Thats a very good Year 1 intake for Ulster, Mcgloughlin could well be in the full team very shortly hes been outstanding for the u20s

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,488 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Wilson and McNabney as well, both involved with U20s a year early.

Would really like to see some appearances this year from Crothers and Sheridan. McCormick is excellent but we're still waiting on seeing Stewart properly.

Wilson is u20 this season, DOB in that article is 02.

Sheridan really should be targeting blindside this season!

Crothers has the skill and brains, be concerned with his size though.

He's not foreign though, he's Irish. Born in Louth, played underage at Dundalk RFC and only moved to Australia aged 13.

Looking at his experience he's more like the hooker Moore who Munster signed last season (and is now at Ulster) that Frisch.

Does that indicate Allison and Postlethwaite are both gone? Not sure I've seen any mention of either of them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,488 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Not Postlethwaite - he's already announced as on a one year Academy and then development deal I think?

But Allison is presumably the latest in the long line of promising underage Ulster backrowers that disappear into the ether.

No McNamee? No Irvine? I think that's poor. Both of these boys look promising. If Connacht had any sense, they'd be on the phone.

I very much doubt Doak will force his way into the squad unless a massive drop off in form or injury to the 3 options currently in squad.

JGP is clearly number 1 by a instance

Murray is probably seen by most as the weak link but everyone I seen knew he was the exact player you wanted to close out the NZ match.

Casey played well in the two Māori games and has done well in the Irish games

Doak could force his way into the squad but he is still the backup to Cooney, if Cooney is fit how many of the big games will he get? Probably should aim for the next WC cycle when I expect Murray to retire

I think Doak could take the 9 shirt at Ulster next season. McFarland is the most inclined of all the provincial coaches to back a young player if he thinks he's good enough. Doak went really well in the European games he played last season, while Cooney didn't have his best season and is getting on a bit now.

It's all gone a bit quiet on our front, but couple of noteworthy updates - John Robinson of Ballynahinch RFC is the next IRFU president, and as part of trying to grow the game a bit, Aughnacloy College in Tyrone has become the centre for the Ulster Rugby's Development Squads, with training for U18s and U19s and sessions taken with local coaches etc.

Also saw Herring and Treadwell out having a quiet pint in East Belfast - hopefully Kieran was picking Rob's brain about getting and staying on the Irish squad.

Pienaar still wants to come back to Belfast, and wants to coach ( NB not necessarily linked).

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭launish116

Surely some merit in getting him involved with Doaks development!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭launish116

    Completely hypothetically!

Worcester supposedly going into administration on Monday! Potential players jumping ship! Would Ulster throw a year contract to Rory Sunderland considering they had a conversation before recently?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,488 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Can't see it - we already have three NIE players on the books for next season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭launish116

    Stranger things have happened though!

15 Facundo Cordero 14 Rory O'Loughlin 13 Ian Whitten 12 Solomone Kata 11 Olly Woodburn 10 Harvey Skinner 9 Sam Maunder 1 Alec Hepburn 2 Jack Yeandle (capt) 3 Marcus Street 4 Jack Dunne 5 Jonny Gray 6 Richard Capstick 7 Christ Tshiunza 8 Ollie Leatherbarrow

Looking forward to being at Ravenhill again this evening. The starting Ulster team is a mish-mash of brand new players and inexperienced lads so it's going to be hard to assess who might impress this season. Especially against that Chiefs team.

    19-0 half time

    3 tries up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭launish116

McDonald, Reffel, Flannery have looked good!

Moore really needs to sort the Darts!

How is Carter an international, pedestrian like!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,338 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Lots to be pleased about there given the opposition, quite a few negatives as well but that's to be expected in preseason. Good to see some of the new players look like that they might fight for a starting jersey. Great to see players back from injury and hitting the ground running - stockdale and izzy in particular. Not sure if stewart was injured (usually is tbh) but he looked very good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,488 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Agreed with above. Thought Reffell and McDonald looked impressive. Stewart and Sheridan look ready as well. Delighted to see Stockdale back.

Very pleasing was how well the scrum and maul went in the first half with an extremely pick n' mix pack.

Dan was visibly unhappy that the new lads and fringe players dominated more in the first half than the more established and experienced line-up in the second.

I don't know what Exeter wanted out of that. They were thoroughly mediocre.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,445 ✭✭✭launish116

Really hope Stewart gets a decent injury free run this season! He looked impressive. Moore needs to seriously improve his darts!

Would be very happy if Sheridan focuses on blindside! Really is a position up for grabs!

We have some depth building, props & 8 only concern.

If I was Dan I’d be focusing on Izzy & Bradshaw Ryan also. Carter was pedestrian last night!

Some serious combination dilemmas in the pack, for once a good thing.

    100%.

Reffell was busy with a good few turnovers.

McDonald can pass and can kick from either foot (no political jokes please 😂).

Flannery was very tidy with ball in hand. He's a bit like Burns in that he really comes up hard to the line with the ball. Also has a good kicking game.

All 3 could turn out to be very useful to have in the squad.

Nice looking team that, really looking forward to it - which, of course, means that disappointment will inevitably follow.

Naming McCann as captain is a great vote of confidence.

An exciting Ulster ‘A’ side has been named to take on Leinster this Friday at St Marys RFC (KO 5pm).

Following the postponement of last weekend’s fixture versus Munster, the Ulster ‘A’ team are ready to take on their Interprovincial rivals, Leinster, in Dublin tomorrow (Friday 16 September).

The line-up named includes the pairing of fly-half, Jake Flannery, and scrum-half, Michael McDonald, who pulled on the Ulster jersey for the first time in the province’s pre-season friendly win over the Exeter Chiefs at Kingspan Stadium.

Harry Sheridan, who is currently in the midst of his second year in the Ulster Rugby Academy, will take charge of the side.

He’s joined by fellow Ulster Academy new recruits: Joe Hopes, Lorcan McLaughlin, James McNabney and Rory Telfer.

The result of the fixture, including a match report, will be shared on Ulster Rugby channels.

Ulster ‘A’ team to play Leinster ‘A’, Friday 16 September at St Marys RFC, 5pm kick-off:

    (15-9):

    Shea O’Brien

    Rory Telfer

    James Girvan

    Ross Taylor

    Rob Lyttle

    Jake Flannery

    Michael McDonald

    (1-8)

    George Saunderson

    James McCormick

    Cameron Doak

    Joe Hopes

    Charlie Irvine

    Harry Sheridan (Captain)

    Lorcan McLaughlin

    James McNabney

    Replacements from:

    Zac Solomon

    Jack Boal

    Joe Mawhinney

    Paddy Browne

    Jamie Macartney

    Conor McKee

    Zach Quirke

    Henry Boyle

    Sam Cunningham

    Ethan Graham

    Adam Montgomery

Good to see Sheridan captaining. Presumably this means that it's Cooney/Doak on Saturday.
