I did think this was silly when watching it. Why didn’t they just move out of the way? They just stood in the corner and watched.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,554 ✭✭✭savemejebus

Careful now.....Best to just not think about things like that, it's one of the "gateway thoughts" that eventually lead to "harder thoughts" like "why aren't they able to sell for more than six seconds?" or "why are mox and Eddie Kingston the only ones who try to make fans think they are there for fights instead of (insert number here) star matches?"...... Slippery slope

He doesn't even look behind him for about 20 seconds before doing the move ffs

I mean if you want to ignore any suspension of disbelief then you might as well question how exactly an Irish Whip is supposed to work 😂

The problem ain't the necessarily the move, it's the laziness of the setup. It could have been an actual awesome spot instead of just making everyone involved look like a dumbass

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,080 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I always wondered how much of the running is due to the whip and how much is it due to the person being whipped? Like at what point does the momentum from the whip just become the person running the ropes until they stop/are stopped? Kayfabe wise I mean.

I think in an old wrestling game on the NES they would hit the ropes on both sides of the ring from the power of the Irish Whip before stopping.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,927 ✭✭✭Cherry_Cola

I can say that I have genuinely Irish whipped someone in a mosh pit before to great effect 😂. I even have footage of it somewhere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭Sirsok

As a kid I thought that wrestlers go with it to stop shoulder damage and the energy of trying to avoid it would deplete them more.

And they only turn at the ropes to avoid having their back to their opponent and risk being sent to the outside if they stopped at the ropes

Turnbuckle they turn as easier to take impact on back then on chest.

That's how I reasoned with it anyway

I guess Irish whips and running the ropes are easy to justify/suspend your disbelief as they are smooth fluid movements where a move that requires a 30 second setup and require your opponents to stand there in the exact same spot and watch you for 30 seconds is a hard sell.

Did it add or take away from the match. I’d say the latter.

Well seems throwing someone into the ropes can result in a head meeting a groin.

Anyone else feel that there just isn't the same buzz for All out this year like there was for recent years?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭ThePott

Definitely not. I mean comparing it to last year would be unfair but in general All Out this year has had a bad build.

I feel like AEW in general has lost some steam. It just doesn't feel as exciting as it once was and there's a lot of things to point to but it also feels like more people are having that realisation lately. I have AEW Plus till January and honestly, if you asked me now if I was gonna re-up next year, probably not. Plenty of time to turn the tide but I wonder if the honeymoon period is over.

Well it doesn't help that the majority of the talent you would build the event around are injured or just returning from injury.

I still think it it will be a cracking event and looking forward to being there with the rest of a white hot crowd.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭ThePott

I thought people would say this because I know initially they said that for the summer they were missing 3 big names in Punk, Bryan and MJF but Danielson has been back over a month. Punk has been back nearly 3 weeks now and MJF is out for storyline reasons, we assume. That's plenty of time to build something.

Even that aside, injuries happen, AEW has a massive roster right now part of the benefit to that is they build around injuries, it would be an excuse for a card without star power but not an excuse for lack of a build to a PPV.

I know Tony Khan was fighting back weeks ago that the build for All Out was fine and that it would accelerate closer to the time but it seems so thrown together. We still don't know the main event a week out.

I've said the build to some previous PPVs haven't been great and the show still was but wrestling in the ring has never been AEW's problem but lately I do think their storytelling has fallen off quite a bit.

Yea I agree, it definitely seems AEW lost some of the buzz(especially for me) for most of this year, there has been some great matches no doubt but overall storyline wise it seems very flat.

Most champions/championships feuds or matches are thrown together with no real heat, then certain feuds get dragged on way to long (e.g. Inner Circle vs Eddie/BBC). I don't blame the injuries because they have such a big roster, yes the likes of Punk/Omega/Danielson were out but they still had other opportunities.

All Out is next week and tbh it would be very hard to get excited about it when most matches were mad last week on Dynamite with no real heat going into them, The women's division has been in a state for way to long, they have some decent talent there like Ruby,Athena, Shida,Storm, Hayter, Rosa, Statlander(both now out injured) etc with a mix of potentials like Anna Jay, Conti, Kiera Hogan but they havent built anyone up yet. Dont get me started on Baker who seems to be the only one getting air time when she is awful in the ring and gets treated better then the rest.

