Tonight sees the traditional Trophee des Champions curtain-raiser as PSG face Nantes at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv. Kick-off is at 6:45pm and is live on BT Sport. Friday evening sees Ligue 1 return proper as Lyon host promoted Ajaccio.

This season sees Christophe Galtier take charge at PSG, reuniting with football advisor Luis Campos after the pair won the title with Lille two seasons ago. Wll he prove a success? The bookies don't forsee any issues domestically with Paris rated 1/9 odds-on favourites, while Lyon and Marseille are considered the next best bets at 14/1 shots.

Some thoughts and predictions on the twenty teams based on the order of where they finished last season:

PSG - Di Maria is the biggest departure, while Vitinha, Mukiele and Ekitike arrive. More names are rumoured before the window shuts. Galtier is a big character and tends to foster a never-say-die attitude, something which PSG could do with having. But has he got the stature to command the respect of perhaps the most difficult dressing room in the sport? The best chance for the other teams is that he does not.

    My prediction: 1st

Marseille – There has been upheaval in the summer with Jorge Sampaoli leaving after a dispute over transfer policy. Igor Tudor has taken over after taking Verona from bottom of Serie A to a 9th place finish. Guendouzi and Jonathan Clauss look good buys, while Luis Suarez scored 8 La Liga goals for relegated Granada and could be a decent addition. Despite hopes of signing Saliba, it looks like he’s heading back to Arsenal. I'd worry with CL football and a new coach that Marseille could have the kind of erratic season we've seen in the past.

    My prediction: 6th

Monaco – They narrowly missed out on automatic entry to the CL and will face a tricky tie with PSV as they look to progress through the qualifying path. Tchouameni will be a big loss. Can they find a suitable replacement? In attack, Minamino and Embolo look good signings. Manger Philippe Clement ended the season well with them and if he can keep that form up, they look to me the most likely side to keep up with PSG.

    My prediction: 2nd

Rennes – Bruno Genesio did a great job last season, leading them to 4th place, with 82 goals scored - 8 behind PSG. Nayef Aguerd has been sold to West Ham, which will hurt them. Arthur Theate has been signed from Bologna as his replacement. Will they lose any more key players? Martin Terrier has been heavily linked with a move away and if he does go, that takes away a lot of goals. Mathys Tel has also been sold to Bayern before getting much of a chance to show what he can do. I see them in the battle for CL football but not quite sustaining it all the way.

    My prediction: 5th

Nice - A season that suggested possible CL football, as well as a French cup final, fizzled out with Conference League football, and a cup final loss to Nantes. Galtier has gone to PSG but Lucien Favre looks a very good replacement; he did very well when he was last there at the club. Walter Benitez has gone to PSV and was one of the better keepers in Ligue 1, meaning Pole Marcin Bulka has been signed from PSG to fill the spot. They need further signings, particularly in defense. If they can get some fresh faces before the window shuts, I can see Favre taking the club on.

    My prediction: 3rd

Strasbourg – A great season from Julien Stephan's side saw them narrowly miss out on European football. Their main striker Ludovic Ajorque is being linked with a move away, although right-back Colin Dagba has joined on loan from PSG and should do well. Hard to see them repeating what they did last season and I expect a drop off.

    My prediction: 7th

Lens – Like Strasbourg, they earned a lot of plaudits for their season under the impressive Franck Haise. Cheick Doucoure has gone to Crystal Palace, and Clauss, as mentioned above, has gone to Marseille. They will be tough to replace. If they lose highly-rated Seko Fofana too, the heart of the team, they will struggle to finish top ten.

    My prediction: 9th

Lyon – A dismal season saw them finish 8th, yet Peter Bosz remains in charge. Leo Dubois has gone to Galatasaray and the likes of Houssem Aouar may follow. Corentin Tolisso and Alexandre Lacazette have returned and should make a big difference. Tete’s loan from Shakhtar has been extended, while Nicolas Tagliafico has joined from Ajax. The squad should at the very least be challenging for CL football, but it remains to be seen if Bosz is the one to take them forward. I'm not convinced he's the right man.

    My prediction: 4th

Nantes – A great season for Antoine Kombouare’s side saw them finish inside the top ten and win the French Cup, thus qualifying for the Europa League group stages. Randal Kolo Muani’s loss will be badly felt as he managed 13 goals. The impressive Moses Simon and Ludovic Blas have also been linked with moves away. Moussa Sissoko looks a decent signing from Watford, but more new faces are needed to repeat another top ten finish.

