Tesco has started charging extortionate prices for certain items if the buyer doesn't use a clubcard. Similar to what Jeff Bezos is doing with Whole foods in the States. At the time people only wore tracksuits etc, for sports, not as everyday wear. I don't remember anyone walking around with their hand seemingly stuck inside their grey tracksuit bottom either.

Would probably have been bought by either one of the other British supermarkets as an expansion - Sainsburys or Morrisons maybe- or by Walmart to merge to Asda; which I'd say was quite plausible. Walmart allegedly tried to buy Dunnes later on; and I believe may have sniffed around during the crash. They've now sold Asda so won't be back even if Dunnes was put on the block.

The owner (of Quinnsworth) wanted out of food retailing so it was absolutely going to be sold. They kept the little clothes brand on the side though - Penneys/Primark!

A few people have been caught doing just that in the modern era - with overprint barcodes stickers! (that is at least the third different case of that in the US I'm aware of)