Also Rampage is awful again bar the odd banger of match but its pretty much skippable or just have it on in the background on a Sat morning especially when your main event was dustin rhodes vs Claudio (no offence to Claudio), squash matches and seems that certain wrestlers are stuck on that show like Swerve in their Glory.

Hopefully with HHH taking over wwe and if their programme starts to improve they might get a kick up the ass or you'll see a lot of stars jumping back/over to wwe.

Yeah I used to watch Dynamite and Rampage every single week without fail. But now for various reasons I've missed a few lately and I don't feel a burning need to catch up. They have the roster to turn it around but it feels like it's missing a spark at the moment.

I was reading that filming has wrapped on the Twisted Metal tv series. So we might get Joe back soon.

I'm surprised they didn't have an interim RoH Television champion while he was off.

All Out will be another cinema job for me since it was fun last time. I'm definitely way more cooled off on it though for a lot of the same reasons mentioned by others. There are so many tropes now that constantly get repeated each week it's feeling stale. I would love more character development apart from the backstage interviews and it's frustrating since they get it so right when they do it for the Road To shows. It's not a ratings winner which is why they don't do it too much anymore but even a little for select people would benefit it massively.

Also for the figure collectors, Smyths won't be carrying them anymore going forward and are starting to discount them a bit now.

Why are Smyths no longer carrying them?

Never been a figure collector but if I can pick them up at a cheap price then maybe that could change.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,927 ✭✭✭Cherry_Cola

Jazwares the company that makes them have stated they're going online only market for the UK. They haven't sold too well here that I can see, shelves are full of them and constantly marked down. I can't imagine there are too many children here watching it over WWE to be honest. Speaking of which, the new Bret and British Bulldog figures are amazing, based on their Summerslam 1992 match. Scalpers have the figure game in the States ruined so it was nice to get the AEW ones handy enough here. Will have to hit the Targets at dawn to have any luck!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭ThePott

Well that's a shame, was surprised they were in Smyths anyway cause like you I figured children weren't going to be too aware of AEW and the market outside that is specialist. I did like seeing AEW figures next to WWE in the toy aisle though, made them feel like a big deal, sad to see it go.

Ya, like other said, not hugely feeling All Out this year. I'll still buy it most likely as the matches will most likely be excellent but storywise, it isn't really there for a good bit of them.

The only two decent stories here built in AEW are Hobbs Vs Stark and Christian Cage Vs Jungle Boy. The others have either gone too long that they're now just boring(BCC Vs JAS, Jade Vs Athena) or have no real build. Another exception is what I guess is the trios final but that's mainly built off BTE rather than AEW.

Yea will watch it Monday when I'm back from EP but not overly excited for the ppv

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,637 ✭✭✭RollieFingers

I know it's not the done thing on Boards to say anything positive about the women's division in AEW but Sakura/Shida was really good. No surprise with who was in the ring, TK should go back to focusing more on the joshis.

It still blows my mind to hear WAVE being mentioned on AEW, let alone seeing the Regina being defended. Very cool, Elevation is definitely one for the nerds!

Also loving Daddy Magic on commentary!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,927 ✭✭✭Cherry_Cola

I feel so bad for Emi overall, uprooting her life to move to Florida of all places and then to not even get a TV match since she did so. No, she won't set the ratings alight but you're guaranteed to get a quality match out of her time and time again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭ThePott

    I think that's a bit unfair.

People say negative stuff about the lack of female representation outside of the Youtube shows, which is accurate. Considering both of those women have been on Dark or Elevation so much more than Rampage or Dynamite in recent months it seems like an okay gripe, especially cosidering their match was good, why is it not being showcased on a bigger stage than Youtube?

I did see the spot where Shida tore her gear open to get chopped, that was awesome. Would love more Shida/Joshis on TV.

In other news, some people are speculating that there is a streaming deal as AEW have pulled DVDs from their site. Although it could be nothing, considering they may just not have been selling, this is probably the first most people have heard about AEW PPV DVDs 😂. I would also assume you wouldn't be able to buy PPVs on replay if a deal was looming.
