Plays for England underage and has not shown interest in playing for us though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Not so far. But he does have a strong link to us though. A few average loan spells might take him off their radar hopefully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Mightn't even have his Irish citizenship sorted given he's third generation. Wouldn't be an issue now but if he doesn't sort out before his 21st birthday and plays a competitive fixture even at U21s he'll be ineligible to switch down the line.

I think he'll switch in time given the numbers England have at underage level unless he delivers at senior club level. He's behind Dane Scarlett for the U19s while Scarlett is a year younger and in the finals was an unused sub in a couple of games.

Looks like it's a done deal.

Good move for him, he's completely unsuited to the style of play Bruce is looking for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

£1.5m according to the BBC. Surprised it's a transfer and not a loan signing. Was definitely the best option for him over Bristol and Burnley if they were interested. More likely to break into the Cardiff starting XI and might get his chance Saturday if O'Dowda is still out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

    Good move or bad move?

Are these lads being advised by the same agent? Kerrigan, Abankwah, Connolly, Ebolese.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Connolly and Ebosele have different agents and still say Eboseles move was for Watford to avoid paying compensation. Connolly's agent does have some links in Italy and represents some of the young Scottish lads that have moved over there in recent years.

Remember watching John Ryan playing school boy football in Limerick and the best thing he ever did was join St Kevin's. Would have chosen GAA over Soccer if he stayed in Limerick. Squad player at UCD so why not jump at the chance to train full time in a professional set up at a Serie A club for the next year or two. Worst that will happen is he'll probably return back to the LoI a better player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,332 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Wonder was he signed after being viewed by scouts based in Ireland for Italian clubs or is it off video or was he there on trial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Not sure how ITK the lad is. Think he knows people close to the younger lads. Can't see a move happening this late except possibly Stoke. If Alex Neill was scouting him at Sunderland but couldn't sign him.

Burnley have already brought in a few new lads so Knight would be adding to a bloated squad and Norwich spent good money on two Brazilian midfielders while being well stocked in midfield.

Any move up to the championship would be good for him if guaranteed football. A move to Stoke would be bad for Smallbone all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Daniel McDonnells article says he's represented by David Berber who founded DB Sports Tour so would have a ton of links around the world. Could be scouts that watched him here. Played with the 19s this summer which included Italian based Zefi, Abankwah, and others like Ferizaj and Curtis which have been scouted by Italian clubs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

As much as I would like to set him go to Burnley for linking up with Cullen, it does seem he'd have a tough time dislodging Brownhill or Cork from that midfield.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,187 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Be interesting to see if Kurzawa can get a sniff at Fulham if he joins.

Silva is pretty wed to the back 4 that got promotion, none of Mbabu, Diop or Duffy have made starts yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,763 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

According to the Athletic, Spurs not expecting any incomings or outgoings today. Bad news for Doherty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Does Doherty count towards the home grown quota for the UK. Might be why they're keeping him around as they don't have many players that meet the quota.

Burnley signing another defender on loan, Jordan Beyer who plays CB and can play RB. Probably pushes McNally, who can't make a squad, further down the pecking order while also being the defender they spent the most money on. Others are loan signings, a youth player on a free from City and a RB they spent 900k on.

Also brought Turkish international Halil Dervisoglu in on loan from Brentford which might cool any interest they had in Obafemi this window.

Dendoncker is on his way to Villa so looks like Connor Ronan will probably spend the season at Wolves as fourth choice unless they make some signings which is unlikely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Surprising that Burnley didn't try and loan McNally out. Could be a good reason as to why he hasn't settled yet too.

Feeling for Mark Travers . He really did get the **** end of the stick there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

And if roles were reversed Irish fans wouldn't give two **** if Neto was the one dropped and Travers given a chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Well no because we had a certain amount of bias toward the Irishman. That's perfectly normal. Mark done very little wrong up until now and has paid the price for spineless defending. it's bad football management and bad business management from Bournemouth.

Why would we? It is an Irish football thread. Personally I couldn't give a toss about any team or player in England other than how it affects the Irish national team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,052 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

From Bournemouth, I get it... I think there's other areas they'd have been better off focusing on, but ultimately they got a better player in for free on a one year no-risk deal. Most likely he'll be moving on a year from now for free again because they've not done enough elsewhere in the market to stay up, and Travers will be back in goals in the championship again.

Real shame for Travers though... goalkeeper is a heartbreaking position in that respect, unlike any other position you're either starting every game, or you're nothing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

I think they have used Mark in this regard before. He'd be better off looking for a move to the Championship and going somewhere assured of being first choice. I get him being dropped if he had been at fault for the goals but that's not the case. All the same I think if Dyche gets the job he has the ability to keep them up. I'm not sure he'll fancy Neto either to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,052 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Yeah, he's better off leaving Bournemouth alright - at just about every stage of his tenure as number one, they've been constantly linked with replacements. Seems he's never really had the trust of the club. He's too good for that sort of constant pressure over his shoulder. There's plenty of decent Championship clubs would be lucky to have him.

