But renting a basic bedsit is half my income and thats on 40,000. So realistically someone would need to have the spending power of around the average income at least in retirement to survive renting. And it also means you cannot fund a pension as you simply cant afford it

nursing homes in Ireland and the fair deal scheme that funds them as based on the person going into them owning a home and using that to fund it

Then what will happen to the hundreds of thousands of renters when they retire in 30 years? Seriously? Mass public housing for the elderly? Or will it be elder homeless hostels

How will people on the state pension afford rents that people on middle income cant? Thats what Im asking

But this has never happened before, at least not since tenement times have we had a full generation of working class people renting as only the top 20% can afford to buy now. So what is going to come of it?

Will retired people have to leave their healthcare, GP etc behind to live in undesireable rural areas without even public transport? That would literally kill an old person

Obviously the only solution to avoid mass homelessness is either the state pays the rent that the renter has been in long term or else they provide elder housing units. But giving our right wing housing market and the lack of state action for working people I really cant see that happening. Hence why Im fearful of people in massive numbers relying on charities or homelessness like they did pre 1930s before social housing

I mean yes I do deserve a house in Dublin on an average wage, and I never said I have no savings. But the top ups for Dublin would mean even a place like Finglas requires a top up deposit of at least 45000 on a salary of 40k thats to the lending rules

People who cant afford to buy should have social housing

Boy the old tech guys who hate the poor and middle earners on boards are going to get a shock when the people they hate (a majority of the younger generation, non homeowners) vote for radical governments because of the housing situation that tax them at higher rates

Id be happy with the economy tanking as the tech companies would leave and inequality would collapse, then we could have a recovery that normal working people could afford to live again like they could in the past

Of course it is. We used low tax for mmcs to locate here. They employ a small amount of local people in tech (most Irish studied arts or business) and bring in foregin experts for the other jobs. This influx of niche experts on 100k+ as well as the ending of building social housing over decades have come together to result in housing being too expensive in Dublin for working class people and a explosion of people forced to live at home or rent in the private market
