There was a warning to hit the Submit button.

You will know if your application was successful by trying to reapply - if you were successful in the previous one - the option won't available for subsequent attempts

Just checked Agfood there and my application is still showing as been "online application submitted"......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭Easten

Mine is still showing the same. I'm going to go ahead and do the Dung sampling and weighing next week regardless

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

Got the dung samples done with Oldcastle labs, €40 this year, think it was €25 last year, how much are other labs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 849 ✭✭✭Easten

farmlabs are €6 for the sets then they charge €30/set to test and that's as long as you test before the end of July then it goes to €40 after

Just dug back through my emails there, Farmlabs emailed there customers that ordered test kits in 2020 on June 16th last year to determine who wanted to get them for 2021. They were 30euro if the samples were back with them by August 1st, 40euro if returned between August 2nd and August 28th and 50euro after that up until September 17th. After that, samples would not be tested.

Hopefully similar email is on its way in the next few days......

When is the deadline for having the samples done this year?

I'm don't seem to be getting any reminder texts from the dept. at all this year.

Damn, only saw this now, I've got kit of farmlabs, they recommend not sending by post on a Friday as samples are sitting in transit for few days but probably makes no difference, anyone else post samples on a Friday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,220 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

Sent ours yesterday by registered post, arrived today. Over 8 euro to post them

Did mine a few weeks ago with Farm Labs. Results back in a few days. Negative in both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭jfh

Since the start of this scheme, all my results have been negative, I was hoping to leave until Oct to get a better idea but I understand why the labs need them before then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭hopeso

Yes, my vet said it's a waste of time sampling this time of year.

Got ours weighed this evening. Heaviest cow was 962 kg , another at 900kg and another at 880kg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,379 ✭✭✭893bet

    What age are they?

Are their calves the best calves with the highest daily gain etc?

Are they cows you are keeping or prepping for the factory?

Wonder would it be worth stringing them up if they have a few years on them and replacing with smaller more efficient animals.

Our ranged from 580-780kg. Mostly Limos

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,220 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

The 962 kg is 8 years old. Her heifer calf was born may 1st and weighed 235kg. That's just under 1.6kg dlg per day. She's a tank. All the cows we weighed have calves on them. All pb Angus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Katie 2018

Weighed all yesterday an have to say disappointed with calf weights.back 40 to 50kg on this time last year.same bull calving at near the same time as last year.jan, Feb born lim calves.went with same fertilizer ,creep feeding as usual.nothing changed from year before. No sickness either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭Hard Knocks

My first thoughts are how’s your cows looking for milk & what’s your grass quality like.

We were running short on grass here in June (before silage cut) and you’d notice it in the calf performance, when they went on good grass the cows bags filled and calves started to kick off

If your calf’s coat is dull, no harm in vitamin drench

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭hopeso

40 or 50kg is a lot in a calf? Is the difference noticeable looking at the calves? I know those scales are supposed to be calibrated and everything, but I wonder if it's possible they were out one of the years, especially if it was a rented scales.....Were the cow's weights similar to last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Katie 2018

Cows weighed similar to last year.calibrated scales yesterday so they working fine.dont think was great year for grass it never got ahead of me.doubt il just keep for an extra month build them up a bit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,316 ✭✭✭tanko

When you stand on the scales you know whether they’re working right or not😎.

When is the deadline for the dung samples (Faecal Egg Testing) to be sent in?

I got a text from the Dept (DAFM) saying the 01 Oct 2022.

    Terms and Coonditions say;

7.3 Action 3; Faecal Egg Testing

Faecal Egg Testing is targeted at the control of Liver and Rumen Fluke in adult suckler cows. Samples must be taken and submitted to approved laboratories (these can be found on Department website, at www.gov.ie/agriculture before 03 October 2022. Participants should carefully read Annex 4 for further details on this action

Id assume the 3rd would be alright. But hardly any need to wait till after the 01. No point holding out to till the last second.

Well, I got my Dung Samples sent away today. Sample bottles came yesterday. Now, they came sealed in the envelope I was supposed to send them back in. I still can't figure out how, I could get the empty sample bottles out of the sealed envelope without ripping it, and then used the same envelope to send them back in. 😥

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭hopeso

It sounds like a cock up at the lab. Probably under pressure with a last minute rush. If it's anything like the envelope that they sent me, they done well to fit the 10 bottles into it. It took me a good while anyway.....

Pack I got came with same return envelope as the bvd one, all fitted in and sealed

Hired the scales and got them weighed today. Jeez it was tough going. Am I the only one that experiences this? First weanling in the chute, would not get on the scales no matter how many times I hit it. Got a brainwave and let a narky cow in behind him and she gave him a jolt. He wasn't long moving then.

Scales is bloody heavy too, to be lifting on your own. Got them done anyway. Glad to have it over.

Found the easiest way with those lads was tempt them out by opening the head gate and closing it before they got out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,379 ✭✭✭893bet

Cover the scales in hay and dung

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭ABitofsense

I weighed them Saturday and had to get in the chute & push a couple of them up on to it. Stock too quiet is my issue. They'll just stand there for a scratch so moving 380kg weanlings not easy. Not a fan of hitting as drives them mad.

They had a great thrive since I started creep feeding them (weighed in August when I started). All LM/X and averaging just over 1.5kg/day Vs 1.3 before.

Can the scales be set to zero with the hay and dung on it, or do you have to subtract the extra weight each time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭hopeso

I think a good way is to leave the headgate open, and run them through the crush a couple of times over the scales. Maybe have a cow or two along with them to get them moving. Once they're used to crossing the scales, and realising there's a way out at the front, they'll stand on it better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,379 ✭✭✭893bet

Every scales differs but most can be tarred to zero. Sop of hay and dung be 5-10 kg max. I doubt the calibration tolerance of them is that tight

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,147 ✭✭✭Hard Knocks

Found that year’s ago, no issues now. What I done was run them up the shoot with front gate open to let them get use to walking up onto the scales, then back up the shoot to be weighed. Another no no is weigh & then dose, they’ll not want to get on scales the next time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Dozer1

When I'm on my own I put the scales at the back of the chute let them in one at a time and back them back the chute and onto the scales and its no bother weigh them then

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,458 ✭✭✭hopeso

They are more inclined to go back alright, but do you not have trouble getting them into the crush with the scales at the back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,266 ✭✭✭Dozer1

Nope as they see nothing in front of them. At the top of the chute they see the gate first which stalls them going forward

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,128 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

That's a good idea. I always think that there should be an animal held at the top of the crush outside the head gate. When the second animal is caught in the head gate, then release the front one. Never seen it anywhere but it would speed things up.
