It's just hassle. If your partner decides to become abusive/cheat you have a whole pile of legal wrangling to go through before you can shoe them out the door. You'll be there in a desperate situation probably suffering from depression and you'll have a bunch of fat cat solicitors swooping in to take your money

Just before we close it I'll quote comedian Bill maher when he was asked by eight-times married Larry King why he had never taken a trip down the aisle:

"Larry, marriage suits a lot of people. They're called 'women'..."

Yeah it's the ones who can't get a girlfriend, let alone a life partner, who have the strongest opinions about marriage.

My partner and I were together for 12 years before we got married and a further 4 years until we had a baby. We plan to be together the rest of our lives so marriage was easy.

With the way personal taxes and State pensions are assessed in this Country, staying single is the stupidest thing you could so.

And I say that with all due respect to those too ugly to bag a spouse.

The thoughts of going out and doing the whole courtship thing again doesn't appeal to me, i'd imagine you are young but after your 30's (mostly) you just cba pretending to be someone you are not so someone will like you. Was 10 years with my partner before we married so wasn't on a whim

So what if you can’t figure out why anyone would want to get married, maybe it’s just not for you. Maybe the having flings til you’re in your 60’s and hookers thereafter IS for you. Maybe that IS the plan.

Don’t know, don’t care. I was just pointing out that you can’t claim you don’t know why anyone would want to get married any more, when people gave you the reasons they got married. Has nothing to do with your plans.

If you think 200 odd euro is a lot of money I suppose....in my case it was made up for in taxes I would say. Neither of us into flashy huge weddings literally had a nice stay in a posh hotel, cracking suits, registry office, posh meal with witnesses, a few cocktails, a gig, and a cracking holiday after.

To be entirely honest I love my husband and I was happy to marry him. But it has the added benefit of meaning he is my next of kin (handy when I was rushed to hospital recently), it means my pension, house etc would go to him if anything happened to me.

We would stay together regardless of the paper :)