    My prediction: 12th

Lille – The former champions gave a dismal defence of their crown, finishing 10th, although performing reasonably well in the Champions League. Former Roma coach, Paulo Fonseca, has taken charge but will have a tough start. Sven Botman, Mehmet Zeki Celik, Domagoj Bradaric and Burak Yilmaz have all left. Jonathan David and Renato Sanches are also rumoured to be leaving. Mohamed Bayo has arrived, following a good season at Clermont, as well as a string of low-budget arrivals. I can't see them getting close to the heights of the Galtier era any time soon.

    My prediction: 8th

Brest – After a difficult start to the season, Michel der Zakarian’s side rallied to finish just outside the top ten. Pierre Lees-Melou has joined from Norwich, as has youngster Karamoko Dembele from Celtic. Questions remain whether their talisman Franck Honorat will leave or remain. Another mid-table finish would be satisfactory.

    My prediction: 11th

Reims – A solid season for Oscar Garcia’s team saw them finish 12th but they have had two big departures: top scorer Hugo Ekitike has gone to PSG, while dependable keeper Predrag Rajkovic has gone to Mallorca. Japanese Winger Junyo Ito is their biggest signing, coming from Genk.

    My prediction: 15th

Montpellier – A disappointing season for Olivier Dall’Oglio’s outfit, finishing in the bottom half of the table. One of their better players, Florent Mollet, has signed for Schalke, while Stephy Mavididi is linked with a move away. Wahbi Khazri and Arnaud Nordin have joined from relegated St. Etienne. If the new arrivals settle well they may squeeze back into the top ten.

    My prediction: 10th

Angers – It was a strong start to the season for Angers but they fell away in the second half of the season, just about avoiding being pulled into a relegation scrap. There have been significant departures, particularly exciting teenager Mohamed-Ali Cho, who has gone to Real Sociedad, as well as creative midfielder, Angelo Fulgini, who has joined Mainz. Wing-back Jimmy Cabot, now at Lens, should be another loss. Several players have joined for free and on loan, with former Rennes striker Adrien Hunou perhaps the most reliable of the bunch. It could be a tricky season ahead.

    My prediction: 14th

Troyes – Bruno Irles took over from Laurent Battles in January, after the latter fell out with owners City Football Group. It’s unclear if Irles will be in charge for the new season after they finished 15th, with 38 points. The RB Giulian Biancone has joined Nottingham Forest, but their connections with Man City should see them attract decent talent, with Brazilian winger Savio and Ecuador CB Jackson Porozo joining from Atletico Mineiro and Boavista respectively, having been linked with City initially.

    My prediction: 13th

Lorient – It looked bleak for Lorient at certain times but they produced results at the right time to survive on 36 points. Christophe Pelissier, who kept them up, has been dismissed, with Regis Le Bris replacing him, who had been working at their academy. Top scorer Terem Moffi has been linked with a move away. Survival would be a successful season.

    My prediction: 17th

Clermont Foot – After being promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time, coach Pascal Gastien saw them just about survive, as they finished 17th. Top scorer Mohamed Bayo joining Lille will leave a big void, while their CB Cedric Hountondji has joined rivals Angers. Polish international Mateusz Wieteska has arrived to bolster the defence, while Serbian striker Komnen Andric has arrived from Dinamo Zagreb to fill Bayo’s absence. It could be another tough campaign.

    My prediction: 19th

Toulouse – Promoted after winning Ligue 2, Toulouse are back after going down in the 2019/20 season. Englishman Rhys Healey was top scorer in Ligue 2 with 20 goals but has been linked with a move to the Championship. Dutch midfielder Branco van den Boomen managed 12 goals and will be important.

    My prediction: 18th

Ajaccio – The Corsican side are back after being relegated in the 2015/16 season. Remarkably, they were promoted after scoring just 39 goals in 38 games. They will need more goals if they are to stay up. Romain Hamouma has joined from relegated St. Etienne, while Thomas Mangani looks a solid recruit from Angers. Kevin Spadanuda scored 18 goals in the Swiss second-tier and has also signed.

    My prediction: 20th

Auxerre – Returning to Ligue 1 after an absence of 10 years after winning a penalty shootout in the relegation/promotion play-off with St. Etienne, Auxerre will be reliant on Gaetan Charbonnier, who managed 15 goals in 28 games last season. Keeper Benoit Costil has joined for free from relegated Bordeaux, while former Barca and PSG youngster Kays Ruiz-Atil has also arrived on a free.

