any standout home games are done by Christmas.

Could be a very sparsely populated stadium for lots of games.

With the new stadium I really believe we need to do what we can to build a strong base but outside of the hard-core there's a big risk to the floating supporter being lost if prices are too high for supporting an also ran team.

Every year is a crisis of some sort at Connacht, I wouldn't be so pessimistic. Mysterious as it may be, Wilkins was presumably recruited by Farrell into the Irish set up, and that involvement should be a good thing for us. Give him a chance. If the season goes badly, nobody will be able to hide from their responsibilities behind the departing AF. Our defence was a shambles last season, Wilkins has to do something about it, or else people will be calling for his head.

Secondly, given how mean the IRFU appear have been to the province (no money for a TH, departing internationals not replaced on a like for like basis), I think we've done very well in recruitment, especially the four arrivals from Leinster. I hope that they will add ambition and resilience to our squad, which we all know contains a lot of talent.

Thirdly, isn't it the case that the rules for the Europe were for two years and this will be the second, thus there is some chance that the stucture which currently disadvantages the province will change? That's my recollection.

In addition to Oliver, I would be happy to go to war with people like Thornbury and Prendergast, among others. In Murray and Dowling we have two strong emerging second rows, Paul Boyle, Bealham, Mathew Burke (who showed great character in stepping up last year at LH). Add in Dooley and Murphy, and I think we have the bones of a solid pack, even if I'm concerned about the front row. Maybe Aungier and Illo will lay that concern to rest this year, and I did like what I saw of DTM towards the end of the season.

The hike in the ticket prices is mad - 32 euros for the terrace is a joke. Who is responsible for the commercial side of Connacht's operations? I hope that if indeed ticket sales fall, the province will look for creative ways to keep attendance up by offering special deals via schools, kids in clubs etc.

Lastly, it would be nice if some of the media around Connacht - Twitter, podcasts, but also newspaper coverage - was to take a more critical position and get behind the demand for accountability. This doesn't mean a constant chorus of bellyaching, but simply not swallowing all the marketing waffle which is now par for the course in professional sports. Much of the media native to the net is letting us down in this regard, apparently more interested in good vibes and growing their number of followers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,099 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

32 is simillar enough to other provinces. The province does keep attendances up through tickets for clubs. always is at least 2/3 clubs with 20-30 tickets in bohermore end each game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,581 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

I cansee Connacht being as poor as last year. The imports should help. But a line has to be drawn on some lads! TOH should not be starting! He's just been a passenger and he's not getting any younger. Aki should be captain. He's very valuable to Connacht. Tierney-Martin needs to grab any opportunities by the sac. Boyle needs to re-establish himself and get over an average season.

If Wooten continues to be jelly in defense, he should be benched. I think Hawkshaw could be a gem and I would try him at 10 or fb. Friend has been very poor. He should have been shown the door.

  • Registered Users Posts: 755 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

Bundee as captain isn't a runner. It's not widely understood that he actually plays very little for Connacht: in two out of the last three seasons he has played more games for Ireland than his province.

My understanding si that Friend has made it clear that he's leaving come season's end. TOH got a one year renewal, and i wasn't convinced, but let's hope his last season is a good one.

Quite unusual to change up the coaching team so close to the start of the season. I wonder if Connacht identified issues in pre season and took measures accordingly, or if Wilkins impressed Farrell/the IRFU to the extent that they saw fit to increase his responsibilities almost immediately. To be fair, Farrell was right to appoint and back Mike Catt and literally the entire Irish rugby public was proven wrong, so I trust his judgement. As for the actual changes:

Andy Friend - Head Coach to Director of Rugby

I like this move. Allows Andy to focus on culture, media, community outreach, player development, squad management, etc. All of which I think he is very good at. Very hard to know how much of a loss he will be in terms of coaching, as we don't know how active he was in that regard over the past few seasons.

Pete Wilkins - Senior Coach with responsibility for attack to Head Coach with primary responsibility for defence

Not as sure on this. Would always rather a specialised defence coach, seems like he will have a lot on his plate. Obviously quite a reductive take, but the attack last year was much better than the defence had been under Wilkins prior, so seems like a counterintuitive move from the outside looking in.

