Favourite quote, Moira: " he’ll be gone by the end of the week, to set up wherever he wants “with his Viking-ass wife. "

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

ha yeah that joke about Serena came out of nowhere but was very funny. Not sure how that ending can be seen as a crime in Canada as didn't happen in their jurisdiction and no one would testify as witnesses I presume.
At this stage Nick's behavior must be very suspicious to most of the Gilead higher ups. I know he's in charge of the secret police but even leaders of those sorts of groups can be deposed.

I’m watching on RTÉ. June in the supermarket says ‘potato chips have changed a lot in seven years’

I’ve wondered about the time line for a while. That seems to be the first indication of how long she was in Gilead.

Very ponderous season all in all IMHO. Hasn't really advanced the story much in real terms, apart from the final act involving Fred, which was a poor return I thought for 10 hours of drama.

I don't know how much the series has left in it TBH. The early seasons were good, asjch because of the production and the imagery around the Gilead regime and the rites and procedures, but a lot of this season seemed to involve June staring angrily into the camera. I see Elizabeth Ross was credited Aith directing a lot of the episodes, so I dunno if that's a factor or if it's down the the writing, but it's a series that seems to be struggling to come up with a vision and a path to advance the story apart from the 'men are evil' /dispopian society envisioned in the early series.

There is one obvious loose end in the story around Nichole, so I guess they'll have to come back and at least tie that up, but it looks a tired concept at present

I thought the finale was a bit absurd tbh. And June's evil face close ups were comical at times.

I’d guess at one more series. With June as the main character they can’t drag out 2-3 more series with her in Canada. A final series would probably tie up loose ends to match up with The Testaments.

    4.10: Daaaaammmnn!
That build up so much tension at the half way point meeting with Waterford. I was like.. She's gonna kill him here. This scene is for her to kill him. She's gonna break the glass or something. But then nothing.

    I was like
Kinda Sircario border crossing scene level of tension... but no.. just keep holding your breath.

    But then
at the end, I was like Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh... and the exhale by June really doing the exhale of the tension. Well crafted episode there.

    Got the call back to
the latin for don't let the bastards grind you down grafitied under Waterford hanging there too.

So that was the season finale. I guess next season will be around
    Hannah, Janine and Serena.

Just watched Episode 9 on RTE

I'm generally willing to let a few plot holes slide in series but

June goes to meet Nick in what is presumably Gilead, not Canada given that the school they met in was abandoned. I get that Nick can probably move about more easily given that he is a commander but June is public enemy no.1 in Gilead and she can just drive back over the border to meet him and then back into Canada with no hassle?

Also Gilead has phone lines and June (presumably through the American government in exile) can just ring Joseph? I would work off the assumption for the scene that his phone is monitored by the powers that be in Gilead hence the suggestion that June trade children for Hannah etc, but there was no mention of phones up to now.

Alexis Bledel Exiting ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Ahead Of Season 5

“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time,” Bledel said in a statement provided to Deadline. “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”

I guess then that she'll be in season 5 but something will happen.. doesn't have to be bad.. but like.. it is the handmaid's tale.

I’m quite curious as to why Bledel has quit. She’s never really been seen as a great actor, and The Handmaid’s Tale provided her with some prestige and praise at last, and an Emmy. Maybe it’s as simple as she just thought the show is running out of steam and had grown tired of her character.

Think they need to end it with this season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,707 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Hmmm they showed bits of how it happened but don't think there is enough of a story to last more than 1 season for that

    Is that Luke?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

In the trailer? Yeah Luke is there in many parts of it.

In the coffin.. nooo I don't think so.. well I think not, I was guessing that's fred.

Both RTE and Channel 4 show it. Probably in a few weeks.

Apology accepted. Don't do it again thanks 👍🏻

That was brilliantly played by Serena using June's daughter as her pawn for her revenge.

Quite a drag the first two episodes. The show really seems to be just spinning its wheels at this point. The reviews from critics who saw the first 8 episodes indicate it doesn't get better unfortunately.

I think having "The Testaments" published actually makes things worse as assuming they plan to link up with the book, it means nothing noteworthy can really happen until Nicole comes of age, which requires a big time jump.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Thought this would be the last series, seems like they want to drag it out to the last.

Jaysus, the rage gurning close ups have reached saturation point. Will someone give Ms. Moss some pineapple to go with her ham.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭Stark

It's been like that for the last two seasons at least. Half of season 4 was close ups of June looking like she was struggling with constipation. At least her face doesn't look like a toddler covered in snot as is the case with most of Luke's scenes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

The first episode of s5 of THT was just ok ... I am not at all interested in Canada and I want to see Gilead ... when the series is set in Canada not a thing happens. This was a major fault with the latter half of s4 ... whereas before in s1 to s3 it was focused on Gilead and was much more rewarding ... let's hope subsequent episodes focus more on Gilead ... not Canada.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 277 ✭✭scrumqueen

Yeah, very poor three episodes. Could have fit all three into one. I really want to see Nick and June get together in Canada and him to leave in a big F you to Gilead but cant see that happening. I see this season being concerned with June going back to Gilead with Mayday (yawn) trying to get Hannah back (yawn) and Serena becoming some sort of Global Ambassador for Gilead - all snoozeworthy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,159 ✭✭✭✭iamwhoiam

I watched the first episode last night and so bored with the close ups of Junes face . I thought I had pressed pause at one stage

Well it looks like Serena is finding out what life as a handmaiden is like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

Episode 4 ... good episode ... things are picking up nicely now after a slowish first few episodes ... June v Serena placing both in Canada brings life to the Canadian part ... The Testaments Aunt Lydia is forming too ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,342 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

That was a funny scene with the therapist !

June's face and she addressing her psychopathic tendencies 👀😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,697 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

I enjoy it most when June isn't in it making faces into the camera, Serena is supposed to be the baddie but she is turning into my favourite character at this stage and I'm hoping she kills June off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,146 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

    I'm thinking Thelma and Louise 2022 😜

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I enjoyed that episode. Less focus on June moping around the house with June and Moira and some decent Serena/Aunt Lydia/Gilead shenanigans. Hopefully it continues in the same vein.

Wonder what will happen to Luke. June is protected by plot armor as Moss is the star of the show (at one point I expected her to break the fourth wall when giving Luke the pep talk and tell him she can't die because she's the **** star) but Luke is pretty disposable.

I thought the exact same thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭Stark

I'm somewhat hopeful the Testaments will be good. Especially if it's a fresh cast with the exception of Ann Dowd carrying over (no plot contortions needed to keep Moss centre stage). "The Handmaid's Tale" TV adaptation was amazing when it was following the book material.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,707 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

That was a good episode I thought (baby one that is)

June really has perfected the grimaced face

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,043 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Not bad. There were certain character aspects that made sense. June protective plot armour aside, I wasn't surprised that Serena didn't go through with pulling the trigger. Like other Gilead wives, she'd be complicit in the deaths of hundreds of thousands but not used to getting blood on her own hands. Quite a lot of rewriting history from Season 1 though to make it seem like June and Serana had some sort of connection and Serana wasn't a total thundercunt without exception.

Serena hasn't changed, she just knew June would be useful to her. She was dying from sepsis and complained that the hospital gave her antibiotics instead of natural remedies ffs
