Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Stitches isn't new: it's a repair shop thathas been there for years on the other side of the road and down a bit. They're moving into the old Yourells hairdressers place.

And adding a fabric and haberdashery element which the poster pointed out.

On haberdashery, Cregal Art have a range of ribbons, fabrics, material, sewing accessories etc too.

From reading the article it doesn’t sound like McCambridges will close

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭Stevolende

Probably is a shop that adds local colour to some extent in a way that another chain outlet wouldn't

I'd hate to see it just become another Supervalu/Centra or whatever.

    It's a real institution.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,274 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

It's not closing, I don't think anyone suggested it was. It has been bought out. They'll more than likely keep it the same for a while, introduce some of their own products e.g Donnybrook Fair stuff and other things from their catalogue while reducing some of the McCambridges own brand and other suppliers too. Closing it and making it a Centra or such down the line would be a horrendous decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,873 ✭✭✭Redo91

A few posters on here did to be fair but yes wouldn’t make sense to replace it with a Centra, etc. Hopefully they don’t tinker with it too much!

Reading it back it seems one poster was, as it seems they often are, a bit confused by the article. Or else they didn't read it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭Stevolende

Hadn't read the article didn't have a copy of the paper yet. Somebody said the shop was being sold and it has been there for years. you posted a link to the article a while after I commented and I don't have the ability to time travel. Does sound like this is an optimum outcome since presumably the shop being on the open market would not necessarily have lead to the staff being kept on . So yeah do hope it is going to be kept the same as it was, but presumably a lot of that is interpersonal and being under new management is going to be a large shift intentionally or not. Hate to find an attempt to keep the shop as much as is as possible being undermined by bad chemistry in new set up.

JUst hope they do keep selling the green stuff which is what I mainly buy from them these days. There are a few other places around town that sell that stuff but nothing as central. Ernies is worth the trek though. Spinach, Chard etc etc.

The café side will probably end up carrying the "Frank & Honest" brand. This is probably as close to buying the Grafton Street Bewleys as it's possible in Galway.

Holland and Barrett has reopened after a refit.

Chef JP McMahon said his electricity bill at Cava Galway has jumped from €25,000 to €75,000 for the year, and could increase still further if there are any more price rises. He admitted there would be some tough decisions to be made in the near future, as food ingredient prices are also continuing to get more expensive. ‘Butter has now gone up by 66%, lots of staples like flour have gone up massively, and I fear this will mean the end for some places,’ he warned.

yeah noticed when it closed. Then it's had a To lease sign in the window since last week.

Assumed they would need to have a new address if they didn't already have one. Since i assume there would be some commitment to the cause and it wouldn't all just end cos they lost a premises. Hope it finds somewhere soon that isn't way out of the way.

From activity in the old bookshop next door I had thought they may be expanding, so that's a surprise.

Looks like that bookshop is in the process of becoming something else anyway

They've planning permission in for a b&b or some sort of other thing there. I'm assuming they're still going to continue even though they're closing Tartare.

Selected Clothing opens tomorrow in the former Warehouse unit in Edward Square.

There's a new takeaway where Chopped in the front of Eyre Square centre was, I was told it would be opening in a couple of weeks. I had seen activity behind the temporary gallery wall thing for the last few weeks . They've now revealed the premises but it's going to be a while before they open apparently.

Also have a logo sign up on the pillar at the end. replacing the Chopped sign which had been taken down last week.

Loam is closing temporarily for the winter season due to staff shortages and increased costs. All staff being amalgamated into Éan for now until they reopen next spring.

What a shame. Presumably if they aren't operating, they won't be able to maintain the Michelin Star. Galway will lose a couple if that is the case.

Its not the city but Graze in Kinvara closed down yesterday and Ajla in Clarenbridge are closed down due to staffing issues. Won't be much left in South Galway once you go past Oranmore.

Galway City Council has given the green light for a vacant store in the city’s west end to be converted into a new coffee shop.

Planning permission has been granted to change the use of the ground floor of a former taxi center at William Street West from retail to a coffee shop.

Stitches Haberdashery/fabric shop has opened. Was in it yesterday . Still has the repair dept in the back and the front is the sales shop. It's awaiting a larger delivery of fabric but not sure how much they will be able to have in there. Wasn't sure what to expect when seeing all notice on a shop window. So it's obviously not got as much choice as Hickeys had but it does mean something is available in the centre of town

This copied from the GSPCA Facebook page re their new Galway shop

Galway SPCA To Open NEW Galway Store On Thursday September 29th

It’s exciting times for the Galway SPCA as we are delighted to announce the first in a host of new and progressive changes undertaken by the Charity.

We’ll be opening our brand new store on Thursday, September 29th in

Unit 40A, Briarhill Business Park, Parkmore Rd, Galway.

The new store will allow us to be open to sell a broader range of items than ever before including large pieces of pre-loved furniture – who knows what treasures you will find!

This is part of an overhaul that we’re undergoing at the minute with the team of volunteers working on a number of different initiatives which we hope to launch over the coming months.

We can also confirm that we have not renewed our lease on the premises at

    St Augustine Street.

Unfortunately our needs had long outgrown the premises, particularly with the difficulties that the ongoing flooding brought about.

We would like to whole-heartedly thank everyone who supported this store over the past number of years and hope that you can join us on the next stage of our journey in our new location.

Donations can be made to the new location, including larger items of furniture that are in good condition but no longer have a purpose in your home or business

by contacting our office on 091 563631,

The tenders & wings are not described as including chips (contrast with the chicken burger). Those prices are saucy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,257 ✭✭✭✭flazio

It's a new business starting out in an environment where it costs over 10 grand per billing cycle literally just to keep the lights on. I doubt the high prices are purely out of greed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,274 ✭✭✭✭ben.schlomo

They're an established Dublin business, with 3 outlets up there. So doesn't really count as a 'new business starting out'. They'll do well to 'do well' here at those prices you'd think.

I love wishbone but yeah looks like their Dublin prices followed them, would have easily spent €25 on a meal which were wings, fries and a drink - its good buts its a treat

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,926 ✭✭✭beardybrewer

Same thing with the Dublin prices at the Elephant & Castle. At the end of the day when it's just wings and burgers, those prices are hard to swallow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,154 ✭✭✭dinneenp

Don't a lot of establishments (restaurants & pubs) charge that for a burger/chicken burger and chips? It's expensive but becoming the norm unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭Stevolende

I have heard the adage about the higher the price the more attractive a commodity is and the cheaper the more skeptical people are as to why.

But surely there has to be a cut off point for how much people are willing to pay. & is that corner in the most prestigious place anyway? Hope those prices aren't contagious for other businesses around town.

Just as long as restaurant owners don't cut staff wages to the point that they depend on tips to make ends meet. Tip culture is not welcome in Galway.

Says who? It's personal choice whether to tip or not.

I think they mean were the staff are depentant on TIPS for a living wage.

My Little Flower cafe has opened on the Main St in Oughterard, next to Apache pizza. Lovely little spot.

Scottys prices jumped as well guess with massive electric bills and inflation on ingredients the only way for them to pay the bills is to hike prices up.. I'd guess these prices are the new normal, can still get a full irish for 9.95 in the cellar with a coffee not sure how much longer that will last though..

They've been advertising that for about 4 years if memory serves me right. Always have massive closing down stickers, then it stays open.
