Anyone know gunshop gunsmith etc that deals with Lothar Walther I'm looking to get a 1 in 12 twist 204 caliber barrel for my rifle had a fluted light varmint profile built on a Remington 700 action before it was a complete tack driver with 32 grain Hornady.

I lost interest in shooting and put it away (clean and oiled) And took it out a year and a half later to discover the inside of the barrel was rusted and pitted and it wouldn't shoot 4 inches at 200 yards.

Touch base with Edi Graff at PSE Composite Stocks. He uses Lothar Walther barrels on his rifles.

failing that take a look at L.Walthers website.

Try Fabian Connelly in Lough Bo Sligo/Kinlough Leitrim

If you can do the job, do it. If you can't do the job, just teach it. If you really suck at it, just become a union executive or politician.

Thanks lads I'll try both didn't know Fabian Connolly was still making rifles to be honest.

I tried the Walther website itself they got back to me straight away but they wont send to a private individual has to be a registered gunsmith from what i could gather off them.

Im sort of stuck on the 1 in 12 twist as it was so good before I was offered 1 in 10 twists by other gunsmiths or told they dont deal with Walther anymore but i just want the 1 in 12. If it was half as accurate as it was before it rusted out ill be delighted I cant see it being more accurate anyway.

Thanks again lads for the quick replies as I say I'll try both tomorrow.

Doms Custom Rifles did a Lothar Walther 6.5 Creed barrel for me. Top notch job. Recommended.

How long ago was it that he built yours he was the one that built mine in the first place and the same did a top notch job for me too. It was genuinely the most accurate rifle I had. Now hes no interest in doing it again seemingly.

    Oh really? That's surprising.

It was a good few years ago now. I always thought rebarreling and custom builds were his bread and butter.

Hope you get sorted with one of the other lads mentioned in that case.

Ya i gave up asking him its a pity really as he did such a good job the first time. I'll try the other later today.

Just out of interest how are you getting on with the 6.5 was thinking of rebarreling my TRG at some stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭alanmc

Absolutely love it. Very easy to shoot well. Can't fault it really. Ammo is easy to get for it now. It's roughly the same price as .308.

How are finding the consistency of the factory ammo. Only a notion i had of rebarreling the TRG nothing wrong with the 308 barrel on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,140 ✭✭✭alanmc

My go to ammo for the 6.5 at the moment are:

    - 136g Sako TRG

    - 140g Hornady ELD-M

    - 147g Hornady ELD-M

Consistency in all of the above is just top drawer in my rifle.

    Don't rule out a 1/10 twist barrel.

Myself and my mate have LW 1/10 twist barrels on our 204s and they shoot great

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭RD88

👍 as I say just a notion i got wanting to rebarrel the TRG after reading about the creedmoor and how good it was sposed to be. These notions mostly turn out to be expensive in the end.😂

Zeissman does your 1 in 10 prefer the 40s over the 32s or shoot both well. My 1 in 12 shot the 32 that well that i didn't even bother trying the 40gr to be honest. When i did my part on a calm day 5 shots inside a 50 cent coin at 200 yards was no problem. I was absolutely disgusted alltogether when it went from that to 4 - 5 inches. I have nothing against the 1 in 10 twist myself its just that id like to stay with the 1 in 12 as the 1 in 10 just wont be better if you get me but at this stage if i could get a consistent inch a 200 yards with a 1 in 10 twist with either the 32s or 40s id be happy enough.

I use 40 grain but I did try the 32 grain and they shot good as well.

I rebarreled my .308 to 6.5 as well (Dom did it for me), but not too long after I got another .308. So yeah, cost me a heap 😀. Worth every penny 😀

I don't want to hear anymore I don't I really really don't 😂😂😂. I had talked meself out of it now you have me thinking strong again.😂.

Im going to give 1 more lad a try tomorrow for the 1 in 12 twist if i cant get it ill just go for the 1 in 10.

Is he not doing work on rifles now? Like yerself I've notions of rebarrelling a TRG in 6.5 but I shoot it so little it's hardly worth my while.

Dont think so no. Dont no what the story is i gave up ringing him anyway. Im the very same i use it so little it wouldn't be worth the bother. But still 😂. It would be nice. That or a TRG 22 A1 in 6.5.😍😂

Since Dominic has given up the gunsmithing side of his business to concentrate on the retail, what other genuine gunsmiths/custom rifle builders are left in the country?

Someone above mentioned Fabian Connolly but i couldn't get a contact number for him. Joe Melia is rebarreling rifles dont no if he does the full custom thing. I emailed Steve Kershaw in the UK as i l know a lad he built a 270 for he replied quickly in fairness said no problem doing the work id have to get the gun to a dealer in the north first then onto him.

I can only find a website for Fabian, http://www.fabgun.com.

There's John Murphy in Portlaoise: https://www.facebook.com/johnmurphyrifles/

Have you thought about getting JB non embedded Bore cleaning compound and scrubbing out the bore, then giving it a try before discarding the barrel?

If not and you have the details of the profile, calibre, length and type of barrel you want, I know a guy who deals with Lothar Walther who can get you one. Ive 3 myself good barrels.

    Thanks again

    RD88

How did you get sorted with your Rifle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭RD88

I fired 3 boxes of cheap bullets out of it to see would it fill in the pits and I swapped to federal bullets it's doing 3/4s of an inch at 100 now nothing compared to what it was able to do but it's good enough for foxes