Once Neto came in, it was only a matter of time really, whether Travers messed up or not. Can be sure Neto signed to play, so him coming basically guarantees he's coming to be first choice, and to be honest he's probably the better keeper (which isn't a slight on Travers, Neto's just a seasoned pro).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,184 ✭✭✭Xander10

I think if Craig Dawson joins Wolves it will be great for Nathan Collins. He has been a legend at West Ham in a brief two seasons. Does a lot of the donkey work and would be a great combo with Nathan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,332 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Presume he’s being bought as backup rather than to start. Kilman is Collins’ partner in the first choice xi.

    Who is Mark?

Will be interesting to see what happens when Neto let's in a shed load of goals will they go back to Travers and rinse and repeat! As was already said Neto was a free hit for a year but surely you sign someone like Duffy or Kurzawa on loan in an area where they were weak.

Would take flat performances and 1-0 wins versus teams ranked above all day long.

I get what you're saying though.

A goal well taken, one or two run off their feet (Jess Ziu) by the end and a nervy finish and you could feel it in the crowd. But at the end it was joyous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Especially if neto lets in a lot of goals again a weak side. Id say Mark will get another chance. Strange club though. They signed Tavernier to strengthen their team. Ffs. Hopefully a new manager will prefer Mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,917 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Yeah it was a fluky enough win. But sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. Hope the luck continues in the play off.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,917 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Travers is just not PL level. Always has silly mistakes in him and loses confidence. Stephen Kenny seems to like talking him up.

But my suspicion is it is to try and give him confidence. Thankfully with Bazunu and Kelleher for Ireland the likelihood of Travers starting is lessened.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,332 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Sanchez, Guaita, ramsdale, de Gea, Mendy, Martinez, ward, bazunu clearly not premier league quality if making a mistake that costs your team a goal is enough to be disregarded from consideration as PL quality this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,917 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Travers consistently does it though. And has caused chaos in goal for Ireland in games. I don’t rate him. Especially considering the alternatives Ireland have. Wouldn’t be surprised if Neto permanently took the Bournemouth no1 spot from him. And Travers would be looking for a loan move etc.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,332 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

you say he consistently does it. Can you recall the instances you are basing this on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,917 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Well you only have to look at his Ireland appearances. Plus PL form with his club. Ok keepers make mistakes. But Travers is prone to awful errors.

Then you have to look how he reacts after he makes an error. He crumbles unlike say Bazunu.

Also Bazunu and Kelleher have confident body language composure. The exact opposite of Travers IMO.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,332 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Can you provide the errors that you are thinking of when you say he is consistently error prone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,287 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

I dare say outside of this season and his 3 Ireland appearances he hasn't watched Travers, so he has zero evidence to back up his "consistently" comment.

All 3 appearances? Consisting 189 minutes of chaos??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭glenjamin

He was poor against Serbia and was at fault for one, maybe two goals against Liverpool after being rained down with shot after shot against them. He played 45 of 46 games in the Championship last season keeping the most clean sheets in the division and was ranked 7th in terms of saves made. Bournemouth played Arsenal, City and Liverpool in their first 4 games. The other was against Villa where he kept a clean sheet.

I'm not sure where you're basing your opinion of being 'error prone' from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Would cut him some slack given the back three we had ahead of him that day and playing a Serbia team that looked much better under a new manager.

Pretty sure Bazunu made a couple of mistakes in the other two games that window but wouldn't be scurtinised like Travers was because it was a 1-0 loss and 1-1 draw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,052 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

ah he really was atrocious in that Serbia game… like, total lost-his-mind stuff. An exceptionally bad game-costing performance.

It’s to his major credit that he came back and put in a really strong club season after it though. I don’t think he’s actually particularly error prone in general even, he’s a very good solid Championship keeper. Maybe not Prem level though, so I understand Bournemouth upgrading (it’s just insane that they didn’t keep upgrading elsewhere - if you’re gonna bring in a higher caliber keeper, then give him a half decent defence to work with, otherwise it’s a bit pointless)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Owners don't want to spend the money like they did the last time they were in the league. They seem content with being a yo-yo club for the time being and getting that TV money plus parachute payments. Neto wasn't even their first choice target with Henderson going to Forest because they paid his wages in full, nearly double what Neto was getting, and loan fees more than likely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,917 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Well three was enough to prove Travers should be Ireland keeper only if it is a last resort IMO. He is lucky to be Ireland third keeper as it is. Does not exude confidence, does not Marshall a defence. And is prone to awful errors not a good mix.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    Some rubbish being spouted here.

Holy jaysus. Just admit you haven't seen him play and you have made an incorrect assumption.

Neto is a seasoned pro, he got signed by Barca as backup after two good seasons for Valencia. On paper he should be number one.

Travers will have his work cut out to make it back in but should get a chance in cups and with that defence Neto will have a couple of mistakes too.

Young goalkeepers make mistakes, that's why the average age of starting keepers is 25+
