My favourite show as a young teen. New one has no semblance of that last going by the trailer at least!

I'm conflicted because a small part of me is curious but the other part see's it for what it is as it deliberately takes advantage of my nostalgic tendencies.

I think it looks more like something aimed at the current generation of teens, than something aimed at people who watched the original. As pointed out, it's really only the school itself that ties the series together. I might give it a look just out of interest but based on the trailer I'm not sure it's going to be for me.

I've never been a fan of bollywood style movies but this was passable. Overly long, terrible dialogue, one dimensional characters, dodgy acting especially from any "English" characters, too much slow motion, simplistic plot, tropes, cliches, the list goes on. Just don't take it too seriously and you'll have fun, maybe that's the point of Bollywood movies 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,306 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

The trailer was a fantastic postage stamp of blockbuster excess, but watch 3 hours of that? That has a big reason I've been slow to watch RRR. Alongside the supposed jingoism; sick of that with American films in the first place, nevermind Indian versions.

Yep hard to disagree that you have to deal with an awful lot of silliness and tropes - although technically it’s a ‘Tollywood’ film rather than a Bollywood one (because it was made in Telugu, although confusingly only the Hindi version is on Netflix, but that’s a whole other mess 😂). But at the same time it’s easily the most fun I’ve had in the cinema this year, because it’s just so committed to its absurd vision. I’d seen one or two other recent big-budget Indian films, though, which prepared me for things like the dodgy English acting.

TBH, I found it a much easier three hour watch than something like The Batman as it clips along at a fair old pace. I’d recommend watching up until the main (fantastic) title card drop at least… although fair warning that’s further along than you might expect!

And while the jingoism is undoubtedly present there, quite a bit of the concern there is in the context of modern politics in India rather than necessarily the direct text of the film itself. Well, that’s unquestionably there too going by what I’ve read afterwards, but honestly a lot of it flew over my head as I’m just not that familiar with Indian culture and history (things like characters taking on the form of legendary heroes and gods, for example). Though there is an end credits musical sequence where they all salute propaganda paintings of various revolutionary figures 😅

On netflix I watched the latest Untold episode. About the rise of basketball brand AND1. Really good I thought. All the untold episodes are a good watch I think. The best is probably the Bruce / Caitlin Jenner ep. I didn't know much about Jenner and wrote him/her/them off as a vapid reality TV character due to the involvement with the Kardashians tv show. I was very wrong and that episode is very interesting as a life story.

Watched the first 2 eps of Lost Ollie tonight. Really liking it. It reminds me of something I would have loved as a kid, a little bit scary, a little bit sad, but mostly an adventure. It looks really good too. Industrial Light & Magic did the effects/animation for it, and it's really well done. Lovely score too.

For some reason I thought it was a movie. Its it a 4 episode limited series? Or is it a full on 8+ episode, multi season TV series?

The long-awaited feature film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock looks to be gaining momentum in a big way. Sources tell Deadline that Netflix has tapped Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence to helm the pic, with Michael Green adapting the script.

Said it elsewhere already but definitely a property better suited to a TV series than film. The game had a lot of interesting, intriguing characters and twists. A film could just be a very superficial translation, focusing on the action and robots with diver helmets.

Watched the last 2 episodes tonight. Ep3 took some surprisingly dark turns, and then episode 4 left me a sobbing mess. It's a really beautiful and moving little series, I'd highly recommend it to all ages, although, as I said, it does take some surprisingly dark turns so it's probably not for very young kids.
