Genuine query, anyone going or have been to Kiev or any other Ukraine city lately for a break?

Great deals to be got, yes i am aware a war is on in the country. Been there before beautiful city Kiev is.

I’m sure you could go. There are large parts of Ukraine untouched by the war that’s ongoing. Depends on your appetite for risk. I’m sure Kyiv is a lovely city, but for me, going there in current circumstances would be strange- off on holiday whilst others are running for their lives. Anyways each to their own but not for me.

Lviv might be nice. Travel to Poland and across the border.

A Ukrainian couple that live beside us have had to go back a few times recently due to elderly parents who refuse to leave the country since the war started.

They've likened it to the troubles in the North here. Certain areas of the country are complete no-go zones but a lot of places are still open for business.

Just check what areas are worst affected and avoid them. Enjoy.

I met several Ukrainian people over the past few months that lived and worked in Ireland before the war that were returning to the Ukraine for their summer holidays.

Our neighbours are not from Lviv and they've lived here for about 10 years, theyre not war refugees. They had to go back to their town to try and convince elderly parents to leave.

I only mentioned Lviv as a possible destination for the OP as its so close to Poland and relatively unaffected afaik but I'm open to correction on that.

No. But his point was that the war on this island was mainly in the North and other areas were still open.

He said its similar in Ukraine now. Some parts of the country are fine, others are not safe.

How confident would you be that you could draw on a map where the safe areas will be in two weeks? The Russians are still attacking and have missiles to hit anywhere in Ukraine.

There's a do not travel warning in place from the DFA. It's highly unlikely that you will get travel insurance, certainly not an off the shelf policy.

Most of Ukraine is perfectly safe. Cheap accommodation too. I don't see why not.

Yes, it is possible .... Visit Ukraine - INFORMATION PAGE FOR FOREIGN TOURISTS ... cannot fly into it but can fly to say Bratislava or Budapest then make one's way overland ...

Although I would not advise travel to it or any other warzone. There is some warzone tourism company too for those who want that. Not for me. Not for most people.

I was never there before the war but I was in several bordering countries like Slovakia and Hungary but it is a very interesting country by all accounts.

Anyways DFA says no go, that shifts the blame on you if something happens. Personally I was looking at Romania a few months back & crossing to Odessa, something I will do some day but only when it’s safe enough to do so according to DFA. It would be like visiting the North in the depths of the bad days, but Ukraine is a very big country. You go, you may be safe, but you’d be on your own.

If it were me, I’d seek to use my journey as an opportunity to help. Find out what help’s needed where you’re going, and do some volunteering. Spend money in local businesses & tip well. If you go, the best of luck to you.
