Only rte have him on speed dial

Noel Kelly used to have D'arcy listed on his site- he's now been bumped. Wonder if he's now considered so 'toxic' to the brand he was bumped off the site?

So then next year we’ll be subjected to a ton of planted articles in various media telling us how lucky we were to have Dee, and we’ll never see her like again……..

I wonder what semi-state executive board will snap her up when she becomes a free agent..? ….. on €170k per year of course…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Well Joe Duffy can't even speak English correctly and has been employed by the state broadcaster for decades. "dis" dat" "dem" doze" "do be" "does be"....need I go on? And that's before we get to his shall we say unique pronunciations of place names and other words.

She be over at An Post and David McRedmond will be at RTÉ just wait and see. At least its between David McRedmond (he was with TV3 when they had to be bail out for €83m and when the sold the channel to VM for €80m having bought it for €265m!, he was also the spokesperson for eircom when they went public, that was fun!) or the current strategic director, Rory Covney of the Covneys

Actually some of the unhappiest people (professionally) I have ever met are RTE staffers. TV critic Liam Fay has said in the past that no one is harsher in their criticism and hatred for RTE and their programmes than RTE lifers.

That said, it is a golden prison an very few break ranks to publicly criticise RTE, unless they have run out of road there.

The alternative is working with Virgin Media, Bauer, Wireless Group etc. at money barely better than the hourly rate at Supermacs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭Expunge

In fairness to McRedmond, he has had rural post offices on his watch closed and the price of a stamp raised numerous times. Very, very difficult things to get done politically. I think he may have closed a sorting office in Cork, despite fierce opposition.

That's exactly the type of CEO RTE needs now or may be 15 years ago.

What did Ms. Forbes do? Bang on about the funding model and presided over staff numbers going back up over 1800. This is despite selling valuable land to pay for an Voluntary Exit scheme. She has been nothing less than a disaster.

Well they should ask for change in their working practices. Do you know why RTÉ takes a month off in August?

I don't think they're interested in that. Just protection of what they have now.

As for August, I suppose it's based on this old view that everyone's outside having a great time without the tele. Audiences would be lower and there'd be little point in commissioning expensive programming that fewer viewers are available to watch. Stick on Reeling in the Years, a couple of movies and some cheap-ass music show with Danny whatz his name instead!

(I couldn't tell you if any of that is accurate, by the way)

That month off in August is staggering, by the way. Even the lowliest paid people are "working from home" that month, I'd imagine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

He also got plush new offices and didn't want to be seen round the GPO, not sure if they are begging the government to take over the GPO as a national site of some kind. He spend huge amount getting a new logo and decking out their Post Offices around the country.

But he as the WOKE on his site, his policy on Gender pay equality is masterful, in a business were 75% of the staff are male.

I suppose over the last 7 years his collection rates for the licence fee should not be questioned. at all ever.

It's not anti-woke at all I am point out his short comings and I am pointing that he has jumped successfully on to the bandwagon, read the report into gender equal pay in An Post and perhaps you come away with something else. He will be the next DG IMO.

But don't let my divergence ask the question, how is it that An Post can't seem to Collect The Licence fee, they only collected 900,000 last year. He sit over that and has never been asked.

Lord Bruton trying to keep his dentures in place paying tribute to the Queen!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

Decided to give RTE's new 'comedy' show a chance... No Worries If Not. All the TV coverage of the Queen's death became overbearing.

It was so frustrating. Didn't know who it was aimed at. Sketches set in 1998, others making jokes about 'You're A Star', and 'Britain's Got Talent' (who still watches those? And You're a Star is ancient TV).

There were moments where I thought 'oh, it might get good here'... and it didn't. Such a shame. I've seen Sean Burke in his twitter videos, and he can raise a smile. But I was stone faced the whole time.

You could see a joke buried under the premise of their gags. But never arrived.

The BBC gives would-be TV comedy writers radio shows. No hiding place there and cheap to produce so a failure isn't the end of the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

Yeah, I know. But it's frustrating when you can see the 'bones' of a great show underneath everything. And there were moments I thought it could genuinely have been hilarious. Just needed more honing.

Nothing wrong with it but the way RTÉ presented it as we're bring comedy back to RTÉ2... oh yeah because you failed to give "would-be TV comedy writers" any form of opportunity across TV or Radio.