Dewald Senekal - Forwards Coach to Forwards Coach (Lineout & Maul)

Think he did a good job last year. Assume his remit coming in was to sort maul d, which he did IMO. Not sure if he had any involvement with coaching the scrum last year, so unsure if much has changed in that regard.

Colm Tucker – Defence & Forwards Technical Skills Coach to Scrum & Contact Coach

Maybe harsh to not give him time to fix the defence, but it was so abysmal last season that I'm happy to see some proactivity in making a change. Big fan of having a dedicated contact skills coach, think Leinster's focus on that area has been a major contributor to their success. Not sure if "technical skills" included the scrum, so unsure if that's a new remit for him.

Mossy Lawler – Assistant Attack & Skills Coach to Attack & Skills Coach

Seems more like a straightforward promotion, as opposed to the shuffling elsewhere. No complaints here, attack was good last year and hopefully we can build on that.

Ahhhh Boarders, ever the optimist 😀

I like to view the beginning of each season from a positive perspective and then have my misplaced positivity shoved unceremoniously where the sun doesn't shine as the season progresses. I'm fairly certain that this year will be no different.

    Expectation: 44pts 11th

    Hopes: 52pts 8/9th

    Reality: 41pts 12th

    Fears: 32pts 14th

Europe: couldn't give a flying f### run a few academy and young fellas. Maybe target 1 home game for the fans but don't lose sight of the big picture, the league.

Recruitment: Probably the single best recruitment period in Connachts history, we have signed 2 excellent players from Leinster in Murphy and Dooley and a potential Irish winger if he can stay fit plus 2 likely lads from the southern hemisphere and bolstered our 10/12 with a good young fella while retaining all of our decent players bar Arnold who I think we will miss. I can hear lads shouting what about Dillane!! But in fairness he's been short of average now for a good while. Also we have a great signing in Joyce for next year.

Friend: a hugely positive influence overall, I get the annoyance at the slightly blasé public responses to bad defeats however I think he's been an important steadying influence and has brought an attacking mindset to the club, recognizing that big set piece and defensive beasts are outside our budget and seeking an alternative point of difference, that it hasn't made us contenders doesn't mean it's failed, it has succeeded in keeping us where we have been for a decade. Job number 1 for any Connacht coach, don't become another Boarders. The team not the poster🤔

This season and last were always going to be a challenge with the draw rules, I think Connacht are right to use these seasons to prepare for next, hold our own on the pitch, renovate the ground a bit, drag in a few likely lads from Leinster and try to kick on to mid table next season under new management.

We aren't going to buy our way to success and we aren't going to grow it locally with the playing numbers, success is remaining in this league and starting every season with Hope.

Interesting to see six props on the team sheet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,671 ✭✭✭Borders no.2

The danger with writing off a season with the hope of the rules changing in our favour is that it mightnt necessarily be a positive change and you find yourself in the loop of challenge cup season upon season. All the while the key players we have are a year older and like you say we aren't realistically going to get through huge numbers of local players so trying to build a strong squad into the future will be even more difficult.

Even allowing for the changes our league season was effectively over by game 3 last season and even the most optimistic fan knew it was over after Glasgow at home.

The signings on paper look like decent business but it depends on the hunger of the leinster players. If they give full buy in, injury permitting you'd expect they'll improve us.

With the southern hemisphere players you never know. Friend has generally recruited reasonably well in that regard to be fair

If the start of the season goes as anticipated I'd be treating the challenge cup seriously. It's not a prestigious competition but European rugby is the only potential we have to showcase ourselves and to keep the crowd interested after Christmas. Whether we come 11th or 13th or whatever in the league is all the one really. Either we make Europe or we don't. If we are out of contention to make Europe we will inevitably lose our way in the league so may as well have Europe to throw our lot at.

I enjoy the style of rugby we play when it works but playing in an attacking fashion shouldn't negate the need to have some fundamentals to our game. Our lineout wouldn't look out of place in junior rugby at times.