    My prediction: 16th

Very eventful first 45 between Lyon and Ajaccio. Lacazette with a goal from the spot and an assist on his return and it looked like Lyon were cruising, only for GK Lopes to get himself sent off and concede a pen, which was converted. Wasn't looking too bad for Ajaccio heading into the break but Hamouma has got sent off on his debut just before the break, so it's 2-1 Lyon and 10 vs 10 for the 2nd half.

Full-time and it ends 2-1 to Lyon. Second half didn't match the first for drama. Lyon a bit shaky at times. Still hard to know what you'll get with them.

PSG away to Clermont tomorrow evening on BT Sport.

Lovely overhead goal from Messi as PSG comfortably beat Clermont 5-0.

Strong game from Messi, who got a brace, while Neymar managed a goal and a hat-trick of assists. Perfect start for Galtier despite Mbappe not being in the squad. Clermont were awful, though, and look like they'll struggle to stay up. Gave away some bad goals.

Monaco won 2-1 at Strasbourg despite resting players ahead of the qualifier with PSV.

Marseille vs Reims is the evening game tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing how OM fare as reports suggest Igor Tudor may have already lost the dressing room. Guendouzi had an altercation with him, reportedly. Never a dull moment at that club.

Good start for Igor Tudor as Marseille boss despite the problems behind the scenes. They beat Reims 4-1. Suarez off the bench with a brace and Tavares with the best goal of the game:

Lille won 4-1 as well, beating promoted Auxerre. Jonathan David with a brace.

Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to rescue a point for Nice against promoted Toulouse.

Biggest surprise probably Rennes losing the Breton derby 1-0 at home to Lorient. New €20m signing from Bologna, Arthur Theate, sticking the ball in his own net on debut.

Monaco vs Rennes looks the pick of the games next week.

Mr Nice Guy what are your thoughts on Ligue 1 moving to an 18 teams league?

Not a fan of it, personally. I prefer 20-team leagues. They claim it will help the club finances by having less teams.

In other news, potential Puskas contender from Ligue 2 at the weekend:

PSG beat Montpellier 5-2. Mbappe with a goal and had a pen saved. Renato Sanches scored on his debut. I caught the first half and Montpellier were bad, particularly Sacko at the back. Neymar looks fired up this season. Going well for Galtier so far but the opposition haven't offered much. Next games are a visit to his old club Lille, and then home to Monaco. That should provide a better test.

Monaco and Rennes drew 1-1, which looks a good point for Monaco since they played most of the game with ten men.

What's with Mbappe having a sulk and walking away when they didn't pass him the ball? Was also fighting with Neymar to take the 2nd penalty after missing the first one. Sporting director not happy with his teammates/employees??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

He's had diva moments in the past such as showing up late for training and moaning about being subbed but what he did there was pretty shocking. PSG are claiming he had some personal issue before the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Watched Lyon beat Troyes 4-1 as Tete got 2 goals and an assist. Lyon looked good going forward but Troyes were terrible. Rami with a gift allowing Lacazette to score and he had a shocker; I think he's past it now. I'd worry for Troyes staying up without further signings. Still not sure about Lyon. Their fixtures coming up aren't too bad but the defence looks dodgy.

Monaco beaten 4-1 at home by Lens. Didn't watch the game but was shocked at that and Lens have gone top for the moment. Franck Haise has done some job with them. I'd like to see him at a club with a bigger budget.

St. Etienne meanwhile continue to be a basket case...

3 red cards and 6-0 second half thrashing. I read somewhere there was 0 spectators. A hangover from the crowd trouble from the relegation match I presume?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Yeah I'd say you're right that's the reason. I bet the players are pleased the fans weren't there again. Might have been another meltdown if they were.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Schwiiing

Looking for odds on a PSG unbeaten season. 3-0 and cruising in 35 minutes against Lille. Mbappe with the opener 8 seconds after the kick off. Looked like a training ground set piece.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Schwiiing

7-1 in the end. Ref blew on 89.50. Mbappe hat trick, 2 for Neymar and a goal apiece for Messi and an excellent Hakimi. Be interesting to see how things go for PSG in Europe as theres still some suspicions about the defence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

That's one of the best attacking displays I've seen from PSG. Neymar looks very sharp and seems to be a lot slimmer than last season. Messi was like the Messi of old. Mbappe looks in top form. Galtier has them playing some lovely stuff. I agree the defence looks a bit suspect. Donnarumma wasn't pleased to lose his clean sheet.