On that Ladhood is a good comedy TV series that came from BBC Radio.

They cancelled the Ultimate Hell Week 'contestants' interview because of the Queen, but the public HAD to be made aware of Amy's exploits...

Maybe cos they share an agent?

And really, failing to utilize the supposed prime-time TV slot to promote RTE's own programming? Pathetic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Also did they send their whole newsroom across the water... they'd want to be careful BBC might see their stars and offer them all jobs!

At the start of a radio programme the presenters introduced themselves.

One was in Edinburgh, other was in London and third back in Dublin.

No need for all that, plus do rte not have a permanent London correspondent? Could they not have done the London part of things?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Yeah happened to be in the car when I heard that also.

So this is what I think happens in RTÉ. There correspondents all do overtime but because RTÉ don't pay overtime they take TOIL. I'd question management as to why they have so much overtime which causes so much TOIL.

I will be interesting to see how RTÉ defend sending this amount to cover the Death of the head of another nation. Why couldn't she have died in August!

The standard of writing, use of spell check etc has gone to the dogs on rte.ie recently. Every second article has spelling mistakes, poor wording or just simple mistakes. Its mind boggling stuff. First paragraph here contains a prime example.

But the UK is not just another nation.

There is so much shared history and so many ties between us for good or bad.

I think it is right to cover the death and associated ceremonies as an exceptional event.

  • Registered Users Posts: 322 ✭✭pjcb

interesting promotional article talking about the RTE player, interesting that they added autoplay to keep people watching longer etc...

The data Analytics platform which enabled RTE to transform its online video player: https://pressgazette.co.uk/rte-partnership-piano-analytics-online-player-engagement-49/ - via:@pressgazette

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,318 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Yes true but that shared history can be seen by the vast majority on the BBC, ITV and C4. And RTÉ have a relationship with the BBC and could piggy back on their coverage, while continuing to have full editorial control. RTÉ don't have the money or funds to send staff to the 4 corners or our nearest neigbour. They have staff in Belfast and they have a correspondent in London.

You can be sure that the Beeb won't be sending staff over on the death of Higgins if he's still in office. You might be luck to get Newsline and UTV Live down to Dublin. Shared history doesn't just swing one way.

But then a few days before that they allowed Tubs head of to London to interview 2 Hollywood stars, and he seem to walk around London for most of the morning, able to get a few pics of Toys for the Toy Show. I wonder why this was necessary?

Yes it is ...but I think the point the OP was making is that there seemed to be an overkill of RTE staffers in the UK for this event.

Do they not have correspondents in Washington and London ?

Also in the mornings they have in an hours radio

1 for the news....1 for the papers....2/3 anchors....1 for the business.....1 for the traffic...1 for the sport !

Are all these really necessary ???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,608 ✭✭✭✭elperello

They could see it on UK channels and I'm sure many are happy to use that facility.

If RTE didn't cover it they would probably be criticised for that.

As I said for my part I'd prefer that RTE provide their own take on the events after all it is 70 years since the last time so it really is an exceptional event.

Regarding RT I found it amusing that some of the posters who sneer at the LLS for not having access to big show biz stars were out whinging about the expense when they actually did get two real stars for the price of one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,608 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I think my reply above covers the funeral etc. issue.

As for Morning Ireland, it is two hours and I think the line up does justice to the flagship morning news show.

The more I think about this, the more it stinks.

This SOLAS sponsorship is a less covert way of the govt tacitly supporting RTE/NKM, which they've been doing for years.

Examples - All the National Concert Hall (state agency) ads - PIAB (state agency) ads - The Chester Beatty (state agency) ads. I don't recall hearing those ads on any other radio stations

Do Bauer stations have shows sponsored by state agencies?

What's next - The Ray D'Arcy show sponsored by The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, Brendan O'Connor sponsored by Ordnance Survey Ireland?

The govt weren't long getting a payback for the SOLAS stroke though as Colm Brophy (FG) was allowed to shout down/talk over Marie Sherlock (L) unhindered by Claire -I'm just here for the fees- Byrne

MI needs more editors though. They only have two and a series editor. How any 2 hr radio show can survive with just 3 editors is beyond me.
