New Winter Jacket

Seeing as the weather is starting to turn a bit now lower temps more rain etc I'm looking at getting another jacket.

I've had a water proof hi viz kinda style one from Mountain Warehouse for a few years now and it does the job but its a bit big and wouldn't mind an upgrade!

I've been looking on Chain reaction as I buy a lot of stuff on there but everything looks very thin and short and if I'm gonna spend over 100 euro I want something that's gonna look good and fit right even when wearing a layer or two underneath. I find the sizes are very awkward on a lot of things as I'm usually a Medium or Large at the most but Castelli for example can be skin tight plus I'm 6ft4 so that doesn't help!

    Any ideas?

the standard answer to any clothing question here - Galibier!

I have their Mistral Pro jacket - it's super warm and as waterproof as is practical for a cycling jacket. It is sized quite small - I'm a medium in most things and the medium Mistral is quite snug on me, and cut quite short at the front (I think they've changed that on the new version). But you really wouldn't be wearing it with a load of layers beneath as you'd cook yourself. Just a thermal baselayer and the jacket is enough right down to low single figure temps.

Cheers! Never bought anything from this brand but they seem to get a mention on here a lot which cant be a bad thing ha!

Mistral Pro 2 Jacket - Galibier so if I usually wore a Medium in T shirts hoodies and some jackets would a Large be best for this?

I'm 5'8" and 70kg - M fits me quite snugly but I think L would probably be too big. Proviso - I have the old version of the Mistral; they've redesigned it since but from what people say they're very helpful in terms of advice and returns so might be worth sending them your particulars and asking.

Being 6ft4 would the large be the better option? I'm around 73 kg maybe a little more.

yeah, I'd say you'd need the large as the medium might be very short on you - they have full measurements for the jacket on their site.

+1 on the Mistral Pro as well

The sizing on their website is quite accurate. The Mistrals have become more race cut as well over the years - I had a previous one in L which fitted perfectly, but had to change a new one last year for an XL which pretty much ended up having the same dimensions as the older garment. But a brilliant piece of kit.

I'll put a provisional thumbs up for their Energie Roubaix shorts as well, got a pair last week and on the basis of a shortish spin they're very comfy, albeit perhaps a little warm just yet. I can see them come into their own in a month or twos time with the Mistral and a pair of leg warmers though

How was the sizing? I'm 6'4" but 89kg. I like a snug fit on the body but the length is often a challenge...

I personally wouldn't mind it being a cm or two longer. It's quite short at the front in particular, though not really an issue when on the bike. I'm 6' even, though probably a bit longer in the trunk than average. Again, the website is your friend here as they give extensive accurate measurements of the actual garments (front zip, back, sleeves etc)

Tried it on soon as I got in few mins ago as mentioned above it could do with being a bit longer at the front especially. The base layer I was wearing can be seen underneath it but there both black so it's not to bad. The back is actually a better length and it's a snug fit but I'm sure I'll get used to it on rhe bike plus I was obviously sweaty after only getting home!

I'm 6ft4 and 80 kg so going by that maybe have a look at the XL as surely it's a bit longer and not as fitted as a L.

The quality of the jacket itself is very nice it felt good in the short amount of time I had it on and when zipped down to the first layer it doesn't flap around to much.

Im just gonna have to get used to the length and ignore the fact I can't pull it down more.

Okay so I tried it on again and I think I'm gonna return it and get an XL it's very short at the front I feel like I'm wearing something thats to small for me even though the fitting is fine.

Only after seeing this thread now. For anyone considering the Mistral Pro (as opposed to the standard Mistral) be aware that it's very very very warm. Last winter was mild and I only ended up wearing this a handful of times. I was out training more or less every Saturday and Sunday all through the winter and didn't need it. I'd also only ever wear a light summer baselayer with it. I regret buying it over the standard Mistral because I'd get far more wear from the standard and could layer up then for the cooler days.

Just an update in case anyone else is wondering about that jacket. Got an XL a week or two ago but only getting around to wearing it today for the first time. Fits lovely quality is great has a really nice premium look to it. Its a bit colder out there without getting to winter weather yet but jacket didn't feel to warm or cold was just nice! Just had a base layer on underneath so nothing bulky and very comfortable on the bike.