Our defence is a joke. Sometimes you have to hold up your hands butof that we can do nothing about but some of it is due to systems failure and/or laziness of certain individuals. Players like doing the flashy attacking stuff but are either incapable or too lazy to perform basic defensive responsibilities. When a team grinds us down I expect that but as we have seen with defensive maul lineout in particular a lot of improvements can be made by everyone putting their shoulder to the wheel in a coordinated fashion.

Carty is the club captain for the coming season with Bundee and Butler as vice-captains

Saw a few rumours that Friend is leaving at the end of the season and that the club is considering Wilkins as a new top man. Hence the promotion from senior coach to head coach under friend as director of Rugby.

Friend's contract is supposed to be up at the end of the year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,581 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Surely, Carolan and Muldoon could be tempted to return, in some capacity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,099 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Carolan had spent his entire career at home in Connacht. Dont think he'll come back for a few years.

Muldoon. dont see him coming home for few years yet either

  • Registered Users Posts: 755 ✭✭✭Zeugnis

Peter Wilkins has just been involved in what is arguably Irish rugby's greatest achievement ever. People need to give him some space. If this season works out, one assumes that he will get the job.

Carolan has only been gone a year, and Muldoon is in his first coaching job under his former coach Pat Lam. Both need to get further experience, but yes, I hope that both will be back in the organisation at some point.

Great to see Hawkshaw straight in at 10, surprised that there are no outhalves on the bench, so Daly to cover if required. Presumably, that means Conor Fitzgerald and Cathal Forde will be selected against Sale. Any news of how Jack is doing after his operation?

Full time Castres 57 - 19 Connacht. Not exactly what you want to see after reading Borders No.2's post above.

  • Registered Users Posts: 453 ✭✭Former Coach

Wouldn't read too much into a pre-season friendly, especially when we have a different 15 taking on Sale on Friday. Ulster away in the first round of the URC will give us a better idea of where we stand.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

It's funny you say that. Preseason is usually not too far off the mark. And shipping just short of 60 points sounds about right these days. I'm sure if we could defend we would be mighty. Thankfully we have our defense coach as head coach now to solve that problem

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Plus Castres' season starts two weeks earlier than ours, so you'd imagine they are further along in their prep than us. That being said, our defence got utterly shredded last pre season by London Irish, and those issues continued throughout the regular season, so I am a little nervous.

I'm going to assume you're being sarcastic regarding defence ;)

Colm Tucker has been in charge of that area for the last year, Wilkins had defence for the four years prior to that.

I'm glad they made the change now rather than waiting until we've shipped 40+ in a URC game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 513 ✭✭✭tobdom

I'm prepared to 'wait and see' with regards to Wilkins move to Head Coach and responsibility for defence. We all remember how bad our defence was last year, but it really wasn' t much better under Wilkins from 17/18 to 20/21. Clearly Wilkins has something about him given his promotions through Connacht and his recent involvement with Ireland.

Our average points per game conceded last season was a shocking 28!! Obviously we know there were some severe hammerings exacerbating things, but aren't there always! With Wilkins in charge of defence for the previous 4 seasons, our average points per game conceded was 22 (see below).

Friend in DoR role does make sense for me in general, but it'll be interesting (and hopefully not disappointing) to see how it all works out this season.

    Points against/# matches

    • 2021/22: 502/18 = 28
    • 2020/21: 353/16 = 22
    • 2019/20: 360/15 = 24
    • 2018/19: 394/21 = 19
    • 2017/18: 477/21 = 23

    Points for/# matches

    • 2021/22: 399/18 = 22
    • 2020/21: 396/16 = 25
    • 2019/20: 302/15 = 20
    • 2018/19: 475/21 = 23
    • 2017/18: 445/21 = 21

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,808 ✭✭✭b.gud

That team looks much stronger on paper than the one that lined out against Castres, it'll be interesting to see how they go

You couldn't really make anything out of these pre-season games bar hope there's minimal (if any) injuries. It's a nice surprise to see a new backrow scoring a brace though so hopefully that's a positive sign of things to come from Hurley Langton.
