Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Kyle Rittenhouse at the top. Kyle's apparently doing quite well these days.

David Koresh and Jim Jones 2d row

Hitler and Manson on the bottom

Dunno, Britain and Boris could also compete pretty heavily in this category and let's not even talk about Russia bombing the shít out of their neighbour as the world heads into climate disaster. It's a sad state of affairs when you look at our own politicians, who are rightly treated with derision and yet still seem vastly preferable to the options available in very many other countries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,564 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Sure but you could hardly accuse Boris of being religiously motivated...

People say politicians here are boring. Boring politics is good politics. It's when it stops being boring that something bad happens.

Guessing Hitchens was referring to wasters, idiots and ne'er do wells of all creeds (and none 😀 ) at the time. Fundamental right wing Christians do deserve a special place in these kind of arguments to be fair.

    Seems reasonable 😀

    cf, Golgafrincham:

"Golgafrincham was a planet, once home to the Great Circling Poets of Arium. The descendants of these poets made up tales of impending doom about the planet. The tales varied; some said it was going to crash into the sun, or the moon was going to crash into the planet. Others said the planet was to be invaded by twelve-foot piranha bees and still others said it was in danger of being eaten by an enormous mutant star-goat.

These tales of impending doom allowed the Golgafrinchans to rid themselves of an entire useless third of their population. The story was that they would build three Ark ships. Into the A ship would go all the leaders, scientists and other high achievers. The C ship would contain all the people who made things and did things, and the B Ark would hold everyone else, such as hairdressers and telephone sanitisers. They sent the B ship off first, but of course, the other two-thirds of the population stayed on the planet and lived full, rich and happy lives until they were all wiped out by a virulent disease contracted from a dirty telephone."

Douglas Adams tells us that Ship B seeded humanity on Earth.

First guy: I'm writing a poem at the moment and I'm stuck looking for one word for two weeks.

    Second guy: "Fortnight"?

Guy goes into a bar and asks for a double entendre so the barman gives him one.

Excellent satire - on a more serious note here is the first part of the infamous LoB debate between John Cleese, Michael Palin, infamous sanctimonious w*nker Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark (the latter two later admitted to having missed, through their sloth, the Brian-is-not-Christ intro although you'd still have to be pretty bloody thick not to have got that message) :

We all know that in Ireland it was banned (but the soundtrack LP was popular!), but certain councils in the UK banned it too even though it had a BBFC rating, which was supposed to stop that sort of sanctimonious wánkery. Probably the same councils who banned the Pistols in 1977 on the grounds of.. eh... no legal power at all.

I'm calling Poe's Law on this one - was this satire, or was it an honest attempt by the church to get people to behave? Anybody know?

How To Behave In Church in Ireland 1967

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,564 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

It's from the very long running series Radharc - the first independently made programmes shown on RTE.

The film is testament to the capacity of the Radharc team (comprised at that time exclusively of priests) to poke gentle fun at the church and at church-goers.

Radharc was an independent production company established by Father Joe Dunn, Father Desmond Forristal and other like-minded priests to make programmes for television and non-theatrical exhibition. Between 1961 and 1996 they made over 400 films in 75 countries on social, political and religious issues.

Edit: the first guy into the church appears to be Don Cockburn, the very tall, very thin, rather chinny RTE news reader. (it's pronounced "Coburn" by the way 😉 )
