nct failure-fuel cap seal damaged

I failed my nct at the weekend based on this.

The fuel cap seal damaged.

The piece of rubber that was attached from the petrol cap is detached.

i went to the garage after the NCT.

They said they can't see what the piece of rubber was attached to?

Just above the petrol cap in the picture there looks to be a tiny bit of rubber sticking out , l'd say the piece of rubber from the petrol cap was attached to it at some stage .

Not sure how you'd fix it tho , maybe cut the piece of rubber coming from the petrol cap with a blade .

Shouldn't have been failed for that, it's a loss prevention strap - not a seal.

Just shows the skill of the tester.

I don't think that is the problem. On the underside of your fuel cap there should be a rubber ring. This is most likely missing/broken or perished.

That's the fuel cap tether i.e not a seal. OP if you were failed on the seal then remove the cap and check the seal.

Just goes to show the utter uselessness of whoever looked at it in the garage actually. Less said about your knowledge of a seal , the better.

There is your problem. The seal is perished. Either get a new seal or petrol cap from a breakers.

A scrapyard in older terms. Somewhere that damaged/worn out cars go for removal of reusable parts and metals recovery of others.

so I would probably need to get the whole petrol cap with the inside replaced then which would include that piece of rubber?

You can pick up an O ring for that in any good hardware or plumbing store.

It probably failed on emissions, ie charcoal filter pressure/vent system not operating correctly, possibly due to perished seal,can you post a screenshot of the relevant failure portion of the NCT cert?. Doubt very much if it failed due to a broken strap, some cars don't have them but you can hang the cap off the filler flap.

OP, it wouldn't inspire much confidence in the 'garage' you brought it to if they didn't spot that. I hope you didn't actually pay anything for that level of 'service'.

If you did pay, bring it back to them and get them to fix it properly.

If not and you want to do it yourself, pop into any decent motor factors and they will get you the correct seal and it's an easy swap.
