Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Smart Electricity and Gas meters

I have ESB smart meters for electricity and gas. Why do they still need to be manually read. The electricity gets read by them. They dont know where the gas is so always estimate. Then I do a reading. Why are manual meter readings necessary?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Maybe the central system is not set up yet, the installation is only one part of a huge deployment. If the central system is up up and running, taking reading etc they will still need manual reading till it’s live

Also if live they could be doing manual for a period to make sure the system is reading correctly

Electric Ireland have a Details section on the website which shows the "Smart meter comms level". Other providers should have something similar. This will show you if the meter is having problems phoning home. Level 1 is worst (manual read required) while Level 4 is best.

AFAIK there are no 'smart' gas meters yet. They're nearly all digital now, yes, but there's no communication module in them so need to be read manually. I'm with Energia, and get an email every 2 months to submit a reading online, so no estimated bills.

As Glaceon pointed out, it is possible that if you're in a dead spot for mobile network coverage the meter is unable to upload the readings so again a manual reading would be necessary, and depending on your supplier etc. you should be able to upload meter readings yourself.

I couldn't find this on the EI website, any chance that someone could post a link, please?

The Mother in law (aged 90) had a smart meter installed at the start of August. She lives in Artane, Dublin where there's excellent mobile signal coverage.

One of the main benefits for her in getting the meter - she was informed - was that it would stop her getting estimated bills (she is unable to read the meter) Now she has just received her first bill which states in large red print that it is an estimated one and asks her to provide a meter reading!!!

Can anyone advise what's going on here, please? Because for her the automatic meter reading was the sole reason that she agreed to have it installed in the first place!

When you log into the online account, go to the Details section near the top and it should be under Meters.
