Short burst of heavy rain followed quickly by sun.

Blustery still in Kerry, my wife's plane into Kerry airport got diverted to Shannon this evening after two attempts to land.

Very heavy rain around 12.00- 14.00 and showers thereafter, must check the manual gauge but about 14mm today. Got very mild late afternoon getting up to 19C, back now to 14.8C.

Went for walk around 6.30 and got caught in the heaviest shower ever! Tried to shelter behind a tree cos I was up on a height (Northside of cork city) and the wind was very strong and was driving the rain across the road so I ducked behind the tree - leaned up against it and felt the trunk moving….made a quick dash across the field and across the road and stood in front of a school which shielded me a bit from the wind/rain. I was drenched though! Fun!

It was so LOUD was the wind I put ear plugs in to get to sleep..

Pleasantly blustery now.. true authentic autumn weather..

27mm of rain recorded since midnight, looks like we were under a train of showers coming directly up from the south

I'd be a bit concerned that there could be some flooding in south eastern and eastern parts today. There's a lot of heavy rain already in those areas and there's a lot more moving up from the south. I have also spotted what looks to a developing circulation west of Cornwall heading north or just east of north, towards the south east or just offshore.....perhaps a small cut off low? It might not result in anything out of the ordinary though and as I type, the rainfall intensity looks to be dropping; something to keep an eye on though.

Currently, in Meath and Louth, there are a couple of potent cells that have fired up, both of which could cause spot flooding and I would not be surprised if they begin sparking soon. One is just SW of Ardee and the other just north of Ashbourne. These will have been aided by the sunny breaks in that part of the country.

Looking at the UK Met Office charts, there could be some very heavy slow moving showers tomorrow and Thursday, due to the area of low pressure being centred over or very close to Ireland, a slack air flow, some embedded troughs and plenty of energy. CAPE and LI both look quite high too.

Starting to rain here now at Dunshaughlin after 2 dry days on Sunday and Monday. Plenty of heavy rain on the way now for the afternoon. Dunsany is already sitting at 51mm of rain for September. I can see this month going well past 100mm by the time September is over which will make this the wettest month since February. Looks like we should get a break from this unsettled muck on Friday and Saturday.

Edit: An absolute deluge here now surface water building up quickly.

Peaceful....Hard heavy rain starting here. No wind so it sounds different. A gentle rhythmic drumming.. We seem to be escaping the worst these days.. then it ripens into a LOUD TATTOO

“One of the most challenging winters ahead” I keep hearing this and while it will be challenging energy wise, I bet the weather gods will be kind and we’ll get an incredibly mild winter!

  • Registered Users Posts: 563 ✭✭✭Cumhachtach

Rain was needed, rain is necessary for growth and life. But I'm a fine day person😊

I'm not fond of bruised skies of differing shades of grey and purple, which I associate with very unsettled weather. It's one extreme to another lately.

I'd have much prefered a breakdown with rain belts interspersed with dry days. These days you're never half an hour from a cloud burst.

And there is an anti climatic feeling that summer is over. I'm a summer's child, I like being outdoors for long hours in bright, dry weather.

I don't think we've ever seen a more pronounced summer/autumn change. I'd prefer something more gradual. The one redeeming feature is it's relatively mild.

But playing sport outdoors, farming etc is a pleasure in dry weather. We need the rain but it is miserable, I find, at present. Drying hurls with towels etc. Kids with hunched shoulders looking like drowned rats when they stand around, as the ball is at the other end of the pitch. At the end of the day dry and warm beats cold and wet. Otherwise we would have never built dwellings.

Great post and 100% agree. All those people complaining of drought and begging for rain should have been very careful what they wished for. The change in the space of one weekend has been startling, dramatic and very disorientating. Like stepping off a plane from a far away sunny land into Atlantic misery at its worst. Something more gradual would feel much more natural. As you say the one and only small mercy is that it's mild. But hating it! 😨

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭giveitholly

The people complaining about the drought and begging for rain are not the reason we have so much rain since last Friday. The weather had to break down at some stage and no one has control over it

Well obviously it's not caused by humans but longing for rain is a tad ironic in this country as you will certainly get what you wished for and lots more besides. And no it didn't have to break in such spectacular fashion. The summer in Kerry wasn't so fabulous that you'd expect such a radical deterioration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Well some people's livelihoods depend on getting rain so of course they are going to be looking for it after such a long dry spell. That is the joy of living in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭giveitholly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,920 ✭✭✭acequion

Perhaps but it wasn't such a long dry spell in Kerry. And there are also plenty whose livelihoods are hampered by severe bad weather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Of course there are,I am not denying that, wouldn't call the last few days severe bad weather. Anyways I think I will leave it at that,we both have made our points about the recent weather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,913 ✭✭✭Danno

Roles reversed compared to the last two to three months.

A notable chill in the air out there this evening. It feels more like 8c - I blame the damp in the air (humidity 95%) and now also firmly embedded in the soil and across every outdoor surface. It's more like early-mid October with leaves browning on some trees, accumulating in piles on the paths, summer flowers closing up and becoming ragged from the winds over the last two days.

It has been a speedy transition since last Saturday morning.

We need an Indian Summer this year. "one more tune! one more tune! one more tune!"

I don't think anyone should feel the need to sugar coat it if they feel it's very broken weather and miserable.

Yes I acknowledge we really needed rain. I acknowledge we've had countless dry months and the odds were on such a break. But it's not pleasant to do your normal daily activities in. For most people. Sometimes I like running in the rain, some love walking in a tempest etc.

Great day today in Kerry today, was out on the land for a few hours this morning , ducked in out of a couple of quick moving light showers, side swipes really where I was, warmed up early with jackets taken off and thrown up on the fence.

In the afternoon qot quite warm recording just over 20C, great cloudscapes today and bright and sunny with blue patches of sky. Clouded over early evening with rain following about 20.00.

Just had a really intense downpour in Dublin 5. It would be interesting to see if we can breach 100mm this month, it happens on average one month per year in Dublin, haven't had such a month yet this year. It would surely be unusual if September was to be the wettest month of the year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,217 ✭✭✭pauldry

The 3rd week of September might bring some dry weather and temperatures over 20c but until then enjoy the deluges though after this week there will be less rain.

Peaceful co existence ... All weather welcomed in its own ways, and adapt to each day in our volatile climate ...

Utter peace out here tonight. The rain has nurtured the garden well. All is green. Berries full and plump and plentiful..

Looks like it's going to be one of those days! Showers popping up randomly.

Current radar for Greystones - which is probably 5/10minutes old - shows nothing. Meanwhile it's bucketing in Greystones! Cureent rain rate of 24.0mm/hr.

EDIT: Just realised the radar is stalled at the moment! Last update at 0650.

Just after 8 and still silence...

As lovely an autumn morning as ever was, with that crisp, fresh chill and light. A joy to be out on the lane with the calm ocean on three sides.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,217 ✭✭✭pauldry

43mm since the rain started Friday here in Sligo but I'd say higher in the South and will be close to 100mm in total after today in some parts. Also the East is getting a lot from it.

Today and tomorrow will be wet and very showery Friday and Saturday dry before a spell of heavy rain Sunday then showery again next week but less so.

I had a 4 day break in Athens last week. 31C to 33C. Arrived back on Saturday to torrential rain and 15C. Some welcome.

God almighty the amount of rain this morning is unreal here in NCD.

It stops for a while then another downpour starts.

By the end of this week we will have some amount of rain that has fallen and we have a long way until the end of month!

Edit: Just checked stats there 50mm until 5th Sep at Dublin airport and its still raining😏

Really getting fed up of this Atlantic muck at this stage. It's been relentless for the past 6 days apart from Sunday which was nice. Fingers crossed we can get a dry day on Saturday because I need to cut the grass at this stage. The grass has grown more over the past week than at any stage between 2nd week of July to first day of September before the deluges got going on the 2nd.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,215 ✭✭✭Kutebride

No rain so far since got up this morning at 7. Overcast and humid. 18° Meath.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭Artane2002

71.5mm now up to 12pm today - already the second wettest month of the year just a week in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭esposito

Just got caught in a heavy shower while out for a walk on my lunch break. I’m like a drowned rat. The sooner Saturday comes the better.

What will the weather be like for the weekend? I am going to a Garth Brooks gig with a pitch ticket. If it's lashing rain or making heavy downpours, it won't be nice. I googled Croke Park and its located in Dublin 3 apparently and I checked the weather app for Dublin 3 and it doesn't look promising.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,339 ✭✭✭highdef

Is the concert on any particular day over the weekend? The weather on Saturday is expected to be quite different to Sunday. Going by your message, I can only assume that the concert that you are attending will be on Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,920 ✭✭✭acequion

Lashing all morning since the early morning in Tralee. As miserable a day as you could possibly imagine. Might be brightening up a bit now but I thought that at around 11AM only for it to come bucketing down again. Torture having weather like this and it is only 7th September.

  • Registered Users Posts: 477 ✭✭glitterIsland

I'm going Friday and Sunday. I have plans for Saturday so I won't be able to change my plans.

Raindrops on the windshield, there's a storm movin' in

He's headin' back from somewhere that he never should have been

    And the thunder rolls.

    And the thunder rolls.

    That's what I've heard 😉

Some big downpours about today but managed to avoid most of them, bit surreal how you can hear the wall of rain as it approaches.

Plenty of loud thunder also but hard to make out any lightning behind the rain. Nearly 60mm of rain here since Friday night, South Cavan.

Almighty downpour here in Achill now. Seems to be coming in 30 second waves.

Time to dig out my winter rain jacket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

Most of that missed us here next door on Inis Bigil so it must be very localised. But it is thudding down now here. Although I am at the far end of the island from Achill.

Aww Barrow harbour. 🙂 One of the most stunning places in the world when the sun shines. And Barrow beach is my favourite. Love a jaunt there on a rare hot day when the tide is out and a wide expanse of golden sand stretching all the way over towards Banna and Ballyheigue beyond and it feels as if all the world is yours. Thanks for reminding me of those beautiful Kerry gems on these miserable days
