Hypothetical question re car insurance

Say your car insurance runs out on 31 December. You have the new cert/disk.

The new disk says commencement date 01/01/2023. Expiry date 01/01/2024.

You put up the new disk on 29 December 2022.

Are you displaying a valid insurance disk? If a Garda saw it parked on the street on 29 December 2022 would he think it was not insured? The disk says commencement date 01/01/2023.

if he stopped you 29 December 2022, would you be covered?. i know he could check but would you be displaying valid disk?

This is a hypothetical question, I am not in this situation

It wouldn't be a valid insurance policy but it is unlikely that a garda would look at that detail and/or pursue it.

In my experience, they glance at the end date to make sure that the policy hasn't lapsed.

If the expiry date is 2024 it’s fairly obvious the disk is not valid in 2022. Unless a disk can be valid for more than a year ? I doubt that.

It wouldn't be 2024. If it commenced on Jan 1st then it would end the day before the following Jan 1st i.e. Dec 31st.

Seth’s correct. It would be 31st dec. So on 29th the year before it’s obviously not valid..

Garda can do you for non-display obviously, as the disc you're displaying is not valid.

oh i see Failure to display an insurance disk carries a fixed charge of €60 (rising to €90 after 28 days)

It has a from and to valid date on the disc, that policy shown on the disc would not be valid for that date and so you could be fined for not displaying a valid insurance disc and would have to show your insurance policy for the previous disc at the Garda station within 10 days to avoid a possible court appearance.
