What annoyed me about the Breakers was they only played a short clip and the Breakers jingle itself went on too long!

There were some random episodes between 1988 and 1992 where they didn't have the Breakers, and that was much better. A whole song could have been squeezed in during the time taken for the Breakers in the case of some episodes! It was a good idea to show the Top 40 countdown (40 to 11) at the bottom of the screen while a song was been shown. At least that saved time. There were plenty of episodes in the 1970s, and probably a good few in the 1980s, that were 35 or 40 minutes, and would have been handy going forward. Moving from the Top 30 to the Top 40 when the episodes were already cut down to 30 minutes caused problems fitting in song selections. Another annoying thing was showing a song that was not in the Top 40, such as some of those live satellite performances, when they did not have time to play all the new movers in the countdown. That worked better when it was the Top 30 and the show was more than 30 minutes.

    And another thing....

Top of the Pops used to have a rule that a song would get played every other week, unless it was dropping in the charts (when it would no longer be played), or was at Number 1 (always played - unless banned). There were some episodes from the late 1980s onwards where a song was at its highest position for a couple of weeks (say Number 2 or Number 3) and they were not getting an airing when they would have been due to be played. Come to think of it, only last week Jelly's Three Little Pigs was a Breaker as the highest new entry at Number 5 one week. Then the following week it was still at Number 5, but was not played at all. Some other Breakers from the previous week were played in full the following week.

Dave live at Reading/Leeds festival right now on BBC2.

    The least hip-hop name ever!

Which of course, I would say to his face.

Gary Numan third on the hate list - aside from that the teenagers of 1980 had pretty decent musical taste.

From The Vaults, which is shown on Sky Arts, is an interesting programme because it shows past performances by artistes on ITV and Channel 4 shows, and studiously avoids BBC programmes.

The Rolling Stones documentary ‘Charlie Is My Darling’ on Sky Arts later at 6.40pm.

Following their tour of Ireland in 1965.

Haddaway’s dancers learnt the routine ten seconds before going on.

Haddaway! No. Thou must have an even number of backing dancers. This is not symmetrical!

PSB on after TOTP at 8pm. Not the PSB who Shane MacGowan referred to as "Two poofs with a synthesizer" after keeping The Pogues off number one that time but Public Service Broadcasting. A really good newish, mostly instrumental band.

Love both versions of PSB - this should be good.

This is very good - George Bernard Shaw. All debut music and they just sound great.

Bought their most recent record not long ago. Caught them in the Academy in 2018 and it was wonderful. Think they played there again this year but this is a different level production.

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

what's with the guy staring side stage at Paul Simon when he's singing about John Lennon??

  • Registered Users Posts: 72,535 ✭✭✭✭Welsh Megaman

'Radio' - eventually played it, but only as part of the breakers (five seconds)!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,963 ✭✭✭furiousox

I saw Sparks in Berlin in March and they were unbelievable.

    Both in their 70s!

Ah yes, Thirteen, thought it was a very underwhelming album at the time, probably a grower but it didn't really get the chance.

What is the fcukin' point of playing five bloody seconds of anything?!?

There must have been some early 1980's unwritten code among fathers to pacify "Are we there yet" kids in the back of winding road holiday car journeys with Simon and Garfunkel.