Had a look at Strasbourg's draw with Reims earlier. Balogun got his 3rd goal in 3 games for Reims. He's there on loan from Arsenal and looks a very good player. Held it up well and showed good skill on the ball. Reims play Lyon next week so I'm curious how he gets on.

Had a look at Lens' 2-1 win over Rennes. Seko Fofana with another strong performance and he scored a screamer. Can't figure out why clubs haven't been going for him. Their new striker Openda looks good up top as well and he got the better of Spurs loanee Joe Rodon for the 2nd goal. Lens now gone top for the time being.

Nice vs Marseille and PSG vs Monaco tomorrow should be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Schwiiing

PSG and Monaco in an entertaining and sometimes nasty 1-1 draw. Neymar lucky to stay on the pitch after 2 stupid first half tackles. Monaco can feel aggrieved after he won and scored a clear penalty. Suspicions remain about the PSG back line after Volland walked through to score first. PSG rattled the Monaco post 3 times from a Messi rocket off the right post and Mbappe cannoned the rebound off the left post late in the first half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Thought Neymar should have got the second yellow. The ref seemed to bottle a few big calls. Disasi did well for Monaco at the back. Also impressed by their new midfielder Camara. Mbappe had an off day by his standards.

Watched Nice lose 3-0 to Marseille earlier. They were awful and Marseille made it look easy. I like Favre as a coach but he's had a terrible start.

Brest lost 7-0 at home to Montpellier which is a bit of a mad result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭Schwiiing

Another 4 red cards so far tonight makes it 23 red cards in the first 5 rounds this year. Has to be a record. 4 in 1 game alone last week.

Disappointed to see Monaco back to their erratic ways. Follow up a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes by getting beat 4-2 at home by Troyes.

Looks like Mbappe and his new partner will never be welcome in his clubs owners and paymasters country and his partner could be put to death if she goes to Qatar and has intimate relations with Mbappe while there.

Monaco beat Nice 1-0 in the derby thanks to Embolo's goal. Nice now with just 1 win in 6 games and Favre already under pressure. If they don't beat bottom side Ajaccio next week, the fans will get even more restless.

Elsewhere, Balogun got another goal for Reims in their draw with Lens.

Lyon beaten 3-1 at Lorient earlier in a rearranged game. Lorient now level with Lyon on points in 5th. Big turnaround for them considering they were hovering above the drop last season. Regis Le Bris doing well in his first big coaching gig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Good 2-1 win for Marseille over Lille having been a goal down. Sanchez got on the scoresheet. Pity he was suspended against Spurs as he offers them a threat they haven't had for a good while. They join PSG on 19 points.

Paris beat Brest 1-0 thanks to Neymar's goal. Might have been two points dropped had Donnarumma not saved Slimani's pen.

Monaco vs Lyon in the evening game tomorrow should be good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Fun evening game with Monaco beating Lyon 2-1. A draw probably would have been a fair result as Lyon had plenty of chances. Lyon undone by two set-piece crosses from Caio Henrique. Golovin with an impressive game.

Also watched Rennes beat Auxerre 5-0 earlier. The Auxerre CB Coeff had a stinker and cost 2 goals by my count.

Important 1-0 win for Nice at Ajaccio to ease the pressure on Favre. Ross Barkley played the final 20 minutes. Lorient still the surprise package of the season, beating Nantes 3-2 to go 4th. Serious nosebleed territory for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Had a look at Lille's 2-1 win over Toulouse. Lovely finish by Adam Ounas on the volley.

Lille gave a debut to 16-year-old CB Leny Yoro, although he was at fault for the Toulouse goal with a poor pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,643 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

PSG beat Lyon 1-0 thanks to this lovely move finished off by Messi.

Messi looking very impressive this season. Lyon had chances and Lacazette missed a great one, although Lopes had to make many great saves.

Nice with another bad result, losing 1-0 at home to Angers. Todibo sent off after 9 seconds which I think is a Ligue 1 record.

PSG beat Nice 2-1 thanks to Mbappe's winner off the bench. Ekitike was trusted to start but was very poor and Galtier hooked him before the hour. Early days but not looking good for the youngster. Nice were better than recent weeks but don't know why Favre keeps faith with Dante. He looks finished and seems to be at fault for a goal every game. It was his foul that led to Messi's lovely free-kick:
